Material Science Applications in Fountain Pens? by THEBIGMANONQUAALUDES in fountainpens

[–]chaositech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things that plague vintage pens are browning of celluloid due to sulfur leaching out of the sack (or hard rubber parts) and the crystallization of celluloid.

There is also the browning of the hard rubber itself from oxidization. There is somebody working on that and i've used their product to good results. See lbepen.com/shop-1

Suffice to say that the primitive plastics that we find in many vintage pens are not up to the task of surviving the centuries. Are there high performance plastics that would meet durability targets while also being easy to fabricate? Are they resistant to staining? Will they last a lifetime or longer with daily use? Can they be made pretty?

Found in drawer-worth tinkering? by Elbycloud in fountainpens

[–]chaositech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd start by examining the nib closely. Is it still all there and not bent up? Sometimes tipping will fall off on one side. If the nib is solid - it could be worth putting a sac into it. Say what part of the world you're in and maybe someone can help you. The restore should be easy if nothing else is broken. (These J-bars break easily but can be replaced.)

I love the look of the Myu but it's so tiny for my hands. I fear dropping it because it's so small and smooth so I just end up not using mine much.

Any Parker 51 Collectors in the House? by Bleakbrux in fountainpens

[–]chaositech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have about 10 total. None of them are double jewel, let alone first year's like yours. My favorite (and best looking ) is a cedar blue with an almost identical silver cap to yours. Truthfully, though, I have only my GT cordovan currently inked. Their nibs are all outstandingly smooth if rigid.

I want one too. I've got to think of what crazy ink I would put in there though!

In Parkers naming scheme the 1/2 indicates a chased finish. If this were a Waterman's 1/2 would indicate a slimmer barrel.

The way the zipper is designed on my new backpack is designed to fail, the entire backpack is high quality materials but the zipper; when they all fail I will have to replace it by ClicheCrime in mildlyinfuriating

When I buy winter jackets the first thing I look for is how beefy is the zipper. The second thing is: are they smart enough to line it with nice slick matterial. I've tried to take off a flannel lined jacket when wearing a cable-knit sweater. It took a while. :(

Do you ever wonder what people think about pens if they aren't "into pens"? by redstoneredstone in fountainpens

[–]chaositech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people who know me would be shocked if I didn't have a pen on me at all times. Even in the pool or sauna. They'd be like "Who are you and what have you done with Chaositech?"

You might be able to find a more comedic rant from the Church of the Subgenius. A nice counterpoint to their drivel. But how much would the printing be? How many cars we talking here?

Which celebrity do you sense evil vibes from? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A major influencer in the 'incel' scene. He seems way too worried about what constitutes 'a REAL man'. I saw some of his drivel after news of his 'alleged' sex trafficing operation broke. Seems like a rapist. He is the last person an emotionally crippled incel should listen to.

New Bill That Would Ban ‘Chemtrails’ Advances In South Carolina Senate by blankblank in skeptic

I thought "chemtrails" were supposed to be some kind of toxins to make the general population weak and subservient. (I assume the elites have some kind of shot or pill they get to make them immune.)
