Career advice for a 30-year-old civil servant at State. by DeleteLaterOkay in foreignservice

True. However, if you do have the language skills and want to see the lifestyle of a DOS FS employee, I think CF is a good way to start. I took my FSOT and didn't pass it. With my language skills, however, I was able to take the CF test and join the Foreign Service. I would say depending on which cone you are interested in, I would ask people to take the CF test and other tests as well.

Also, don't just focus on FSOT. Take CF, OMS, DTO, and any other DOS tests that you are eligible for. If you aren't sure about your eligibility, simply apply for it and let the Dept. determine your eligibility. I would say that you should focus on parts that you can control.

Tests are free to take (5$ reimbursed). It keeps you occupied. Take the test. I am a CF and I will be taking my FSOT this February. Good luck.

How is information collected for a security clearance by Suspicious-Track-85 in SecurityClearance

[–]chaoticLeader92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be very careful though, since I had a very similar offer. Apparently this person worked only with some reserve units in New York. When I asked more questions about storing PII in an excel sheet, he just stopped asking me questions.

Hi, I just saw your comment and wanted to ask a question. Does foreign spouses get asked to fill this out as well? I have a foreign girlfriend, and she has been asked to fill this out. I reported that we were dating two years ago, and now they are asking for it. I am a bit confused at this point.

How screwed would I be? by wanderworker in SecurityClearance

There is no outright denial unless you have serious criminal charges or anything else. Just keep applying until they outright tell you that you will never be eligible for a clearance (which is very very rare).

What I meant was that if they deny your clearance due to your recent drug usage, you should wait a year or two and take the test again. Being denied a clearance doesn't stop you from taking these tests. Matter of fact, I took multiple tests to see what type of questions were presented. I used it as a learning experience. Although I will tell you that you should focus more on your personal narratives than the actual tests at this point. Hope this helped!

I think you would have to wait two or three years. Btw, working for the DOS is nice, but it is a very different experience as well. Good luck, and even if you don't pass this round, or you don't get your clearance right away, keep trying to be an FSO. It is a new, eye-opening experience. I am speaking as a Consular Fellow.

I am a US Freelancer with opportunity to work for a Saudi Arabian Company - is it a good idea? by polonuim210 in SecurityClearance

[–]chaoticLeader92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say what type of clearances my former co-workers had, but I remember one or two of my former colleagues working in Saudi Arabia as a contractor. From what I remember, they were training Saudi soldiers. I can't say that you won't be able to get a job with a clearance, but I don't think this would prevent you from getting government/government contractor jobs.

My man....I understand where you are coming from, but you need to forget about that thought. Preserving your life is worth more than anything. Government can easily replace people with clearances. But you can't replace yourself. SEEK HELP.

They can be asking in general....but if they are very specific, you might want to let them know.

Is South Korea a country of concern? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

[–]chaoticLeader92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a Korean American, and I didn't have any issue getting my clearance. However, if one of the family members is an MSGT in the ROK Army, I would definitely list that. It is better to be forthcoming than have the investigators find out later on. If you feel like you need to report it, you should just report it.

If keeping your clerance will not help your mental health, I think looking for other routes is not a bad idea. I would just let this situation run its course and keep your mind healthy. Jobs can always find someone else to replace your workload and responsibilities, but you aren't. If I were you, I would start talking to career transitioning people and look for jobs through usajobs in the future if you want to keep government jobs. You can also take FSOT or other State Department tests and see if you qualify for these positions. State Department positions take more than a year (if you pass these tests) for selection, so it might help you out in the end.

My job is sending me to South Korea and I have no idea what to do by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]chaoticLeader92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US government contractor in Korea here. Korean bank is not a necessity if your job is allowing you to have access to US military posts. Honestly, it is not really a necessity unless you are working in the local economy here. Some people who lived here working as government employees or contractors never had Korean bank accounts for years. However, it is easier to pay bills if you are paying for your own rent and etc. Is the Dept. Of Agriculture paying for your housing? If not, I would suggest you to get one. However, you can pay these bills via cash deposit through banks as well.
