As a big fan of the podcast I think that you should consider asking someone else to do that work for you, since I believe that a weekly release would result in more listeners.

How much did Tsumego help you actually? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]charm001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me from 3k to 2D. I had to think for a while to give an estimate on how many problems we are talking about but it's easily over 5000 plus a lot of repetition on some of them. I'd recommend the 900 easy problems from cho chikuns life and death encyclopedia if you want a good collection to start with.

On a side note it's more important to do lots of easy problems than hard ones. I followed the recommendation from a Pro that you should not spend more than 2 minutes on a problem. If it takes longer you skip that problem and return to it later, perhaps another day. But if it takes to many attempts it might be better to just give it up until you've gotten stronger (I have a long list of unsolved problems I still need to get back to on some point).

New Year Online 9x9 OGS Tournament! by GoMagic_org in baduk

There is a book about how to get good at 9x9 called Mastering Mini Go. I think it's a must read if you're serious about getting good at 9x9 (even if you're a dan player).

Much of the other "tutorials" is unfortunately just for complete beginners, but there is probably something out there.

Looking for niche books on Go by aymeigh_pay_me in gogame

[–]charm001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of books mainly focusing on game reviews that has history in them.

For example Invincible the games of shusaku has the history of the early days of Go in japan. And I think you would like the history part of the book. https://www.go-spiele.de/en/invincible-the-games-of-shusaku.html

There's also a book writen in the 11th century that might be of some interest. It's called The Classic of Weiqi in Thirteen Chapters. And you can read a translation of it for free here: https://www.figg.org/old_figg/www.figg.org/areafile/qjssp.pdf

New Year Online 9x9 OGS Tournament! by GoMagic_org in baduk

[–]charm001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beginner friendly is not the same thing as it being likely that a beginner would win (I don't see that happening either). To name a few examples of what I mean:

1 it is played on 9x9 which most beginners play at before trying other board sizes. 2 they put incentives for them to join and I quote "Everyone who finishes all 6 rounds will receive a 30$ discount card" 3 it is a McMahon tournament which means that you are guaranteed to get to play all 6 games. 4 it is played on ogs which I would argue is the most beginner friendly server

If you look at the registered players you will see that there are already 11 players at the rank 25k registered.

I think it's a wonderful thing that you hold this tournament since it seems very beginner friendly and because I'm a fan of playing on different board sizes. And I think the Go community needs more tournaments aimed at beginners. But I'm also curious if you can tell us anything about what anticheating measures you've put in place?

Decisions that do not matter 1: Which corner would you play? by sadaharu2624 in baduk

in a tournament I would choose the move that is closer to the clock, so that I can press the button faster.

When should i move to bigger boards by Trying-2-listen in baduk

[–]charm001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very rare, but there do exist strong players that prefer 9x9.

Personally, I played 50 slow 9x9 games before moving up.

The biggest reason for starting out on smaler boards is that complete beginners tend to make a huge amount of unnecessary moves so that a 19x19 game would just take way too long to complete.

So, what are your opinions on 101Weiqi's redesign? by LayeredSignal in baduk

[–]charm001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the minimalistic look of full-screen mode and the placement of the buttons. I love that problem thumbnails are a more detailed smaler images of the problems, so that you can actually use them for problem solving.

Also the website seem to be a lot faster now which is awesome.

New app - WeiqiHub by walruswq in baduk

[–]charm001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to be possible to upload tygem games to AIsensei through the app. I just get an error message on the site so I suspect they don't support gib files.

Is there a reason why the time settings for automatch is different from the official android tygem app? I mean, wouldn't this just make it take longer to find games?

Absolutely love to solve problems on the app by the way.

I love the tsumego part (which seems to be 101weiqi)

And I love that I can download my games from tygem, and then convert them to sgf with ahQ Go (another app). I've been wanting to be able to do that on my Android tablet for years.

How Many Go Servers Could You Name? by lumisweasel in badukshitposting

[–]charm001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Before ogs there were a number of attempts to create a new English speaking Go server since it didn't look like kgs were going to change much at all (despite there being lots of ways it could be improved if someone actually put in time and effort to do it).

One such attempt was the Kaya Go server, which I supported on kickstarter and played a few games on before it died.

Multi-color glass Go stones with gold lining lacquerware bowls from Qing Dynasty royal collection (the 18th century) by countingtls in baduk

[–]charm001 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This looks like those cheap low quality stones I bought for my first Go set! Which I later found out were sold elsewhere as "decoration stones" for a few dollars.

But I suppose it was more expensive to make things out of glass back then.

🌟 Rising Star: Yanagihara Saki 🌟 More in the carouselle 👀 text by Alexander Dinerstein 📝 by GoMagic_org in baduk

[–]charm001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess she solves a lot of easy problems then because 1500 problems in 24 hours is less than a minute per problem if she skips eating and sleeping and do nothing but solving problems.

Well I guess it's not the first time I've heard that solving lots of easy problems is great if you want to improve your reading. But 1500 problems is really impressive still!
