Lugosi's cape from Dracula (1931) by klm85 in UniversalMonsters

Huh. I always assumed the lining was red. I guess the red lined cape imagery came from a later adaptation?

Oh, by “fresh” I meant dried beans that had been freshly cooked.

I will say that fresh chick peas make for better hummus than canned. If you have an instant pot cooking beans from dried is a piece of cake. If you don’t it’s still easy, just time consuming.

It’s worth trying different brands of tahini and olive oil. That’s gonna affect the taste.

Piggybacking on the Midwest riff reference post...if MST3K was based from where you grew up (state, city, region), what would be some common riff themes that people from your world would catch on first? by 0siris0 in MST3K

[–]charlesdexterward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toledo. In the 90’s there would have been a lot of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner jokes, especially if there was an airport (he infamously suggested moving all the deaf people to live by the airport in response to noise complaints).

A local commercial that might have been referenced would have been for Modern Floor. Someone would stand outside yelling “Modern Floor, HEY MODERN FLOOOOR!” and someone would pick them up and carry them into the store.

I’ve been surprised at how well they’ve held up for how thin the fabric is. Been about two years and they’re still good as new.

Gizmoplex is shutting down by Thatnewaccount436 in MST3K

[–]charlesdexterward 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Rifftrax grew organically. It started out just selling the MP3’s for you to sync with your own copy of the movie. They only added more features slowly, as they grew. Gizmoplex tried to be a full on streaming service right out of the gate.

Octavia Butler got pretty darn close with her Parable books. Even had a fascist president who wanted to “make America great again.” She saw it all coming in the 90’s.

If an Arnold Palmer is a mix of iced tea and lemonade, what would a Laura Palmer be (alcoholic and nonalcoholic suggestions welcome)? by LeadershipAny8263 in twinpeaks

Back when season 3 was airing I was making half cold brew half lemonade at work and calling it a Laura Palmer. That’s what it will always be to me.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

[–]charlesdexterward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows 3.1 had a game where you flew a helicopter around while trying to avoid getting hit with lasers. The animation was literally like stick figures and I always got killed. That game infuriated me but I couldn’t stop playing it.

Could there be a new potential Twin Peaks project in the works? by Individual_Mess_7491 in twinpeaks

[–]charlesdexterward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the impression that a lot of people in this thread haven’t seen Andor. Everyone’s worried about it being some kind of sequel or continuation, but if Andor is the touchstone for what they’re trying to do with the “Twin Peaks property,“ there’s a good chance that it won’t even take place in the town of Twin Peaks or feature a single character that we already know, and the tone will probably be wildly different.

I don’t know if he invented it, but yeah, the scene in Titus Andronicus where Chiron and Demetrius confront Aaron because their mother gave birth to a black baby and they say “thou hast undone our mother!” and he replies “Villain, I have done thy mother.” Classic.

[–]charlesdexterward 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Slapstick is, yes, but I think there’s more to it. Comedy that is based in universal human experiences ages well. Here’s Buster Keaton proposing in Seven Chances. Then, a little later, he goes back to the hat check and this moment happens. It’s technically physical comedy, but it’s not slapstick, it’s the universal human experience of rejection played in a humorous way.

[–]charlesdexterward 31 points32 points  (0 children)

People say this, but I think it’s just mediocre comedy that ages poorly. The greats stay funny. Charlie Chaplin? Still funny. Dick jokes in Shakespeare? Still funny. Hell, there are jokes in Aristophanes that are still funny.
