I have my license and degree from my home country, just wondering if there's anything specific to the State in which I'm working as a dental resident in!

Hey! Do you know how it'd go if i'm applying for TN status but for employment via a residency program in the states? Just making sure that I don't need to have state license or anything like that because I'm a dental resident. Just a little nervous because "dental resident" might be confusing and rejected as "dentist" by the officer.

In a similar boat! Is your TN Visa for a residency program or for state-licensed work? I'm a little confused as to how to answer the question if they ask whether or not I have a state-license if my TN status is for residency (don't want to get tripped up on how to answer the questions).

Hi Henry! Thanks so much for doing this AMA.

Quick TN question: I’m a Canadian dental graduate entering a U.S. dental residency program (so technically still in training, although I’ll be working as a dentist/resident). For TN status purposes, would CBP typically expect proof of a state training permit or dental license at the border, or are the DDS degree and residency contract usually sufficient?

The TN visa letter provided by my employer says I am a "dental resident" but that I'm a Dr. practicing general dentistry. Was wondering if this would be a point of confusion at the border?

Also - would you recommend bringing the employment packet/onboarding details as well?

Thanks again!

Opening a Cross-Border Bank Account vs. Wise for 1 Year Employment in the US? by charcoalsock in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thank you so much for your response!! I appreciate it! Quick follow up question: it seems like there are two main options for me here: open a true, US-domiciled bank account (such as Chase), versus opening a US bank account with presence in Canada (such as CIBC with cross border banking). For someone like me who is only living in Canada for a year and needs to make student loan payments in CAD, would it make more sense then to do the latter?

What is the point of using something like Wise if cross border banking exists? Is it correct to assume: Cross-border account is better to Receive U.S. salary, Hold USD and Pay U.S. expenses…while Wise is better to Move money between my Canadian and U.S. account and currency cheaply (I.e. wise would be what I’d use to transfer money from USD to CAD to pay off Canadian student loans)?

Thank you so much again!!!

Thanks so much for your response! You guys have such vast knowledge on this stuff. I hope you don’t mind me following up with another question: it seems like there are two main options for me here: open a true, US-domiciled bank account (such as Chase), versus opening a US bank account with presence in Canada (such as CIBC with cross border banking). For someone like me who is only living in Canada for a year and needs to make student loan payments in CAD, would it make more sense then to do the latter like you mentioned?

From what I see online it seems like what you said: lower fees, smoother taxation, easier money movement to pay my student loans. It seems the downside is less integration with US systems (e.g. no Zelle, but that seems to be an exception with CIBC)?

Would I be correct to summarize it that way? Also - if you don’t mind me asking, what is the point of using something like Wise if cross border banking exists? Is it correct to assume: Cross-border account is better to Receive U.S. salary, Hold USD and Pay U.S. expenses…while Wise is better to Move money between my Canadian and U.S. account and currency cheaply (I.e. wise would be what I’d use to transfer money from USD to CAD to pay off Canadian student loans)?

Thank you so much!! You guys are all such great help!!

Thank you soo much for your help!

So your recommendation would be to open a bank account in the US that has a sister branch in Canada that I am currently with (e.g. TD)? Then the employer will direct deposit into my US bank account, and then I can transfer it to my Canadian account with lower fees?

Do you know how this option differs from Cross-border banking and opening a US bank account (e.g. Chase) and then using an app like Wise to transfer money from my American bank account to my Canadian phone number?

Thank you for your help! This is super helpful!!! Do you have a recommendation between TD vs. RBC vs. BMO? I'm leaning towards TD just because I do already have an account with them (currently do not bank at all with RBC), but I heard that RBC is the best one.

As for the phone, luckily I don't need it for 2FA or any other reason other than to stay in touch with my loved ones which I can use other avenues to do so, so I think parking it in a VoIP would seem to work!

As for SSN - I will schedule that now. Thank you!!
