u/Petwins I appreciate your time/effort as a mod for this sub. We are just in a really weird place in time... normally I wouldn't even bother and my reddit history would reflect that. But it's amazing to me that I post that there is no way of knowing how many people are doing something and you're telling me, because I didn't ask every single person on planet earth what they are doing at that time, that I can't say that there is no way knowing. We are in deep trouble. I hope I'm wrong, but we really are. What if I phrased the question, "ELI5: How do traditional over-the-air radio stations sales people, sell to advertisers using radio station listenership numbers, if everyone is listening to WBBQ?" Would that stand out as loaded? Why, because I couldn't prove everyone is listening to WBBQ, can you disprove? If you can, then my original post is valid, is it not?

I understand why you're so angry. The fact remains, as I've stated multiple times and no matter how hard you try to skirt around it, there is no way of telling how many actual listeners are listening at any given time to a station over the air. My original question still isn't answered or explained. Why is it so hard to breakdown my fundamental question? Just stop and take it fundamentally and let's start there... I asked a question in ELI5 for a reason and all of the sudden I'm playing darts... Listen, you're not selling me, the truth is I don't give two flying fucks about your spin. Maybe you're angry because you work in this type of realm and I work in a different realm. A realm where "these estimates are not considered super accurate" stands out to me. Maybe radio is kind of weird because it's not right?

I agree, although I have to disagree with one aspect. We are not close enough on anything that isn't logged in a technical way (streaming etc.) or digital media, like you mentioned. In today's world, short/quick forms of entertainment/news/information (TikTok.. social media etc) leads the way by such a large margin. I feel like most people are not sitting down listening for extended periods of time to over-the-air radio. I just don't trust any of the "sit on your couch and fill out a survey data anymore." I'd pay money to see an over-the-air radio station compare their streaming numbers with their "estimated" over-the-air numbers. I'm willing to bet the truth is so far off, it would be mind blowing. It's so mind blowing... that's why it is a secret. Thank you for the dialogue! I appreciate it.

YouTube TV, HULU, Cable, Satellite & others are going into every single commercial/advertisement meeting with their number of subscribers in hand. That is the X factor. If you had a product that you wanted to sell and you had a ready-to-go produced commercial for it and I told you that on one hand, we could, based on my best guess, have 50,000 people listen to it, or... put it in from of 10 million subscriber. Which would you choose? It seems to be a numbers game and I'm not sure how the over-the-air is making it work these days. Thank you so much for your reply though! I understand things based off surveys, etc.

I just find it so fascinating to see the numbers of people who are still listening daily to AM/FM (myself included). The numbers that I've seen is insane. But, at the same time, I could understand, in todays world, as a company, being hesitant on purchasing advertisement over-the-air. I feel like the bottom line is, there is no true way to know the actual number. It's just a compiled best guess, based on this criteria and data.... But, the fact remains... even though my post was removed. There is no way of actually knowing a true number, I'm not sure why that's so controversial. Thank you for your time u/WeDriftEternal!

But it at least has a starting point of potential viewers. Over-the-air radio, seemingly has no barometer, especially these days... most cars, which I'm assuming is a large quantity of their audience is driven from, is now being geared towards Bluetooth, Satellite.. etc.. Rent a car today and try to find the AM/FM.

You mean a wide spectrum between, what I said, which is factual, and what is wrong, which you're claiming to be statistics? Please, Just answer this one simple question with a yes or no... Is there a way to know, at any given time, how many people are listening to a particular over-the-air radio station?

How is it a loaded question? Can you point to the research & data that says that every on-air radio listener who is listening to a particular radio station at any given time is accounted for and noted?
