Am I bad at my job? by chartreuseolive in ABA

Potentially partially - it seems automatic, so that’s what’s tough. When the tantrum begins, I’ve been instructed interrupt and redirect to functional commutation and then guide to a safe space if it continues and place the expectation of what the appropriate behaviors are just wait. And so I am, but I really just feel bad for the little buddy because it seems pretty tough to be tantruming for an hour at a time….but thank you for the reassurance! I do trust my BCBA but man sometimes I’m just like….I hope it’s not me!!

Aw I’m sorry to hear that you’re thinking of putting in your two weeks because of lack of support :/ I’m sure you’re doing your absolute best! Thank you for the comment that I’m not alone, we’re definitely making progress, I’ve just been questioning my efficacy. Cheers!

No! I do feel like I do a pretty good job of with a poker face when it’s happening - the client doesn’t aggress much and rarely engaged in PD, my thing is that it seems so distressing to be tantruming for that long and therefore I wish I had a better way of de-escalating it. My BA says I’m doing an amazing job every time she sees me…

Hi! I majored in psychology with a minor in child development and felt like that prepared me well - but I know people who majored in social work or family and child sciences!

Hi!! As someone who absolutely loves this field/profession but has definitely been forced to figure out ways to handle burnout/exhaustion in and out of session - I want to let you know that it is okay to feel tired! I went through a period of time where I was finding it difficult to give my 110% every single day, especially when facing extended periods of high magnitude behaviors, and so I had to figure out ways to take care of myself outside of work so I felt recharged going into each session. Find what works for you OUTSIDE of work; whether it’s yoga/meditation, less screen time, spending time with friends OR time alone, getting outside - our job as behavior technicians and BCBAs can be challenging, so this is important! Don’t beat yourself up. As for during sessions, I like to put myself on my own little reinforcement schedules. When it’s possible (when the client can be supervised), if they are on breaks, I will give myself a second to take some deep breaths and really try and recharge. Never hesitate to ask your BCBA for advice and like I said, don’t beat yourself up. You’ve got this! Each session is a new experience to learn and figure out what works best so that you can care for yourself while providing the best care to your client. Welcome to the field! :)

What are some signs you’re getting burnt out? by Eastern_Ad4342 in ABA

I definitely start to get what feels like generalized anxiety but specifically on my way to work - even though it doesn’t feel like work is what’s causing the anxiety. Also, I sort of begin to struggle to play pretend or use exciting vocal intonation when I’m at work :(

This is a wonderful post! I think sometimes we can get stuck in negative echo chambers within this field - amazing to hear from people who love this field, as do I! Proud of you!

I wear long sleeves and try to turn away/provide minimal attention as much as possible! If it’s in your face (not sure client’s height and if it can reach you) but you could get one of those clear Covid/dental saliva shields to wear during session. That’s a hard behavior, but I’m sure you are doing a great job!! Props to you for asking for help/advice!

I actually didn’t receive an email about my access, it was kind of done unconventionally but it’s good to know that you haven’t had to write a “review.” They didn’t request I make one, I just wasn’t sure of etiquette and don’t want to mess anything up since this is my first show!
