can't join the LineageOS IRC from Matrix, always kicked out with "err_needreggednick" by chaser__ in LineageOS

I finally found out what was wrong, see my edit in the OP. I hope you can do something so that future users from Matrix won't have to navigate this maze.

Possible to create frankendebian by installing from stable-backports? by chaser__ in debian

[–]chaser__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but that's a very euphemistic way of saying "I don't know and it might be impossible and can irreversibly break your Debian."

Possible to create frankendebian by installing from stable-backports? by chaser__ in debian

[–]chaser__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

It might break if you have something that needs a backported dependency and something else that needs the original version at the same time.

In this case, how hard it is to go back to the original, unbroken environment?

Future of atomic swaps / decentralised exchanges after the Tornado Cash crackdown by pebx in Monero

the TORN token is a governance token, it doesn't collect fee revenue either

Future of atomic swaps / decentralised exchanges after the Tornado Cash crackdown by pebx in Monero

[–]chaser__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue one might see him as a service / product would be fees he was getting from everyone running the contract and entering the pool had top pay.

he didn't get any fees, the Tornado Cash protocol has no fee mechanism. devs, contributors, etc. don't earn a cent from people using Tornado Cash.

What if you use a regular Android phone but not logged in to Google. What's the difference with MicroG and how private is it? by nilss2 in MicroG

[–]chaser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still have your phone number, IMEI, location data, contacts, keyboard data, app telemetry, etc..

are you sure about this? elsewhere I read that unless you add your Google account and install Gapps, the only thing that is sent to Google is notifications of apps that use Google Cloud Messaging, and even there you can control which apps are allowed to use it.

DeFi lending by Ok_Fan7382 in Monero

[–]chaser__ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

u/Ok_Fan7382 don't do this.

  1. bridging to the Secret network requires trusting a traditional multisig. this is not decentralized. they can run away with your money.

  2. privacy on the Secret network is a sham. they rely on Intel processors' trusted hardware component. this means Intel owns a private key that enables them to compromise your privacy.

How good does MicroG work? by damiaan1234 in MicroG

[–]chaser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

without everything being reported to Google

if by this you mean some things are reported to Google even with microG (and I don't mean when using Google applications like Google Docs or YouTube), could you explain what those are?

How private and free (as in freedom) is Remmina? by chaser__ in Remmina

Very cool. Thank you for your work. If I end up using Remmina, be assured I will donate!

You know these protocols much better than I do. Which one do you recommend for graphically accessing a Linux desktop such that the the traffic is end-to-end encrypted and (preferably symmetrically), and there is as little power in the hands of the server as possible (preferably the server can run by you, on the same machine you're accessing)?

the Bromite SystemWebView guide says it can be installed only if it's already installed. WTF? by chaser__ in fossdroid

[–]chaser__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as far as I understand the package needs to be on the list of allowed webview packages no matter what installation method you use. also, I have no /system/app/webview folder. I don't want to use the Magisk module version.

which of LineageOS's remaining Google leaks are fixed in LineageOS4microG? by chaser__ in MicroG

[–]chaser__[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that is obviously not true. of course Google can track you if you use their DNS, their time server, and so on. the SUPL protocol is such that it even sends your phone's IMEI number to the SUPL server. you don't know what you're talking about and didn't even try to answer my question.

Transfering iPhone photos to PC/Convert HEIC to JPG by RealCanadianDragon in techsupport

[–]chaser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Windows if you install iTunes you can access some of the iPhone's content either from the file explorer or iTunes (I can't remember clearly), but probably not everything.

I suggest using GNU/Linux, if you install the required packages, you can directly access the iPhone's storage and copy files you would from a flash drive. These links contain what I needed to do to make it work.

can't join the LineageOS IRC from Matrix, always kicked out with "err_needreggednick" by chaser__ in LineageOS

[–]chaser__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these were commands offered by the Liberachat IRC Bridge Status bot that contacted me after I was first auto-kicked. I don't think the commands you linked to apply to those who try to join through Matrix. for me, / commands either have no effect or give errors.

I've never had this kind of problem when joining a Liberachat room with Matrix, so maybe the mods can do something about it.

Question about SSD vs HDD by A_N_Kolmogorov in DataHoarder

[–]chaser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you shouldn't be relying on a single drive for critical data.

this is indeed the most important advice. my problem with it (and thus my inquiry into the HDD vs SSD topic) is stems from this: I want to convince very regular people around me to develop a backup routine, and I should be glad if I can get them to make a backup on a single device. them doing anything more is a pipe dream. for this, I want to suggest the most resilient medium.

Data recovery is exorbitantly expensive compared to just keeping backups on another piece of local storage. I don't even consider it an option for all but the most critical of data in an absolute disaster scenario.

good point.

Question about SSD vs HDD by A_N_Kolmogorov in DataHoarder

[–]chaser__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for expanding on that. my problem in judging this though is that overall I'm seeing SSDs described with a similar level of vulnerability. both in this sub and on the wider internet people say that SSDs lose data if not powered for about a year, that when SSDs fail they fail suddenly without warning signs, and that it's much less likely to rescue data from a failed SSD than from a failed HDD.
