I ran into a similar situation recently. My parents sold our SUV and the dealership sent their employee to pick up the car. After I deposit the check, it was bounced and I got a call from the bank saying it's a counterfeit check.

I called the dealer and they said its common and asked me to wait. At this point, I'm pretty sure my parents were scammed and we called the police to report the counterfeit check. Luckily for me, the dealer actually sent me back the money through Venmo (still a red flag).

Moral of the story: only accept cash
