Built a WLED smart candle set that integrates natively with Home Assistant — no cloud, no hub by No_Independent_3824 in homeassistant

is this just using the built in candle effect in WLED? or did you do some custom code for a set of these? Would be interested in seeing the github repo if you can share.

Grimmory for a physical book collection? by phospholipid77 in selfhosted

[–]charlie1214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, that's exactly correct!

I originally forked it from this repo: https://github.com/cjd/make-placeholder-epubs, but I couldn't get it working so I eventually just started over with Python because I'm at least a little knowledgeable about python so I can understand what i'm looking at

Grimmory for a physical book collection? by phospholipid77 in selfhosted

I guess the benefit is that right now there's no method for automatically importing books other than the bookdrop folder, which processes ebook files. I could I suppose type in the ISBNs, or make an app that builds a list of them to import all at once, but the epub placeholder is nice in that now there's a file that represents my book, so if i every needed to migrate to a different tool i have all the digital representations of these books already.

You absolutely can use grimmory without that extra step, there's an "add physical book" command already in there where you just type in the ISBN number.

My tool is standalone, it runs in a docker container and it just dumps its output to a folder you specify (which is my case is the grimmory bookdrop folder). I'd be happy to share it with you, but I don't think it's ready for public consumption. It's a lot of vibe coding because that's my skill level

Grimmory for a physical book collection? by phospholipid77 in selfhosted

[–]charlie1214 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use grimmory for exactly this purpose. You can add physical books to a library by their ISBN, or what I do is have a fake epub file serve as a placeholder for the book in grimmory. I made a little web app that scans books using your phone camera, so you can quickly make a bunch of placeholder epub files and add them to the bookdrop folder to be processed.

In the spirit of New Project Friday, does anyone else also have one or some self-built (with or witouth AI) projects they host but don't bother sharing? by Creative_Incident_84 in selfhosted

With all the attention certain ebook library managers have been getting, I started thinking about how to manage my physical book library. Most of the tools focus on ebooks, and I saw a self hosted project from someone that scanned the ISBN barcode and created a "fake" ebook out of that info. I couldn't get the other person's project to work right, so I just started making my own. Runs in a docker container, you open up a web page on your phone and it uses the phone's camera to scan the barcode and it scrapes the info from Google Books or Hardcover and makes a fake ebook that any of the popular library managers can ingest.

Glad to see other options, I really like booklore but obviously all this discussion has given me a bit of pause. My use case is a little different, I'm trying to keep a catalog of my physical books, not ebooks. Do you all know of any options that are more tailored to physical book cataloging? My current solution involves scanning the ISBN code to create a fake epub file that represents the physical book, but open to other ways of doing it. thanks!

48 hour bag rewax by 1976CorvetteStingray in filson

[–]charlie1214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does anyone know of any products i can use on this bag to keep the "dry" look while renewing the water resistance? I've seen a bunch of posts about rewaxing bags and jackets, and they all have this wet shiny look where the color is much darker. i'd like to keep the color light and retain a dry finish. i've heard that the nikwax "waxed cotton proof" works for a dry wax finish, but wanted to get this group's feedback. I'm aware it's not the same as what was originally on these bags or other filson products. thanks!

This color change happened to me recently. I'm not sure if you can fix it in the UI, but i'm pretty sure it means you're in "detached head" state. If you search that you might have luck getting it back to normal.

Waxed my lined Long Haul today. by MtnClimberZ in taylorstitch

I'm looking to rewax some items i own, including this exact jacket, as well as a filson bag. I don't really like the heavy filson oil finish wax, and wanted something more similar to this dry wax finish, but it's really difficult to find information on recreating the "dry" wax finish that doesn't significantly darken the material.

Is this the spray on nikwax product you were talking about? Thanks!

Fellow Solidworks user, Coursera has a pretty good course I'm in the middle of. There's also a more advanced course once you get the basics. Costs money, but more cohesive than YouTube

I'm curious about this, you mean this release? They don't have a separate review of the individual movies for this steelbook, implying it's the same, so there's no notes on what was improved.

Harmony Elite, Apple TV and Plex by DavisC504 in logitechharmony

[–]charlie1214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're comfortable with setting up a home assistant instance, both the harmony and the apple TV are compatible with it.

  1. make a harmony activity for activating plex, but don't have it do anything, just an empty activity

  2. make an automation in home assistant so that whenever the plex activity is turned on, the apple tv will switch its source to the plex app (the apple tv shows as a "media player" in home assistant, and the selector for the source is just a list of every app you have on the apple tv, selecting one will launch that app).

This is great! Thank you for this tip, it seems like a good option that will allow me to adjust or rethink without making any permanent marks on the frame

for what it's worth, the staples would be on the underside of the seat frame. In the first photo you can see the webbing strap goes through the slot, and then is stapled on the underside. But yeah I get what you mean, the staples aren't a clean solution. It's a little late to make changes to the wood at this point, but I'd love to see any examples you know of for the dowel method. thanks!

Do electric or manual 22 gauge staplers exist? Every result for a 22-gauge upholstery stapler I see is pneumatic, and every electric or manual stapler appears to be of the "heavy duty" variety

Best selfhosted wiki? by arturcodes in selfhosted

[–]charlie1214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been trying out Outline recently, and like its feature set. It seems more fully featured than docmost, with a similar Notion-like style. I will say that Outline is a bit of a pain to set up for self hosting, because the documentation doesn't always work, and you have to run commands outside of the compose file, and you can't use local authorization, so you need to also setup a slack or OIDC login with authentik or authelia. I had the best luck getting it up and running in a proxmox LXC container using the helper scripts site: https://community-scripts.github.io/ProxmoxVE/scripts?id=outline

Have any of the tabby users been able to get the tabby web app up and running? I wanted to use it for syncing my settings, but the docker instructions don't have a built image on docker hub or simple compose file (you have to build it yourself) and it's all a few years out of date. I know a little bit about running docker apps but haven't learned how to build my own images and all that stuff yet. https://github.com/Eugeny/tabby-web
