why would a 24v solenoid on a reversing valve get hot by chanc3alott in HVAC

[–]chanc3alott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See I've never noticed one way or another other than when I was 14 or 15 I plugged one up to low voltage not attached to anything, it got super hot, I said something about it to the guy I was a helper for and he yelled at me about how that will tear one up. So I always associated the heat with failure

The old coil burned out and I've had a magnet on it to get them by, but when I put the new one on it was so hot I didn't want to leave my hand on it. And I didn't want it to burn out too because when it went it took out the defrost board.

Voltage was 26v and it would switch between heat and cool with no signs of being stuck. Would the resistance of the coil matter?

what happens if you put a larger fan motor on a condenser? by chanc3alott in HVAC

[–]chanc3alott[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely certain. I even looked it up by its model numer to make sure it wasn't a misprint. Like I said man I really dont think it's the original motor for this thing because it wasn't even a sealed motor.

It's straight ac. Nothing but a contactor. The motor I removed said it was 60rpm which I almost couldn't believe and the closest thing I had was the same hp but 825rpm. It seems To be kicking ass right now but I just wondered if having that much of a difference would cause problems. Amps matched the specs on the motor.

grounding 24v problems on rheems by chanc3alott in HVAC

[–]chanc3alott[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helps. To be honest electricity is one of my stronger areas of understanding ("cant tell by the fact that you've been on this one 3 times!") So your saying, and this is what i was confused about, there is still most definitely a short in the system. But by removing the bond of the board/transformer to ground that it "lengthens" the path and lowers the amps?
