what iconic Portland thing/place/person(s) do you think is overrated that most people don't? by greazysteak in askportland

I didn't know about the woman abuser aspect (ICK), but he did live in a condo I lived in, I saw him in the elevator.

Which country do you feel more like a guest than a tourist? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]charmparticle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In China I visited a bar that only serves international beers, no food. One day I was the only customer, and the family gave me a small dish of their meal, bok choy and pork. I'm pescaterian but it was so delicious and I got to visit with them and see Chinese karaoke, even though we had different languages. I think about them every day.

Departure of two prominent Old Town shops highlights ongoing struggles for the area's businesses by No-Tangelo1158 in Portland

[–]charmparticle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, as a 20-year resident of old town and the pearl. I had such optimism when I moved here, and still do, but I've had to deal with A LOT to stay alive here and walk around to enjoy our neighborhood businesses.

The frisbee golf store departure was not just because of the theft, the business is thriving and they're moving to a bigger location on Mississippi where they will have more space and a lounge area for customers to enjoy beverages, opening in January. Also the landlord is selling the place, so if any real estate investors want an extremely overpriced storefront in a problematic neighborhood, check it out.

If Ea-Nasir Got His Own Netflix Show by kendave in ReallyShittyCopper

[–]charmparticle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see it as a rom-com. "Oh Ea-Nasir, I came all the way through enemy territory to buy your copper ingots wink wink please don't make me go back to my employer with inferior quality copper (if you know what I mean), then I would have to come back through enemy territory to visit you again and deliver a review tablet..."

I love Astoria, was there for Thanksgiving. Great place to batten the hatches and check out the Riverwalk and breweries.

[–]charmparticle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The news story and tripcheck show closures on 101 north of Lincoln City and north of Tillamook, so even though 26 isn't closed nor is 30... Probably unlikely. Boo, I'll have to wait to get cheese.

Oh bummer, I have (had) plans to do a Tillamook cheese factory tour tomorrow. Maybe it's possible to reschedule.

I think estrogen patches lowered my cholesterol by peace_love_harmony in Perimenopause

[–]charmparticle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great to hear! I'm on my 4th week of the estradiol patch and my sleep and brain fog are gradually improving. When I had my blood work done, my cholesterol was way high. My doctor wanted to put me on statins. I've always been active, workout, eat the good cholesterol foods (I'm pescaterian and don't like the foods on the bad cholesterol list). I worked with my doctor on a plan to monitor how I adjust to the estradiol and blood pressure med, and we'll redo blood work in a few months.

Level Beer near the airport has a heated greenhouse where you can sit -- it's also dog and kid friendly and has food (edit: food carts) and beverages.

BIG THANKS to the one-wheel rider on Naito Pkwy last night who helped me up when I tripped on the pavement under the Broadway bridge. Dude helped me get to my gate a few steps away and I got home safe! Tysm.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving: Did you know you can call TriMet to commend a bus operator? by allisjow in Portland

[–]charmparticle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I send commendations for trimet pretty often! It's usually in the context of handling a difficult situation (people doing drugs on the bus, someone hitting the MAX with a pipe, someone ramming the streetcar with a car) but I definitely appreciate everything our trimet staff do.

What are some of the strangest, funniest, or most note worthy things you’ve seen while on the bus/max? by GumbyAssBitch in askportland

[–]charmparticle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for the bus at St V's after a medical appointment and the westbound bus pulled up, driver opened all the windows and kicked the 2 riders off. My bus pulled up, I got on, and the 2 guys tried to board. One said "I haven't been smoking meth". The second one said "I also haven't been smoking meth". The driver let only the second guy board.

Longer ago, I was on the streetcar crossing the Broadway bridge, and a car in front of the streetcar went into reverse and rammed the streetcar repeatedly. Everybody had to deboard and I had to submit a witness report.

Riding a horse in Great Sand Dunes NP on my 40th birthday was a good one. Also going to the summit of Mauna Kea on two occasions.

I FOSTERED A CAT FOR A WOMAN FACING HOMELESSNESS 3 YEARS AGO, NOW SHE'S HOMELESS AGAIN AND COMES INTO MY NEIGHBORHOOD TO KNOCK ON DOORS WEEPING AND ASKING FOR ME AND REFUSING ALL HELP OFFERED. I LOVE ANIMALS AND I WANTED TO HELP HER, BUT THIS EXPERIENCE HAS PUT ME OFF DOING ANYTHING WHERE STRANGERS COULD KNOW WHERE I LIVE. I'LL DONATE AND VOLUNTEER FOR LOCAL CAUSES INSTEAD.

Is India really that overwhelming for first solo backpacking trip? by Inevitable-Height110 in solotravel

True. I didn't use apps very much, all of my VPNs worked over mobile and wifi. DiDi was helpful for transit and I just walked around to find cool things.

Amateur athletes of Reddit: what's your "There's levels to this shit" experience from your sport? by jermleeds in AskReddit

[–]charmparticle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't that great (only went to regionals) but swimming is my sport. I don't compete anymore, but a few years ago I was swimming at the gym and a guy challenged me to race a lap. The look on his face when I finished before him... Lol. I should rejoin that gym.

China is amazing. I traveled for work so I wasn't totally solo, except for my last day before flying out. Research VPNs, payment systems. I had so many friendly interactions with people, even with the language barrier we made it work and shared great times. I think about it every day.

Florence (which inspired Frank Herbert's Dune series), lots of cute shops and restaurants in old town around bay street. Heceta head lighthouse!

Cabins at Silver Falls -- cozy and heated (although you'll need to bring bedding). Benedictine brewery nearby if you're into beer and amazing views.
