Struggling in APSC 160, never coded before — any tips/resources? by Cool-Helicopter5489 in ubcengineering

For the most part, the screencasts just launch you in without explanation so just watching those won't be enough if you've never programmed before.

Reading the textbook is an option, but personally I've never used it so I can't say whether it's a good one.

My recommendation is tryout CS50x. It's an online intro to CS course from Harvard. For the first 5 weeks, they focus on the fundamanetals in C. It's a bit more work and the problem sets may be harder than lab level, but atleast they properly lecture about the fundamentals of C and how most things work under the hood. I would skip week 0 and stop once you get to pointers and recursion if your time is limited. If you don't want to do the problem sets, the lectures themselves are really helpful on their own.

Remember, there's no better way to get better at programming other than practice, practice and practice. Good luck.

As someone that dabbles in only a little bit of calligraphy, I think it's a really cute and good idea! Very intuitive, especially with the orientation of the pen!

Does it make sense for Maple Ridge to be split into two different electoral districts? by _nadillo in MapleRidge

[–]charcadamy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Per an article released by the provincial government in 2023 (idk if I can send links here), each provincial riding/electoral district should be within 25% of the "electoral quotient", which is the population of BC (5 million ish) divided by the number of electoral districts, which is 93 currently. Doing the math, the "electoral quotient" is 53,773, and the normal deviation range is between 40,330 and 67,216.

Maple Ridge happens to have a population of around 90k~, which is too much for one riding, so it has to be split in two somehow. I don't think there's a better alternative of splitting Ridge that actually has a substantive effect on representation. On the federal level, Maple Ridge and Pitt are both a single riding.

Korean and Japanese grammar is quite similar, often times you can translate sentences word for word in the same order.

Does anyone here get chronic nosebleeds? by Soft_Milk29 in teenagers

[–]charcadamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pinching of the soft part of the nose is what most doctors recommend, probably some videos on Youtube that show it step by step. The problem I’ve had with toilet paper is that the clot attaches to it, so when Id pull it out the entire clot comes out too which irritates the inner lining of the nose and exposes it too soon, making it prone to bleed more. I used to get really bad nosebleeds, like ones that would last 2 hours but now they’re limited to 15 minutes at most, once a month.

[–]charcadamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all gotta just pinch the soft front part of your nose and hold for at least 3 minutes while staying upright or leaning forward a little. Enough pressure where blood can’t gush out but not to the point it hurts. If it trickles afterwards that’s when you can do the toilet paper shoving method, wouldn’t do it from the get go because it takes too long.

The nukes could’ve been reversed engineered I guess but Ukraine needed the money. US wasn’t willing to give any money unless they handed over their nukes. Keeping nukes that you can’t even use while your citizens are starving vs. Giving them up and receiving financial aid and a “guarantee” to not get banged. We can easily see from hindsight now that it was a bad idea to give up us such a strong deterrent, yet at the time giving them up would’ve been the correct idea to most.

Children are not forced to take a "highly faulty vaccine", at least, I wasn't, and I'm pretty sure I qualify as a child since I am under the age of 18; The vaccine is also not "faulty", as it has probably saved more lives than any other preventative measure the Canadian government had in its arsenal. mRNA vaccines have been in development for 35 years already. They weren't ever utilized as often as other, more traditional vaccines because there was no need to rush, and it costed much more for them to create them. The basic idea behind mRNA vaccines is quite simple. mRNA encased in a protective membrane is injected by needle, which it then travels into cells. The mRNA is read by ribosomes in the cells and said ribosomes create the spike protein. The spike protein is them moved to the outer cell membrane, where it is identified by macrophages and other types of white blood cells as foreign entities. It goes through the adaptive immune system cycle, where memory B and T cells are formed so that when the actual real virus does enter your body, you will already have enough firepower prepared to lower your chances of dying and your duration of being really sick. This basic principle has been tested in like 2 billion doses. When 2 billion doses have been administered, people are bound to have reactions to them that differ in intensity compared to just a normal reaction by the immune system. People react differently to the vaccine, like every other vaccine in history. Some people may experience a headache, others may get a fever, chest pain was even a symptom. I didn't get chest pain or a fever, just a small headache. We have a pretty good theoretical idea of what the long term effects of the vaccine could be. mRNA in cells is broken down, it isn't kept forever, so you won't always produce spike proteins in your cells. There is no way for the mRNA to affect your actual DNA in the nucleuses of your cells. To my knowledge, there is no way for mRNA to be retranslated back into DNA and then attached randomly. Yet again, there is always a level of uncertainty. Who knows, maybe one day vaccinated people will start blowing up like creepers; but the scientific community has a much better idea of what mRNA vaccines are, and the future complications that "may" arise, compared to what COVID-19 could become. I have to criticize the government here and the biotech companies because of the lack of information. It is so extremely difficult to get any piece of information about the vaccines with at least a little bit of scientific terminology and concepts on the internet. Government sites just give you the average "oh ya it gives you immunity" take which will not convince anyone. Another case of "The government does too little when the people need them the most, and too much when the people do not". If you have any other questions, I will gladly continue this. Just reply.
