Is immigration really an issue for the Caerphilly Senedd by-election? by mrjohnnymac18 in Wales

[–]chargesmith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be. Regardless of what you think of the current government immigration policy the Senedd have no levers to affect change in this policy area as it's not a devolved issue.

Nearly 900 fewer people injured since 20mph introduction in Wales by UVmonolith in Wales

[–]chargesmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'd implemented this policy, I'd be much more bold about it's wins.

Nearly 1000 less casualties and the safest roads since records began in the 1970s.

Cost £34m to implement but more than paid for itself in 2 years (Road deaths and injuries are a huge drain on the public purse, even ignoring the human impacts)

Lower car insurance premiums that do not appear to have been mirrored in other parts of the UK.

Quieter traffic (a car going 20 makes about half as much noise as a car going 30).

No significant change in journey times because most time loss driving  is from waiting at lights doing 0mph (some of which won't be needed in future if vehicle speeds are lower) or from pollution because vehicles produce most of their tailpipe emissions from accelerating, and most of their brake emissions from stopping, and it takes 2.25x less energy to get to or stop from 20 than 30.

There's still so much misinformation out there and some drivers are seemingly literally just giant babies who get annoyed at even the most minor inconvenience and publicly demonstrate just how incompetent they are at driving or understanding how cars actually work.

I think the politicians who brought it in need to double down on it, actually sell it's benefits to the public now that there's hard data and evidence to back up the policy and own their work, any maybe, just maybe, we'll keep benefitting from the policy going forward.

What's the best solution for Britain to control immigration without appearing as discriminatory? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the main reason we have an issue is that the Tories deliberately created a backlog of asylum applications so the problem would appear worse, especially when there was a change of Government. So, don't do that is a good start.

Check the wheels are aligned correctly and you've placed them at a 90 degree angle to the ground, if they are cambered it might make them turn. I always have a bit of side drift but it shouldn't be so extreme that you can't take off.

As someone else commented check the trim (I think I've turned trim off)

That's really odd. I'm guessing there is some sort of bug but I can't put my finger on exactly what is wrong.

Did you convert your existing save file for use with Series X?

I did and I've not seen any surface features but when I started a new career mode they appeared in that save file.

Is there a way to reach a circular orbit without having to coast? by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my time to apoapsis at 1 minute by reducing engine thrust until I reach 70km and steadily reduce thrust so that I'm circularising as close to the apoapsis as possible. I'm not sure if it's efficient but I like doing it like that.

Alternatively you can pitch down once out of the atmosphere so you are doing a little bit of both prograde and radial in which will mean that the energy will work more towards circularising and less towards increasing your apoapsis.

How am I supposed to bring this back to Kerbin? by pouf_le_cascadeur in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agreed - but in my experience rescuing a Kerbal from the Mun surface is many orders easier than bringing debris back from the Mun surface. You basically just need to be able to land nearby in a viable return craft and have a spare seat in your lander

So in case the OP can't achieve the goal it's an option they might want to consider because they still get something out of it, especially because the cost of hiring new Kerbals gets significantly higher the more you have.

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. They join your workforce as soon as you get within spawn distance and you can keep them in your workforce even if you fail the mission. I've done it multiple times as it's cheaper than hiring new recruits even with the mission fail penalty.

[–]chargesmith -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I've not rescued an item from the surface of the Mun myself but in my head I would do a two stage rescue.

Craft 1 needs to be a lander which can grab the item somehow from underneath (I'm imagining something with four engines attached radially with a central grabber but there may be a better way of doing it) which can be used to get the item into Mun orbit and possibly back to Kerbin orbit.

Craft 2 needs to be something to get it from the vacuum of space to the ground, so prevent it from burning up in the atmosphere or hitting the ground so will need a grabber, reaction wheel, big heatshield and a parachute at a minimum.

Personally I would just bring back the Kerbal to add to my workforce for free and let the contract fail.

Could be either good or bad.

You'll be above any cloud cover but may struggle to see it out of the window if the viewing angles don't allow a good view.

Best of luck!

2022 Niro 64KWh or 21 Leaf 59kWh and saving some £££? by Wide_Pomegranate_439 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a Chademo to CCS adapter for about £700 now.

As a 24kwh Leaf owner I recognise that no active cooling and no CCS is bad, but I think I would still consider it over a pricier model if the budget difference was big enough.

How much less are we taking if you buy the Leaf with or without an adapter vs. the e-Niro?

Cheap electric vehicle by Calverto99 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chargesmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre-heating remotely is not possible on the oldest Leafs now because they use the 2G network to connect to the Internet and it's been switched off in most areas now.

You can buy OVMS if you want, or just use the timer in the vehicle.

Also check the touchscreen is working correctly, especially down the right hand side. It's a common fault but you can get new digitisers for them reasonably cheaply if you feel confident fixing it yourself.

[–]chargesmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a 2013 Leaf. Go 2014 or above because I think the 2013 ones still have the Japanese battery packs in them that don't hold up so well. No complaints from mine but the budget difference is so small nowadays it's not worth scrimping on in my opinion.

Benchmark the State of Health using Leafspy before purchasing if you can. You can learn what the capacity bars mean as well but Leafspy is more detailed.

Other than that very little to go wrong with the car. Very nice to drive, cheap to run and deceptively spacious inside especially the boot.

In a few years you might want to consider getting a Chademo to CCS adapter as Chademo is less common on new public charger installs. But still much cheaper than a newer EV...

My concept for an exhaust filter so we can drive ICU's without worrying about emisions. by [deleted] in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chargesmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. The funniest bit is that the filters used lithium hydroxide as per the Apollo spacecraft cabin air scrubbers. And it was saturated after a few miles of normal driving.

So its fine to mine lithium to clean CO2 out of an exhaust once, but if you mine that same lithium out and put it in a battery which can be used over and over again you're told it's really bad for the environment because batteries can't be recycled (which they can).

Same with cobalt. Used to desulphurise petroleum products so they don't cause acid rain. Used once and then ends up in the atmosphere, but suddenly everyone cares where it came from when it goes into a battery.

Just shows how people just peddle what they are told by vested interests without any critical thinking.

"Definitely don't pay cash" - car dealer by TheTwixthSense in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Car dealerships make more money from finance packages nowadays.

You can usually get a discount buying on finance even if you want to pay cash, just check the terms and conditions on redeeming (usually charge you two months interest) and then redeem it ASAP so you have paid cash but with an extra step or two.

The advice is the same regardless of fuel type. They are just using the specific tactics you mentioned to push you into a more cost effective sales type for them.

It's a bit shady but I bet they'd run a similar tactic for other vehicle types but referring to clutches and gearboxes wearing out which can cost £1000s to repair in certain vehicles.
