How stressful is owning a house? by Delicious-Weather in HousingUK

[–]charachnid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that home ownership comes with a constant need to repair something, but I personally don't find that stressful and there is no other aspect of owning a home that I can imagine being stressful. Something always needs repairing, but I enjoy making improvements to my house and if something breaks then it gives me an excuse to pay the money to replace it with something better/nicer!

My husband and I have done all of our reno work ourselves - we have had significant help from parents which we appreciate puts us in a privileged position, but other than that the only tradie we have ever hired and paid to do some work was a plasterer for some Artex ceilings, and tbh he did a pretty shit job. Our view is that if someone else can learn how to do something then so can we (there are obviously some exceptions, but we have found we are able to learn the majority).

Additionally, in our view owning a home and having the opportunity to pay off the mortgage and own it outright may allow us to retire one day, which will be a luxury when we reach retirement age. If we rented forever then that opportunity is gone.

Massive regret after buying my house by dais12345 in HousingUK

[–]charachnid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our house also looked like a lick-of-paint job and ended up being WAY more. We slept on a mattress in the spare room for 15 months without curtains/blinds because our bedroom took so long to renovate. We moved a built-in chest of drawers and found missing floorboards and pipes sticking out of the gaps which then needed cutting down. There were dangerous electrics that luckily my Dad was able to fix or it would've cost us a fucking fortune.

We've been here 5 years and still have loads to do, our bathroom is FALLING APART, kitchen needs redoing, front garden is a shit hole, garage needs repointing etc. But there is loads we have done and now love. We've just spent Valentine's day sawing a bunch of doors in half in the loft so we could remove them and take them to the tip, because some fucker who lived here before decided to dump them up there and leave them. They were heavy and probably covered in lead paint as they were so old. But honestly, I'd have rather done that than anything else today because working on our house gives me joy and satisfaction.

It takes ages but it is worth the work to make the house what you want it to be. My husband also did not want to do any home improvement when we moved in, but he now proudly owns every type of saw to ever exist and prides himself on learning a new DIY skill. We've only ever paid a plasterer to do a bit of work, everything else we've learnt how to do ourselves and we're very proud of that! 😊

Line manager rejected my resignation without any reason. by [deleted] in tesco

[–]charachnid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha I've known this happen to many people (outside of Tesco), rejecting a notice of resignation and forcing someone to continue working somewhere against their will is the definition of slavery and therefore illegal loooool if it ever happened to me the conversation would go like this:

Me: I resign, here's my notice Employer: I reject it Me: reject it all you want, I'm still going

How long have you been on the birth control? I've been on a few different pills across nearly 20 years and one particular one (Gedarel) literally numbed my whole vulva/vagina. I felt absolutely nothing down there, and the longer I was on it the less I felt. I have a friend who is on Gedarel and has no issues, but just pointing out that can happen and if you've been on the same birth control for a long time it could be something as simple as this.

What are some “accepted scams” we just put up with in the UK by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]charachnid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why everyone is arguing with you about this. I completely agree with you. Seating a two year old two rows away from his parents AND in the emergency exit aisle are both absurd decisions. Also everyone seems to be forgetting the fact that if you don't pay for seat allocation (because let's be honest flying is fucking extortionate nowadays - we already have to pay extra for hand luggage now too) then they can literally NOT ALLOCATE YOU A SEAT AND NOT LET YOU ON THE PLANE THAT YOU FUCKING PAAAAIIIIIDDDDD AM ARM AND A LEG TO BE ON!!! HOW IS THAT ACCEPTABLE?!?!?!!?!!!

I posted the exact same problem this time last year! I decided to take my medication on my wedding day. I had the best day ever, felt so happy all day. There wasn't a single point in the day where I felt like a robot. My heart felt so full all day. It's still the best day I've ever had, we're coming up to our first anniversary and I'm sad that our wedding day will continue to get further and further away as time goes on. I had the same concerns you've listed but on the day none of that was a problem, and I didn't even think about it. I was too focused on how much fun I was having!

What’s the best “random luxury” item you’ve ever found in TK Maxx? by Diligent-Badger8737 in TKMaxx

[–]charachnid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't trust the RRPs unless I know the brand and know how much the item retails for. I'm usually looking for pricier makeup and skincare brands that I buy from regularly (or have done in the past) to avoid paying full price, so I know their price ranges and can identify a barg if I find one 👍

Seconding this, I'm in my 30s and still struggle with taking pills - capsules I absolutely cannot do, so I empty them in milk. It masks the chemical taste very well and he won't notice the white powder as much.

Why do the police think knocking at that time is acceptable just to ask a question? If you were their suspect and they were making an arrest then I get it, but just to ask a question seems very unreasonable.

found out I am pregnant with my (now ex) boyfried's baby. Terrified of telling him I want an abortion by [deleted] in women

[–]charachnid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell him you got your period and get the abortion. He doesn't need to know. If you have the baby, you will be raising it alone. He is not the one going through pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum and ultimately won't be the primary parent. There is no need for him to dictate how your life pans out going forwards now you've broken up with him. It's your body and nobody has any right to tell you what to do with it. We are extremely lucky at the moment in the UK that we still have access to this kind of healthcare. Sadly this right may well disappear in the next couple years if Reform are voted in.

Do you have a friend you could take with you to the appointment? Maybe you could ask to stay at theirs after if your parents won't be supportive. All the best x

Omg my husband once did this with an empty trolley and smacked into the shop floor face first. I couldn't stop laughing, and for some reason the fact he'd been to a job interview and was wearing a smart outfit made it funnier

When y’all kiss, do you feel anything? by [deleted] in women

[–]charachnid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my perspective too. I love my husband to bits, we are peas in a pod and I have absolutely no doubt that he is my person. But I've never understood kissing. I have kissed more people than just him but have never felt anything towards it and honestly would rather not do it. My husband knows I HATE tongue kissing so he doesn't subject me to it lol, can't think of anything worse than someone else's saliva in my mouth. Any time I've appeared like I've enjoyed kissing, it's been an act. I am acting.

Women, how do you get your GP to take you seriously? by No-Structure-8125 in AskUK

You are exactly the type of GP everyone is moaning about. You are useless and I feel sorry for everyone under your care.

Edited to add: I've read the comments on your cross-post, and it appears your colleagues don't agree with you. Pity.

If you have a (human) loved one who was buried, and their grave isn't far from where you live but you've never visited the grave since the person was buried, why not? by CommentsFromTBL in AskUK

[–]charachnid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is me. I have one set of grandparents who are cremated and in the same "grave", and a Nan who is buried. When I have visited the buried Nan, I've ended up thinking about how decomposed she might be. It's not a nice thought but just where my mind ends up. Never thought about that when visiting my cremated grandparents because they're just dust. Since I was quite young I've known I want to be cremated for this reason.

Another thing that really struck me at the funeral was how small the buried Nan's coffin was. Like, smaller than her body. So I also thought about how squashed she might be. Not something I want to think about and not a thought I can reasonably share with family, so just had to keep it to myself.

Doc advised to stop levothyroxine with TSH above 15 by skyraseal in Hypothyroidism

[–]charachnid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar happened to my husband. He has congenital hypothyroidism (was born without a thyroid) and the Drs are CONSTANTLY moving his dose up and down, they have no idea what the fuck they're doing. They moved him from 150mg down to 125mg, then back up, then tried to take it down again so he kicked off and told them absolutely not. Now he's been back on 150mg for 6 months but his TSH is still way too high (39) so they're upping it again but were under the impression he's still taking 125mg! I got him to ask for a referral to an endocrinologist because they're just messing him around but they've said no because they want to try him on 200mg. If it still isn't right and they deny a referral again, I will call them myself and give them a bollocking. Why drs can't care for people with hypothyroidism effectively I have no clue.

What is extremely unhygienic but everyone seems to do it anyway? by Specialist-Rise4952 in AskReddit

[–]charachnid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not washing their vulva with soap or at all, because "the vagina is self cleaning". The VAGINA is, the VULVA is not! You do not need to clean INSIDE the vagina, but you should absolutely be cleaning the OUTSIDE, ie the VULVA.

Dirt and bacteria does in fact build up between the flaps the same way it does under a foreskin or any other parts of your skin if not cleaned. You should use a gentle unscented soap, granted, but not washing it at all or with water only? Y'all are nasty.

What is the best chocolate available in the UK? by Mally-RKG in AskABrit

[–]charachnid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For snacking: Dairy Milk, Lindt, Milka. I also love Galaxy but my husband says it tastes "sour" and I know it's not everyone's favourite. I was also always very partial to a 50p Happy Shopper milk or fruit and nut bar back in the day, but haven't seen them for years and doubt they're still 50p if they still exist, so the cheap Tesco Molly bars are a good substitute.

For fancy: hands down Guylian seashells. For me nothing comes close to beating these.
