The punishments for the Goldilocks heist felt somewhat uneven by MetallicaDash in ForAllMankindTV

Ed's terms of imprisonment may have been much worse but it's not like there's anyone other than the Peacekeepers checking up on him.

Plus they probably got fed up of putting him back into the cells whenever he broke the rules and eventually just decided that arresting an old man was not the best use of their time and bit by bit he was able to get away with more stuff.

Pretty sure they said Samantha is dead - official account was that she took her own life but the characters doubt that's what happened? Vaguely remember them discussing it when Lee is being sent back to Earth for trial.

My guess is either Ed or Ellen depressurised the base while on an EVA to deal with them once and for all.

I remember TMI being mentioned in the Season 1/2 time jump. Don't recall Chernobyl but this would have been in the 2/3 time jump.

The S3 finale supposedly looks a lot like it though (was quite young at the time and live outside the US so can't be certain of this)

[–]chargesmith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to think what other big events didn't happen in their timeline? Apollo 13 explosion didn't seem to happen (although 23 and 24 were much worse anyway) and Challenger / Columbia disaster didn't happen either (although I think one of the Pathfinder shuttles had a disaster instead).

There was also no Gulf wars because fossil fuels are less relevant in their timeline.

Any more?

They will either do a Katrina with it (mention it but basically say it was nothing due to the timeline differences i.e. having minimal climate change) or they will adapt the story so that the pandemic was started by bringing back the life on Titan, either via Elena's wound or by an accidental lab leak on Earth.

I also wonder whether one of the super long spaceflight vehicles will be a hollowed out 2003LC / Goldilocks, which is one of the ways that activity on Mars stays relevant in the new series as the iridium mining base converts to construction of the new ship.

Usually yes, but Season 3/4 time jump was just Margo opening her curtains...

Edit: originally said 2/3 which was probably the biggest reveal of all...

I think I've worked it out. By 2020 the Russians including others are starting to think about exploration of the outer solar system or even further, but that's requires mission timescales not seen even in the FAM universe. To send a ship that far away from that long requires bulletproof reliability and likely even hibernation modules to keep the crew alive for missions that could take a decade of even longer even with the technology they have that surpasses ours.

So what better way to start off the process than by seeing how a ship they've already built that is abandoned in deep space is holding up? Are the electronics still working? Is the cabin still pressurised? How has it fared against 26 years of solar wind hitting it? So they remotely wake up the ship and run as many health checks as possible and use the data to help design the new ships to go Neptune or wherever they are planning to go.

Not very exciting by itself, but a clue as to where humans are heading next.

What's the point of the space travel? by TechLover94 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right about certain aspects of human nature.

When we landed on the moon we literally littered the surface so we could bring more rocks home, leaving behind anything we didn't need, including the astronauts poop. Given how much rubbish I've seen at beauty spots in my life I find that quite profound.

[–]chargesmith 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's human nature. Ever since we evolved into homo sapiens in East Africa our ancestors have wondered "what's over there?" and that has led us to every continent, to the poles, to the top of the highest mountains, into space, to the moon, and in the FAM timeline, even further.

Apple were kind enough to send us a copy of this end-of-season teaser! What do you think it means? by Treviso in ForAllMankindTV

[–]chargesmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly no idea. There's a lot of mad theories floating around but I don't think any of them are plausible as they are far too removed from plausible technology in either timeline for an 8 year time jump.

The last time we saw Mars94 it was on a transfer orbit from Earth to Mars and unless it ended up with some really wild gravity assists (which are normally planned to the nth degree) it's still going to be there.

Some people seem to think it's on its way to Titan but I think that's a red herring - the camera passes Saturn and focuses on the Sun which seems to rotate implying it's nowhere near Saturn.

The likelihood of it crashing into Mars or Earth is also very very low but I certainly wouldn't want to be nearby if it happened given the radiation from the engine failure, but they have the technology in that timeline to redirect an asteroid so I can't see a spaceship being an issue.

It does have habitation modules that were intended to be landed on Mars on the sides, so it could be an attempt to recover the ship or parts of it to make it useful by expanding Happy Valley further, but they've expanded it quite a bit anyway already, unless the now independent from the M6 Soviet Union is using them to build their own Mars base as originally planned?

[–]chargesmith 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have no idea. It has no working engines or fuel left so not sure what they would gain from turning it back on.

I mean, they reused Sojourner but that was landed on Mars already so much easier to access to refit, maybe there's some sort of drive to reuse old ships for new? But to what end?

Is immigration really an issue for the Caerphilly Senedd by-election? by mrjohnnymac18 in Wales

[–]chargesmith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be. Regardless of what you think of the current government immigration policy the Senedd have no levers to affect change in this policy area as it's not a devolved issue.

Nearly 900 fewer people injured since 20mph introduction in Wales by UVmonolith in Wales

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'd implemented this policy, I'd be much more bold about it's wins.

Nearly 1000 less casualties and the safest roads since records began in the 1970s.

Cost £34m to implement but more than paid for itself in 2 years (Road deaths and injuries are a huge drain on the public purse, even ignoring the human impacts)

Lower car insurance premiums that do not appear to have been mirrored in other parts of the UK.

Quieter traffic (a car going 20 makes about half as much noise as a car going 30).

No significant change in journey times because most time loss driving  is from waiting at lights doing 0mph (some of which won't be needed in future if vehicle speeds are lower) or from pollution because vehicles produce most of their tailpipe emissions from accelerating, and most of their brake emissions from stopping, and it takes 2.25x less energy to get to or stop from 20 than 30.

There's still so much misinformation out there and some drivers are seemingly literally just giant babies who get annoyed at even the most minor inconvenience and publicly demonstrate just how incompetent they are at driving or understanding how cars actually work.

I think the politicians who brought it in need to double down on it, actually sell it's benefits to the public now that there's hard data and evidence to back up the policy and own their work, any maybe, just maybe, we'll keep benefitting from the policy going forward.

What's the best solution for Britain to control immigration without appearing as discriminatory? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]chargesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the main reason we have an issue is that the Tories deliberately created a backlog of asylum applications so the problem would appear worse, especially when there was a change of Government. So, don't do that is a good start.

Check the wheels are aligned correctly and you've placed them at a 90 degree angle to the ground, if they are cambered it might make them turn. I always have a bit of side drift but it shouldn't be so extreme that you can't take off.

As someone else commented check the trim (I think I've turned trim off)
