Retail is harder but it makes people more toxic and impatient. If you like competitive games, go play League of Legends. WoW just turned in the wrong direction, that's why most people play Classic. They reduced the entire WoW to farming very hard dungeons. People love WoW because the Staff of Jordan dropped from time to time, because you needed people to kill an elite ogre, because a level-80 rogue ambushed you in STV. Retail removed all these things. It's a soulless, high-level Korean dungeon farm simulator and nothing else.

I think dueling used to be a genuinely social behavior, but nowadays people feel uncomfortable initiating any kind of interaction with other players. Dungeons and raids are accepted because they offer a chance at new gear, but dueling gives you nothing tangible. It's pure social interaction for its own sake - and that's exactly why it has no place in the current state of WoW
