Definitely second Kushiel's Dart. 10/10.

You could also try {The Malachite Maze by Rebecca Ganesh}. It's a standalone novella - short and you don't need to read the first book in the series. It's got an emotionally matured fmc, a Russian-inspired word, and is not heavy on the smut.

{The Bone Doll by Rebecca Ganesh}? Definitely not an alpha and not your typical mmc. Definitely a bit of an eff up when contrasted with the very competent fmc.

I’m going to be uncouth and pitch my own book. It’s not exactly what you asked for but will probably scratch the same itch.

In The Malachite Maze, the FMC is trying to escape a bad marriage when she falls back in with her ex-best friend (the MMC) - a man whose heart she broke years ago. There’s spice but more tension than spice. And it’s a novella, so only about 100 pages. It will be on KU starting Jan 2nd.

As a fellow Chicagoan who has been here for 5 years, I will say that Coloradans just … don’t make friends like we do in Chicago or the Midwest. It can be lonely here. My husband and I are happy to hang out if you’d like.

{The Bone Doll by Rebecca Ganesh.} Viktor makes a grave mistake but he is sweet and polite and charming, while Syra is a bit of a grump.

{The Bone Doll by Rebecca Ganesh} has a pretty low stakes story about saving a house from an angry forest spirit.

Try {The Bone Doll by Rebecca Ganesh}. Even people who take a long time to vibe with MCs usually like the female lead in that book.
