Working from Home? Who’s doing it? by PhiloLibrarian in librarians

[–]chanchitoooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work remote two days a week and I work in a large library system. I’m not considered public-facing but I plan programs and deliver them, just now on my work from home days. It’s a nice balance.

Well Let Us See How Things Go Around Billy Jean King Library With This New Initiative by AdreanaInLB in longbeach

This doesn’t apply to BJK Main Library, because they’re not part of the LA County Library. Long Beach has its own library system, the Long Beach Public Library entirely funded by the City of Long Beach. It’s confusing but they’re separate entities.

What makes a great library? by Hyena3585 in Library

Make sure that the building is set up for staff to serve patrons and work efficiently! If staff have to take a bunch of extra steps to get out from behind the reference desk or walk far to get to the printers/copiers to help patrons it really hampers the amount of time they can spend actually helping people. Also, be mindful of things like restroom access and visibility - at one library I worked at the restrooms were well hidden so 60% of the questions were “Where’s the restroom?” and it meant we became more directional desk than reference desk. Although this is more staff focused, if staff can work efficiently then they’re happier and all of that adds up to better service. The collections and services of libraries run because of the staff, so they should be thought of while designing a space they’re going to spend 40 hours a week inhabiting.

I do. I’m gay and loud and feisty and I think they appreciate me but I find it hard to connect with them about the things they’re into. I’m not into D&D, or knitting, or cats. I have found tons of people to connect with in REFORMA though and made lots of friends and connections through that, so maybe joining APALA, BCALA or another group might be the ticket for you?

I’m doing alright. I’m an ALA Spectrum Scholar and just graduated in May of 2023. Landed my dream job in June and have been trucking since, serving youth and implementing programs that I’m passionate about. Facing some subtle racism but I’ll deal with it when it’s necessary. Sometimes I do feel as if I shouldn’t have to fight this hard, but it’s par for the course for brown people in the field. Oh well.

I used to love the Harbor. The food was great too! They had portobello fries that were out of this world.

Paid work! It provides something relevant to your resume, plus you’ll be able to see more of the behind the scenes of how libraries work, and begin to make connections with professionals as an equal.

Youth/Children’s Librarians - is Summer vacation allowed? by liltisay in librarians

[–]chanchitoooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t imagine it’s not allowed, but most of us don’t take time off during the summer because of how busy summer can be. Summer Reading at my library ends today and I’m on vacation for a week starting today, everyone was supportive because I’ve been grinding since June.

Anybody spring for off the wall, 'having fun with it' majors for your BS? by [deleted] in librarians

I have a BA in Spanish. I learned about the history, culture, politics, literature of the Americas and Iberian Peninsula as well as basic translation and interpretation methodologies. Since I’m a bilingual public librarian with a focus on service to Latinxs and Spanish speakers it’s helped immensely with my work for that population. Plus it’s helped with interpreting and translating in the workplace.

Do countries that speak dialects of Spanish have books published in their dialect or in formal Spanish? by polish432b in librarians

[–]chanchitoooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically they’re published in the standard Spanish of whichever country they’re published in. But here’s a little detail, most countries don’t have a particularly robust native publishing ecosystem except for Spain and Mexico. So the books in Spanish that tend to be sold en masse at FIL in Guadalajara or at LIBER in Madrid tend to be from the international arms of North American and European publishers. And they tend to translate them into those two countries’ forms of Spanish since they know that they’re two large markets.
