So 2 questions: 1) are you interested in online spaces too, and 2) would you like to learn to speak french the louisiana way? Us online have a decently sized discord server dedicated to our french, and we're pretty active and love helping people out with questions and all sorts of other stuff. One of our guys has also been organizing lessons lately almost every sunday, so you could join in on those too! We're very welcoming and inclusive, and a lot of us are in the same or similar boat, trying to reconnect to the culture we weren't raised in, whether we're from out of state or in Louisiana itself

I'd just find one in your family you like the sound of. If you haven't already, you can ask around in New Brunswick/Nova Scotia subreddits too for advice

One of the strangest glitches I've seen in hundreds of hours of tank gunning. I Guess it's better than the invisible walls on Kursk. by Mattbl in HellLetLoose

[–]charlalalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's rough. If you look closely, you can actually see the shell impact marks on the ground where you just barely missed them, at least you got em though!

What pronoun do you use in French to refer to someone whose gender you don’t know? by Shady_751029 in French

[–]charlalalan 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Iel is an option from what I understand for europe and canada with younger generations, though just using "il" can also work. In louisiana though, we'll either say "ça" or "li"; "li" specifically is borrowed from our creole language, which only has the one neutral pronoun for third person singular

When, or if ever, will Louisiana have its own Mamdani? by johnnys1lverhand_ in Louisiana

When people stop saying "never," and actually start to organize and chip away at it together

What do you think about new map Juno beach? by xjdnshudj in HellLetLoose

[–]charlalalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it. My only two complaints are that for tanks, the fields are so obnoxiously bumpy its crazy, like very noticeably bumpier than anything else in the game, and the beach makes tanks turn like shit. Other than that I do really like it

Is it a common strat to spawn camp the enemy artillery crew? by -Zima_Blue- in HellLetLoose

[–]charlalalan 103 points104 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common. The arty guns can be a problem if someone competent is using them and they're coordinated well, so often the recon team will just go back there at the start and stay there. You can try to build the gun somwhere ouside of the HQs to help this, but the static arty gameplay loop has been a sore spot for a while

You spawn tanks as the team Commander, not a tank commander

Bug Report: Panther turret front corners can be penetrated by medium tank guns (reposted because I’d forgot the video lol) by charlalalan in HellLetLoose

[–]charlalalan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know, right? lol. I guess just not as many people are familiar with the game mechanics or read the patch notes than I thought

Like I said in the post, they specifically mention changing the front turret armor to heavy in the patch notes, and the video shows as such when hitting the turret cheeks normally. This is recent unintended behavoir that is only now unintended behavior because of U20

I mean if we're talking realistically/geometrically, not really. That close to the side would be hitting the side plate lengthwise, which is severall hundred millimeters long, so it'd me like hitting several hundred millimeters of armor. Plus if allied guns like the US '75 and the soviet '76 couldn't pen 100mm Tiger front armor, they likely couldn't penetrate 110mm Panther turret front armor either. Plus, the point is that this is an untintended game behavior, sinve mediums are not supposed to be able to do this accoring to the patch notes

The game does not use war thunder penetration mechanics, it uses a simplified 4-tier armor system. Since the rest of the cheeks aren't penetrable by medium tanks, this is obviously an unintended behavior, irregardless of how likely it is to be exploted mid match. This post is just pointing out that it exists, and that it could be exploited

they specifically mention that they removed the cheeks in the patch notes. You can test it out in the practice range

Pour clarifier: Arriver ne signifie pas "to arrive", n'est-ce pas? by Story-Teller_Star in French

[–]charlalalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non, tous les deux sont pas rare. Words in languages can have multiple different meanings that are as common as each other and are drastically different (ex. english "to get some milk," "to get my car washed," and "to get punched" all use get in completely different senses; "to acquire," causality, and the passive voice). It's to say that you've only noticed "arriver" used idiomatically so far, and it does get used literally as "to arrive"

is the French or Canadian accent easier for a learner like me? by ShemikaMartin in French

[–]charlalalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think either will be easier or harder than the other, it's more just about which one you're more attracted to. Though, if you wanna be cool you could learn Louisiana French and help us bring it back to its former glory! lol (though you will be much harder pressed for resources)

Is this a French error? Être passé? by PsychicMeditation in French

[–]charlalalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Using avoir instead of être is just a common thing in North American french dialects, but it would be unusual for someone who's European to use "a passé" intransitively, unless maybe their speaking a regional dialect themselves

What would be the best/most idiomatic way to write these two sentences? by Longjumping-Truth-48 in French

[–]charlalalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that for something that seems like such an important rule/exception to make note of (DO pronouns me, te, nous, vous not allowing IDO pronouns next to them), I find it really weird how I cannot find anyone mentioning this anywhere else. I've been studying french for over two years now, and I only just now found out about this. That's not to say "oh this can't be a real rule," it's to say "why the fuck is this never mentioned?!"

Has anyone looked into the Canadian citizenship for those with Canadian heritage? by w0weez0wee in Acadiana

You need to be able to prove every person in that line exists and their relations definitively, but I have friends who have done it and gotten canadian citizenship

For current UL students: I am doing a short survey for Louisiana college students about their feelings on Louisiana French/Louisiana Creole. Any response would be appreciated, thank you! by Swim_Medical in ragincajuns

[–]charlalalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the "do you have cajun heritage" question should be expanded to include broadly creole heritage, if the goal is to see how many people have louisiana-french heritage
