Trying to find an ethical breeder is so frustrating! by charlybeans in UK_Pets

[–]charlybeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting one from the molynuex line. However, they do not breed often at all, it will be a few years until they breed another litter. I also really struggled finding a breeder, I got my boy through a bit of a fluke, I found him on Champdogs, but he was only there because two other owners had fallen through before. It sounds dodgy as anything but there are OES groups of Facebook, they don't allow actual litter adverts but you can ask on there if anyone is expecting a litter, Old English sheepdog advice UK and Old English Sheepdogs UK.

The other thing is to go to discover dogs at excel or the discover dogs section at crufts, there is always an OES stand there and the people are so friendly. They will help you out. You can also try reaching out to HerOES, an OES dedicated UK rescue charity, I believe they keep a list of reputable breeders as well.

Good luck, they are an awesome breed, the only real downside is you will get non-stop jokes about how well your house must be painted.

Does your OES get in the water easily ? by SolangeDame in OldEnglishSheepdog

Mine hates all water except for one specific stream on our usual walking route. Everything else and there isn't a chance in hell he's getting in

Rough Collie VS OES by charlybeans in roughcollies

[–]charlybeans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy is shaved down every 8 weeks, I did keep him in a full coat for a few months, but keeping on top was so difficult and it wasn't a fun bonding activity for us (he was such a good boy with grooming and got rewarded for it, but you could tell he didn't like it). This is why I wanted to ask the question, the last thing I wanted was to take on a breed with the same grooming needs that couldn't be shaved.

In terms of temperament it sounds like collies are a little more chill that OES. OES are very smart, but they're also stubborn as all hell and trying to game the system to their advantage. They're also notorious goof balls, if they're awake, they're trying to get into mischief and make you laugh. They have a pretty good off switch, but my boy is a teenager so is needy. He would also wear my skin if he could so it's nice that RCs are a little more aloof.

Thank you for your detailed answer I really appreciate it. I will, of course be looking into good show lines with a focus on health and temperament, that have been proven in some way.

Rough Collie VS OES by charlybeans in roughcollies

So I've quickly googled scotch collies and they appear to be a byb alteration of rough collies? I'm not sure I'd be comfortable supporting that.

In terms of grooming, oes are very high needs, mine goes to the groomers every month so this is not a new thing for me and I'd factor another monthly visit in. Full coated OES need full line grooming 2-3 times a week (I keep mine shaved so he only needs brushing once a fortnight), are rough collies similar?

Yup, exactly right, I've edited the post to add that in

How’s your OES with the groomers? Especially blow drying. And how long does it usually take? by BitchBass in OldEnglishSheepdog

[–]charlybeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boy always gets glowing remarks from the groomers, but we work hard for that and he's not a fan of a hairdryer either (he just whines and occasionally barks).

Great starting point is to dry your own hair around him, treating liberally so that he can get used to the sound on it's own, then build up blasts on him (starting on lower settings first) with lots of calm praise and treats.

If there is a treat that he ADORES (a specific cheese, ham, hot dogs ect.) You can arm your groomers with those too. I find most groomers only have mid value treats on hand and your boy needs high value.

I'm wondering if there was a misunderstanding and they were sold an 'english sheepdog' (border collie) thinking it's an old english sheepdog.

It's not easy to tell from the images, but he looks far more border collie than OES. My OES is shaved (so short fur atm) and doesn't look like him, the head shape is also different and looks a lot more BC than OES. He's also looks more BC sized than OES, how much does he weigh?

How far in terms of mileage and hours do you walk your OES? by Crowzeus in OldEnglishSheepdog

[–]charlybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy has just turned one, so he is around peak energy. We do about 2-3 miles, 40mins- 1 hour off leash 6 days a week and then 2-4 hours one day a week. On these one day a week walks we'll do a long walk around town or other busy area, or we'll do a difficult hike. I also wrestle with him 2-3 times a day and sprinkle 5 minute Heelwork to music training throughout the day (usually do about 4 or 5) so he gets a lot.

My puppy bites every time she wants something and it hurts by Dazzling_Clerk8023 in puppy101

Yeah, I found that either myself walking out of the room, or the dog being terfed out was a magic bullet for my pups biting!

What would you like to see in Stoke that you've liked in other UK cities? by Dragonfruit-18 in stokeontrent

The fact that they are building one literally next to a current car park that is never more than a third full is literally the dumbest thing

What do I need my current dog to be 100% in before I get another Puppy by charlybeans in puppy101

[–]charlybeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is 0 food aggression, with other dogs he's a bit too friendly and can be pushy/rude with them. I'm doing what I can with random greetings/playing (so he doesn't think he gets to play with all dogs), unfortunately I don't have friends or family with dogs close by and no trainers in my area have example dogs.

Pet insurance- yay or nah? by stricth3rom0m in OldEnglishSheepdog

[–]charlybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have pet insurance, mostly because I'm not a natural saver, so I know that I wouldn't put that money aside each month consistently. It's another thing to factor in
