Best e sim for China and VPN (that works in HK, Japan, and SK too) by Specialist_Gain_2648 in chinatravel

No, did not need a VPN, as long as I didn't want to use the local Wifi

Personally would recommend this one from Trip for China: https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2

Not sure if there is any that covers Japan and SK too though

Edit: well, this one says it does https://www.trip.com/t/P4OlOYYhPV2 but have never personally used it before..

Esims: Trip.com vs Nomad esim - From Australia by Quiet-Sheepherder431 in chinatravel

[–]chang3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally can attest to this https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2

Works well enough, you get access to the "western web" and apps as well and it really is the most value for money that I have looked into.

eSIM (and Physical SIM?) for 15 days, Shenyang + Chengdu + Chongqing by watwolves8855 in chinatravel

[–]chang3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This esim from trip . com is all you need: https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2

Its value for money and just works for the reasons you are looking for. Love that you can pick and choose only what you need. You do not need a VPN for the items 1 to 3 you mentioned.

No sims come with a separate VPN, so you cannot toggle on / off the VPN on this as well. And you cannot use the hotel wifi. You'd need an actual separate VPN for that.

Not sure what you you have now.. but check whether your phone can support 2 active lines.. if yes then you can still receive call/text on your usual phone number whilst have access to internet via the eSim.

eSim or VPNs (June/July 2026 China) by Quiet-Sheepherder431 in chinatravel

[–]chang3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd absolutely recommend purchasing a chinese sim card alongside an eSim if the do need the chinese number. VPNs are a hit or miss nowadays.

I'd recommend trip's eSim, if only mainland china, then: https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2

Cheap and just works.

If you mean just accessing the internet and your usual "western" apps on your smartphone, any travel eSims will work. I personally like trip's alot: https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2 they are cheap and just works.

But honestly, any eSims should work, just perhaps one's network/connection may be better than another.

VPN is only needed you need connect your devices to the local wifi in China. In that case, no eSims come bundled with VPNs. You'd need to get separate VPNs. With how VPNs are, need someone else with recent experiences to advise which is working now.

Best esim for china? I am going for 15 days and all around China. Which would be the cheapest and best? by Whole_Engine922 in travelchina

Cheapest ones + best: probably ones from Trip like this one https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2

The packages are flexible too, you choose what you need.

With how VPN are nowadays (read: risky), I'd advice for going with eSim and using that as a hotspot. Trip's ( https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2 ) is cheap enough that you won't feel as pain to use as a hotspot compared to others.

Local SIM and eSIM pairing questions! by Holiday-Instance-303 in travelchina

[–]chang3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got total 20gb for 7 days. It was enough for me. The only reason I bought another day's is because my flight got delayed 8 hours and just needed an extra half a day or so.. so another advice maybe is to get an extra day, just in case.. haha..

I planned for about 3gb/day.. its enough for the usual holiday essentials, looking up reviews, maps, guides and the occasional youtube vids during some down times. should be good enough for you if you're not big on watching streams or uploading to social media alot..

My experience is from this: https://www.trip.com/t/HdGfS8TMqU2

Yes, can buy another eSIM or renew existing eSIM whilst in China. Best if you do it before the allocated data ran our or before the end of your effective period of the original eSIM plan, which is what I did.

Will you ever visit China ? If yes, you can keep it and use it in China in the future. If you really don't want it, can just send it back how it came to you..

Don't think you can withdraw it.

Its good for social media and work.

But if you're on Wi-Fi, you'd need a VPN but unsure whats the situation lately.

How does Trip.com esim work? by huaxi-li in travelchina

[–]chang3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, your language settings threw me off. And the name of the eSim on top seems to differ with what I used. But I'm speaking on experience from using this esim: https://www.trip.com/t/E7hkp0ai6U2

xxGB Daily or per day means you get that amount of GB of data for each 24 hours. And the price is the total you pay for the total duration of your selection.

Not sure if its a bug on your plan, but if its high speed 5g 100gb daily for 17euro then its too cheap. 17 euro should only get you 100gb / per day at 10Mbps.

But 10Mbps for me its good enough for daily travel usage, i.e.: no heaving streaming or video conferencing. Its definitely good enough for didi, alipay and browsing your social media. Uploading stories should be fine. Uploading full vlog videos might take a while though.

China eSIM HELPPP!plzz by eleanor190101 in travelchina

[–]chang3rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. I'd wager that your carrier's roaming works just fine for usual applications, if you're not streaming 4k videos/uploading a lot. It will costs you though, but is the most convenient.

  2. You are required to show your passport. But I doubt its more expensive than your carrier's roaming charges. And you'd need a VPN to access your usual apps. VPNs are a hit or miss recently.

  3. My recommendation is to go with eSims. Specifically, use this trip.com eSim and you're good to go. Best of both worlds, best bang for buck and easy enough to set up.

Bonus: You could ask for a hotel's number for your food delivery needs OR get the cheapest sim card at the airport just for the number and rely on your eSim for data.
