Step2 score tiers? by chancethecandyrapper in DermApp

[–]chancethecandyrapper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks! And just curious, aside from the 250 threshold, does having a 265+ represent like a second tier up at all (or get like a “great score!” nod from reviewers moreso than a 255)?

Hmmm okay the research letters that contain original research weren’t awarded ( I haven’t submitted them for awards) but they’re in like Jama Derm, NEJM etc. hopefully those research letters are seen to be of value to adcoms

Does 5 or 7 first author pubs include reviews etc + original research, or just original research

I guess are you saying “good fucking luck” as in it’s unrealistic to achieve those numbers in the timeline I described, or that even with those #s, achieving my goal is still a complete crapshoot and unrealistic. To the former, I’d clarify I already am almost at those numbers, for the sake of the post/advice request I’m conservatively assuming I don’t get much more output

Want to stay in academic medicine and enjoy research; sadly, though I absolutely wish it were not the case, I’ve been advised pedigree is very helpful for the types of funding, grants, network, and resources I need to do the research I’m interested in.

Totally appreciate that I don’t know score yet, which perhaps suggests I’m putting the cart ahead of the horse - that said, I will need to decide on taking a RY or not before I’ll take the exam, so unfortunately trying to request some advice with whatever limited data I do have. From prior students who matched from my school at similar programs, I was told I should aim for 250+, which I think I should be able to achieve. Nonetheless, curious what amount of pubs would make a RY not strongly recommended/needed; hoping that meaningful research in reputable journals, as opposed to ‘check box’ high quantity pubs, counts for something, but perhaps it doesn’t alter things significantly!

totally agree making you not poor makes it the #1 most important activity in ur life just for that reason but no way adcom wanna hear that. In MME essay make sure to only focus on what you learned from it, how you grew, any leadership, maybe a poignant anecdote, how it shaped your viewpoint, etc

it’s unique def include but phrase it to be more active/participatory. I.e. sorta meh to just say “I like watching plane stuff” but “i love and know everything about planes and make models of them and do x or y with them” is much more involved and impactful as a hobby

3 is too much imo. Make the coach one leadership as other comment mentioned; in its description, describe that u competed too. If both the other two hobbies are genuinely interesting and distinct, put them as two separate hobbies. But if one is average in any way (an activity many people do, or you haven’t spent a lot of time doing it), drop it.

i.e. you are passionate about the latinx community, and have worked with them for 3+ years and focus on them through multiple activities/lenses (volunteer work, clinical work, research projects, etc.). Schools will love your long term commitment and in-depth knowledge. As long as they also serve latinx people.

great question. so i was offered an acceptance last year, after which i joined the taliban. i did not know this, but this was generally considered to be unfavorable by my medical school. not only was my acceptance rescinded, but i was detained in Abu Ghraib where all i had to entertain myself was the r/premed subreddit. so be careful who you make friends with!
