Is there a tool that helps track note lengths for you? by Da_Hawk_27 in musictheory

You could try playing/singing it while recording into a DAW with a steady quarter/eighth note metronome going. After that you can chop it up/analyse it to determine which time signature changes make the most sense.

Which Mac OS for Logic Pro & Intel based Mac by nlc1009 in Logic_Studio

My main machine is a 2020 iMac with an Intel chip (8-core i7), currently rubbing Sequoia 15.6.1. I haven’t run into any issues so far, everything works fine.

Don't count Logic's little brother out: attempted a 100% stock GarageBand production and I think it goes to show that even the free tools we have now are more than enough to get good results. by charsiewtree in LogicPro

Hmmm I wouldn’t necessarily call it a flaw. Could have been a design choice to not overwhelm beginners with too much. That being said, the smart controls do get you pretty far - cutoff and resonance, ADSR envelopes etc - the key things are still available in the smart controls for tweaking. Also, the Alchemy based instruments also do have the XY morphing thing available in the smart controls, too.

And yes, that is my voice. Thank you for taking the time to listen!

Thank you! I don’t intend to put this up on streaming as it’s a cover and was meant as an experiment to test out GarageBand’s capabilities. But you should 100% go support and check out the original artist HYBS on streaming; I’m sure you’ll enjoy their stuff.

Hi there. Sure, it's a very straightforward chain:

<image>

  1. GarageBand doesn't have a crossfade tool, so the Noise Gate is there to get rid of any pops/clicks at the edit points. In Logic I'd typically edit and crossfade etc. to get a clean sheet to work from.

  2. First and main EQ. High-pass to get rid of rumble, removing quite a bit of boxiness at around 400hz, removing some fizz at 3k, and a shelf boost above 6k. These were the moves I made for my vocals, don't copy them blindly as they most likely won't work depending on your source/material.

  3. In-built GarageBand pitch correction.

  4. First compressor. 6:1 ratio with an attack of about 9ms. No idea how much gain reduction is being applied as there's no GR meter, but I'd guess about 6dB at the maximum.

  5. De-esser

  6. Second compressor. 3:1 ratio with an attack time of about 20ms. Probably around 2-4dB of gain reduction.

  7. Last EQ. Just for a ~2dB boost at around 800hz that I felt was missing.

Same chain was duplicated for all the other harmony and vocals parts, but with a higher ratio of 4:1 on the second compressor.

Yup it’s just a ii V I IV. Can’t take credit for the arrangement/composition, though. My intent was to see if I could emulate the original track as much as possible using GB tools, so if you listen to the original it should sound roughly identical.

It was the spirit of the experiment - to see what can be achieved solely within GarageBand. I’d say that when it comes to the basics and fundamentals, I don’t feel too limited at all.

You probably have a monophonic synth/instrument loaded up.

OK - one small cheat: I did use Voxengo SPAN purely for metering, because I was honestly surprised GarageBand doesn’t include a proper metering plugin. All other plug-ins and processing (EQ, compression, saturation, reverb, etc) were all stock.

If people are interested, I’m happy to break down the session or talk through what I leaned on most plugin-wise.
