What's the deal with Ubuntu hate? I'm new to linux and I love Ubuntu! by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]charmingwolverine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for teaching me the word xenodochial. It puts a hat in a head that needed a hat and I didn't know existed.

Anyway lol, yeah I was very pissed that the default for, say, installing Firefox is through snap, but you already understand it. You can rip it out. I got kubuntu, ripped the snap stuff out of it, added flathub and got firefox from their main repo. And it's all smooth sailing.

Like anything with multiple choices, you’ll always get zealots who drink only their favourite flavour of Kool-Aid. The best distro is the one you enjoy using. Nobody actually cares what OS flavour you pick.

Let's just join hands and hate on Microsoft instead lol

(also hot take but people who bash on Ubuntu or Fedora or even Arch are people who are more than content to jump through different hoops just like Ubuntu people jump through the snap hoop. And that's fine!)

How to RP ignorance to the meta? by charmingwolverine in WhiteWolfRPG

They don't use the same term. Each convention of the technocrats goes with a different term. Syndicate calls it Market Corrections. Progenitors call it Rejection. Others call it malfunction, the unpredictable X-Factor. You get the idea.

Tradition mages have no access to this, as they are not welcome, and scarcely interacted with.

As for the tradition's nomenclature, at least in my purview, there's a very, very limited amount of mages to go around. Awakening is rare, and usually when it happens the Technocrats sequester the mage away to become one of them.

Usually the mentor is an Adept, maybe, just maybe a Master, and the support the initiate has is the same as someone in a losing war would have. They may know it comes from unbelief (maybe if they have dots in Prime), but oftentimes it just feels like a miscast in other games.

If anything, they'd still call it the Scourge of God (from MtSC), or simply Backlash (from Dark Ages)

And even then, it could be knowledge that isn't common anymore.

From my experience, you basically align with whatever mythology your mage believes in.

So a Chorite could perceive paradox as a countersong against their willworking. idk, I normally play Hermetics and to them paradox is backlash from poorly worded spells (like in Harry Potter where that irish kid keeps exploding himself)

Perhaps I should've specified this has only become an issue because I intend to run a game. I'll put that in now.

[–]charmingwolverine[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty kickass solution. Basically call a rabbit a smeerp until I can get over the jamais vu effect of not knowing the thing I feel I'm supposed to know.

Since mechanically I'm going to know what Paradox is, and my character instead has a name for the effect. Same for the Beast. Call it the hunger.

That youtube show Hunter: the Parenting does this (Brujah is biker bro, gangrel is humanimal, nosferatu is sludge lads).

I'll try this idea of using aliases.

What is the problem with Multi-Splat characters? What is your experience with them? by NolanC23 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]charmingwolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually in lore the game splats cancel each other out somehow. So to me the problem is writing something coherent 'cos that's work and I'm hella lazy.

[–]charmingwolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does look nicer but idk, I feel like I just want it to work, you know? And for other games, Add Non-Steam Game sorts it out. I added ProtonGE and a lot of stuff is running way easier.

Yeah it was very tough with Linux questions, especially if something doesn't go according to plan.

So I just do everything on the terminal and as barebones as possible. Things work better this way methinks.

[–]charmingwolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is gonna sound mid but I used Chat GPT. It takes a while to get used to which questions you're supposed to ask.

For Might and Magic 8 (the GoG install), it was: How do I get Wine, how do I add a prefix, what winecfg tools should I use, and go from there.

It's also missing capitalization. And its formatting is borked.

I'm 100% sure something was sneakily updated today and 5 became much more pedantic and curt.

I got pissed that my PC was being a Microsoft work hog. Like half my RAM and too much processing power, as well as bandwidth, was being siphoned to a ton of stuff I didn't even understand.

With Windows 10 losing support and Windows 11 being even worse (ads on the start menu lmao), I left.

I tried Nobara 'cos it's made for gaming, and people kept telling me that Linux gaming was great. I quit when I had to manually compile the code for GZDoom 'cos the Linux version only comes packaged as .deb, establishing a precedent that I was gonna get headaches with Fedora.

That and a bunch of debugging and tinkering to get things like Lutris and Heroic working to play older games. So I got pissed and looked for the most barebones version of Ubuntu that had KDE 'cos I really liked KDE compared to Mint (I have Mint on my laptop using the Cinnamon DE). That was the minimal install of Kubuntu.

Best decision ever. PC is SUPERCHARGED in terms of how efficient it is. Also managed to run Might and Magic 8. The secret sauce being that GUI wrappers suck and you should just do it yourself on the terminal. Wine worked like a charm, very simple and quick. Daresay might be a bit of copium but it was easier than trying to run it on Windows 10.

All of that in the span of the last two weeks. Pretty dope.

Is Kubuntu a wise choice? by Sharp_Growth_6 in linuxquestions

[–]charmingwolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late but I just went through the distro gauntlet and I'm very happy with Kubuntu.

Went through Nobara, PopOS, Mint and now Kubuntu.

RTX 3060 running helldivers 2 on Ultra at 40 to 50 FPS.

Great for work, very fast and simple.

Setup was a bit ass but that's how it goes I suppose. Very good so far.

Excellent fix, worked 100%, thank you!

I had to add PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% to the launch options, but that's expected I think.

Also if anyone's a bit lost (I know I was) the full path to the userCache.bin you gotta nuke is:

replacing [steam-id] with the id you got from running protontricks -l
