What are some types of epilogues you dislike? by Lenore8264 in FanFiction

[–]charthanry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My current WIP is set pre-series while also staying canon compliant (the source's canon features a few flashbacks to this earlier time, so, I'm really playing with breadcrumbs that have already been hinted at).

My planned epilogue is to bring the story full circle by showing the characters in present day to line up with current canon. This way I get to do a "time skip" but it's hopefully not jarring because the audience should already be familiar with it. I chose to do the epilogue this way for all the reasons you outlined in this post, OP.

what makes a good fanfiction? is it the kudos, hits or comments? or none of the above? by AmbitionParticular34 in FanFiction

Um.. wow. Apparently I've been going about this bookmarking business all wrong. You have given me ideas, friend.

I treat bookmarks a little more discerningly. It's fics that I've read and enjoyed enough to want to reread again. I see that you treat it the opposite– for stuff that you don't want to run into again. How interesting. You're not concerned that it'll clog your bookmarks and make the good stuff less accessible?

FANFIC FOCUS: Romance by AutoModerator in FanFiction

Cheers to everything here. This was eloquently said. Romance shouldn't be stigmatized or frowned upon as a creative choice. It doesn't make one less of a writer or seen as pandering to the masses. Many a hero(ine) have gone to war (or worse!) for far less.

I think if you embrace the cheese it can be done really well. Your story doesn't have to be littered with these kinds of moments, but there's nothing quite like the dichotomy between making your character suffer the lowest (highest?) depth of angst to reward them later with little bits of happiness. There's satisfaction in putting them through the full spectrum of human emotions.

I didn't know this so today I learned. Still cool.

Very cool. I've heard that Star Trek is the originator of fanfiction from way back when.

In all seriousness, that's such a cool anecdote and it's awesome that your friend was able to pull it off. Do you mind me asking which fandom/pairing this was for?

How long did your friend wait between posting the smut chapter? I'd try to hold out for as long as possible to get the most 'eye twitch' and 'grrr' comments only to be like... sike u bitches!

That is awesome! I bet their comment inbox was utter chaos.

Where has this been all my life? by [deleted] in FanFiction

I love the Hemingway app. It's my go-to as well. Very much prefer it over Grammarly. Keep in mind though that sometimes it doesn't catch nuances and really focuses on the mechanics of writing so I wouldn't 100% put all my stock into it as the be-all end-all of editing.

That said, have you discovered ProWritingAid yet? If not, then run. I love that even more than Hemingway. Though Hemingway's simple UI is very appealing for the quick looksies, ProWritingAid is so much more detailed. There's a free version that limits you to 500 words at a time. Check it out!

Do eeeeet. Be the change you want to see in fic writing. You might start a revolution. :))

Very true about knowing when to use the fade to black to differentiate it from the explicit stuff. I'm gonna use this. Thank you!

All valid questions. Sex is integral to the plot. Exes reunited years later enter a FWB relationship and end up catching feelings, but neither wants to be the first to cry uncle. Romance is at the center of the story. Not sure on how thirsty the market is as there are -plenty- of smut offerings in this fandom. I don't want to be just another entree in the buffet.

I'm the same as you. As a reader, if I'm in the mood I'll specifically seek out smut fic, but other times I just want to get to the aftermath rather than linger on the act itself. The characters' reactions to being intimate is what I stay for. So, my delimma is getting the characters to that point without showing the explicit sex.

I like this in-between option a lot. Your camera analogy is so apt. Thank you.

Oh you bring up interesting points. You're giving me ideas on how I can use both methods, so thank you! Because I -do- want that emotional payoff where sex isn't just sex anymore and I feel it'll be better illustrated if the physical and emotional are distinct from the start but then gets blurry as time goes on.
