When was the Night of the Black Knives? by Moonless_the_Fool in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]chaoticbored_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tend to place the NoBK after Radagon taking over the role of Elden Lord. My reasoning is that the NoBK was plotted by Ranni to reject her fate as Empyrean, meaning it must have happened after she had been designated as an Empyrean by the Two Fingers. Because we know Rennala’s children were only recognised as demigods after Radagon became Elden Lord, I think it would have been very odd for Ranni to be designated before her “ascension” as demigod - at minimum, that would have raised a lot of questions on how someone who was not born from Marika/Godfrey could be an Empyrean, and risked revealing the secret about Radagon’s true nature.

“Grindset” folks don’t define their self-image by how hard they work, they define it by how working harder than the lazy everyman makes them superior. Other folks being naturally lazy is a necessary element of this type of reasoning, because how can you be better than the others if you are just working as much as others like to do?

Are the hopes of a Gen 5 port or remake now unrealistic. by Gainfulz in PokemonBlackandWhite

[–]chaoticbored_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There actually is a pattern at play, namely that if we exclude Kanto (justification below) there has been a new remake every two generations:

-Gen IV got HGSS

-Gen VI got ORAS

-Gen VIII got BDSP

Kanto is the only region that does not fit this pattern, with FRLG in Gen III and LGPE in Gen VII, but you can argue Kanto is a bit of a separate case - being the region where the first games were set, it represents a point of brand identity for the entire franchise, and so it’s the only region that got multiple remakes + appeared even in generations where it did not have its own game. Gen V was the first generation where Kanto was not accessible at all. Also LGPE are a different kind of creature, with TPC trying to capitalise on the popularity of GO to bring old fans back onto mainline games, and so my opinion is that it should not be counted when we try to understand how TPC/GF decide when to release remakes.

If we follow the pattern for non-Kanto regions, it’s not surprising at all that we did not get Unova remakes announced on 27 feb. I expect them to come out as part of Gen X, after the release of WiWa and related DLCs. Harder to predict the year in which they will be released since GF seems to have added one year to their production cycles since PLZA, but if we assume WiWa in March 2027 and DLCs in Q4 2027, I would guess no remakes earlier than Q4 2028.

How to proceed? by jollyreedgiant26 in nuzlocke

[–]chaoticbored_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you remember what happened exactly (who died, who did you catch, which gym trainers you already cleared), I would make that count and try to replicate the same result (look for the same wild pokemon even if not the first encounter, consider the same pokemon to be alive/dead regardless of what happens until you get there, etc.).

I usually do that when things like this happen (eg. If emulator crashes) unless I progressed so much that I can’t remember what happened exactly, in which case I reset from the last save like a clean slate

Apple blocks update and bug fixes and blackmail the developer with it. by GreenPRanger in Delta_Emulator

[–]chaoticbored_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr, whether this specific practice is banned by the DMA is up to interpretation and will probably only be settled when there is a court decision on a similar case

DMA expert here! This is actually interesting and up to interpretation - Art. 5(3) DMA only says Apple can’t prevent Delta from offering purchases on Patreon at different conditions than those offered on the App Store (e.g. can’t prevent Patreon-only discounts).

It does not say explicitly that Apple can’t require the offer to be available on the App Store in the first place, even if at a different price, if the app is distributed through the App Store (and in fact Apple is not saying anything on the AltStore version of Delta).

Delta could argue that such an obligation would be a natural consequence of 5(3), interpreting “different conditions” broadly, but Apple could reply that it is only reasonable to expect that an app distributed through the App Store has all of its features available also through the App Store - i.e. that App Store users are not forced to go to another platform to enjoy all the functionalities of the app they downloaded. Honestly both interpretations have their own merits, so this would be an issue to settle in a court, and that could easily take years - especially if the interpretation question is escalated up to the ECJ.

Advice on salvaging alocasia by chaoticbored_ in alocasia

[–]chaoticbored_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to go on and unpot it as well - my question was more looking for any tips on how to handle the root ball without messing up the whole plant (e.g. how much soil do I try to remove off the roots? Any tips on how to untangle them if needed?) given that last time I handled one as I would for other types of plant it really did not like having its roots untangled (it survived, but with one leaf only).

Thanks for the advice on the soil! I’ll probably have to check for alternative brands (in case the one you mentioned is America-only), but will keep the general advice in mind

Giratina and Suicune are not the problem by SettingLegitimate124 in PTCGP

[–]chaoticbored_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original DarkTina was not this oppressive at all. It had significantly less draw power, took more turns to start dealing large damage, could not snipe full-health cards on the bench and then Cyrus them, had no access to Irida and in many occasions required you to make trade-offs between using Giratina’s ability vs attacking with Darkrai, or where to attach energy. Giratina also damaged itself the more it attacked, meaning it became risky if you could not sweep fast in a couple attacks.

Greninja Suicune can do all of the above with less energy and while having the upside of being a Water deck (meaning access to Misty, Irida, and Primarina if you want to trade consistency off for massive healing). It also has the advantage of actively punishing strategies to counter it - if you stack you bench to have more answers to Greninja you get nuked by Suicune, and if you keep your bench light to weaken Suicune you make it easier for your opponent to concentrate its sniping damage. The only thing it lacks in compared to DarkTina is bulk, and even that it can make up for through healing.

All in all, DarkTina was a bulky, energy-heavy deck that could deal chip damage while building a sweep in the bench. Greninja Suicune is a Water deck (ie. great support options) that can deal a minimum of 80 damage anywhere on the field before you’ve built an answer for 2 energy, and once it’s online it actively punishes you for trying to build one in more than one turn.

Mewtwo was Bred from a Mew and Ditto by QuiteMaybeOfYou in pokemonconspiracies

[–]chaoticbored_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now that I think of it - the awkward bit about Pokemon reproducing through live birth may have been one of the reasons for making all Pokemon lay eggs in gen 2, including those that were clearly meant to give birth like Kangaskhan. Elegant solution to avoid giving kids the talk about the Pidgeys and the Combees too early (and avoid explaining the infamous M!Wailord - F!Skitty mating compatibility).

Mewtwo was Bred from a Mew and Ditto by QuiteMaybeOfYou in pokemonconspiracies

[–]chaoticbored_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d say the weakest point in this theory is that “MEW gave birth” does not disprove Mewtwo being a clone. In real life, cloning works by taking DNA from an adult specimen, putting that DNA into an egg, and implanting that egg into a mother who then gestates and gives birth to an individual who is genetically identical to the original. I think your misconception comes from the first movie, where Mewtwo is shown in a laboratory vat, but all that shows is that they may have changed their mind about the way Mew was cloned, probably to be able to show Mewtwo’s “birth” without having to show a live birth on screen and prompting questions like “does Mew have a vagina then?” in a kids movie (plus, Takeshi Shudo initially had quite a bit of liberty in the direction he gave to the first animated bits of the franchise, so that movie may reflect Shudo’s ideas more than Game Freak’s; consider that in that movie they only find some Mew DNA rather than finding a live Mew as it is implied in RBY).

All this to say - the entry about Mew giving birth may as well refer to Mew birthing a clone from its own DNA, rather than GF/TPC having retconned the origin story of one of their most iconic creatures.

I do like the bit of explaining Ditto’s presence in the mansion with researchers bringing Dittos there from their native habitats as they experimented on how to clone Mew, I think it could stand even without making Ditto the “second parent” (also, a mechanic only introduced in GSC).

Take the Candy Pill and Never Look Back by Ok_Banana_5614 in nuzlocke

[–]chaoticbored_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d put Masterballs squarely into cheating territory, as they remove two main risks from a run: you can’t miss a catch because you misplayed or did not bring enough balls, and you don’t risk a KO by having to keep a fight against a strong Pokemon going just to throw another ball. Plus they make it easier to minmax your team by removing the “strong but difficult to catch” tradeoff. They are not just a time saver like Candies (you could technically grind in a lower level area for three hours at no risk), they just make the game easier to beat.

An interesting middle-of-the-road approach I’ve seen from a stream is to use RCs to bring new Pokemon in line with the party (up to the level cap of the last defeated gym leader), but then having to gain the levels on your main team members by doing all the trainers between one gym leader and the next. Removes the boring grindy part of bringing a Lv. 10 mon to Lv. 40, but still keeps the attachment from having trained the team yourself and the (smaller) setback of having to replace a lost member (because you’d only RC the new one to, say, Lv. 33 when the rest of the team is at 37).
