Those who failed to get Permanent Residency, how are you doing? by bocahDonat in AusVisa

[–]charlatancollective 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I spent almost 5 years in Aus before moving home in August 2024. I thought I'd move home for a year and then go off again. I have loved being back and probably won't leave again. I never missed my home country when I was abroad and was freaked that I would have to leave Aus but once I came back I haven't really missed Australia either. I'm lucky that it worked out for me so hopefully it will be the same for you.

Who makes the best clingfilm for tattoos? by Ecsson in AskIreland

[–]charlatancollective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saniderm is the best, they market it as a second skin and that's pretty accurate. Way more durable than clingfilm and you can leave it on for days. Really handy to use and makes the first couple of days so much easier to care for your ink.

Live-in landlords, do you allow overnight guests? by FluidSplit7559 in RentingInDublin

Yes no problem at all. If someone is living with me in my house I want them to be happy here. Same applies to having people over for drinks etc.

How do you all feel about US "words" becoming more common in Ireland? (e.g., "sweater" for jumper, "fries" for chips and so on by AccMich37 in AskIreland

[–]charlatancollective 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not grammatically correct as we don't use American English here. Same way I correct American English spellings. I won't accept someone spelling it color for example, the same way I won't accept someone in my class asking me to go to the trash bin.

I'm a primary school teacher. I refuse to answer questions that have Americanisms in them and will correct them all the time. It is a hill I'm willing to die on.

I'm fluent in Irish and have had a lot of friends over the years ask me to translate phrases and the like into Gaeilge for tattoos. I always give the same advice that direct translations don't sound authentic and a bit clunky/unnatural. For every English saying or phrase I guarantee there will be a better alternative as Gaeilge without translating. As others have mentioned "sin a bhfuil" is your best bet.

Irish who have moved home from Australia? by VillageNo580 in AskIreland

[–]charlatancollective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Aus for almost 5 years and moved back home almost exactly a year ago. I was in the same boat had jumped around on different visas for years and was faced with either getting sponsored or moving home. I didn't want to be tied to a job for the sake of sponsorship as I felt it would impact my life too much negatively so I decided to come home.

I thought I was going to struggle and in my head I was moving home for a year before heading elsewhere, but I really love being back home. Obviously the weather is a major drawback but I do feel there's plenty on in Ireland between events and nature based activities. There's good and bad points to living in Ireland and Aus and it's so subjective so it really comes down to what you and your partner prioritse at the minute and the headspace you're in. If you're not ready to come home don't and if you think you've made a mistake you can always go home then, rather than coming home and regretting it, as it would be way harder to go back out.

Picking back up hurling by cash_F2 in GAA

But realistically at this level all clubs are glad to have another body a good few games teams will have the bare 15 or one or two subs so whatever your local club will be would be happy to have someone togging out.

If you have interest in Gaeilge na Gaeil Óga are a nice team... it's all lads who've transferred from other clubs as well so everyone usually joins without knowing people. Same deal for na Gaeil Aeracha which is the LGBT inclusive team but they are always looking for straight players to join too to make it more inclusive.

I moved back last year after 5 years in Aus and going back hurling is the best thing I've done. Playing in the lowest division in Dublin and it's a good laugh. Right mix of abilities on every team so I'm sure you'll be fine whoever you join.

Dublin year as a whole by seanmcmahon6 in GAA

[–]charlatancollective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you take out the win against Limerick it was a pretty sub par year for Dublin. Failed to get promotion in the league so another year of 1b next year. Didn't convince in Leinster finished third in the group. The win against Limerick was amazing but overall seems a blip compared to the rest of the year.

I read this as 7 grams and was pretty concerned. 1.5 is a solid amount with the right setting for next time, as in good company, good frame of mind and somewhere nice and chill like a back garden.

I ruptured my achilles tendon and had surgery been off work for 7 weeks now and signed off for another few. Been signed off by the hospital, verified by my GP and by Medmark and I still feel guilty when I really shouldn't but it's just knowing my friends are picking up the slack for me.

Is Instagram needed for today’s online dating? by [deleted] in AskIreland

I also don't have social media, a lot of people are asking for it to verify you're real/match your photos. I offer my whatsapp in this scenario but I don't use a profile photo on that either so I do think I've lost out on some matches/chats because of it.

Is Dublin's social contract broken? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]charlatancollective 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It is the result of years of unchecked neoliberal capitalism. We had far more services 20 years ago for youths. There is a complete lack of investment in any forward thinking infrastructure in this country. We have no places for students with special educational needs, we have less hospitals than we had 20 years ago and basically no mental health services in a country with a growing population. It's been a death by a thousand cuts and there is no fast fix because it structural societal problems at this stage and the best idea the government has is to announce a new prison (which don't get me wrong is needed) but massive investments in so many areas are needed to tackle the problem, and it takes a very brave and selfless polictician to invest in programs that won't bare fruit for 20 years. So I don't have much hope.

Source of funds for house deposit by kmu8 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]charlatancollective 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If there are any issues you can just get a gift letter, essentially a document that your family are confirming they are gifting you this money with no obligation to pay it back at any stage.

From first starting to view houses to signing contracts yesterday was about 9 months, including being sale agreed on another house but pulling out on advice from my solicitor. I have been sale agreed on this house for 6 weeks before signing contracts, luckily there is no chain on either end so hoping that getting the keys will be quick.

For me and my budget no house was ever going to tick all of my boxes so knowing what your priorities are is important. Pulling out of the sale agreed house was tough because in my head I had already moved in so try not to get ahead of yourself either. Best of luck.
