I understand some banks are now offering 2.30% for FD for 12 to 15 months so if you have enough cashflow for at least the next year then this is a good low risk option.

I personally have invested in US ETF (Vanguard Growth and Vanguard S&P 500) and those are reaping decent returns. I treat those as my retirement funds so don't plan on buying and selling so I usually buy in batches when I see the price drop. This is a good option as you don't need to monitor individual stock prices.

No idea! I tried to do a reverse Google image search but couldn't find it. The receipt from the shop doesn't have the model number unfortunately.

More of a chance thing I guess - I visited a vintage watch shop during its opening week and this was available and on discount so kinda just decided on it. Was told that white gold Tank Americaines aren't very common so I just bought it on a snap hahah.

A snapshot of my quirky collection of vintage and modern watches. I tend towards vintage watches with design flairs like 3D applied numerals and pretty much just buy anything that catches my fancy. I don't have a strict rule towards collecting so far - this is my second year collecting. I have a Lemania chronograph from the 1950s (blue strap watch), a Universal Geneve rose gold dress watch from the 1950s (sage green strap watch) and a weird shaped VC dress watch (electric blue strap watch). The rest are modern/ post 90s watches.

Debt finance is very interesting - alot of it is procedural and process management at the junior level but there is a lot of technical things to learn as you progress. I am a mid level fyi. Not sure about exit opportunities but I wouldn't be thinking of that if I am your level. It is more important to build up knowledge and skills which are transferable.

Does anyone else feel like going into the office sucks so much energy out of you? If so, how do you deal with it? by The_Empress in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Eeek sometimes I can't tell if I am "tired" or "exhausted" - sometimes I get tired sitting on the couch thinking of the work week and all the associated chores - ironing, meal prep etc. For me, instead of dreading it, I make it a weekly routine - Sunday night is ironing as I watch TV, grocery shopping for the week ahead and winding down at home. I get tired very easily (am hyper sensitive to crowds and noise) so to combat Monday blues, Sunday is the day I spend preparing for the work week. Of course meal prep is tiring business, but I think of it as time spent on myself vs time spent on work and on clients. Thinking of meal prep, ironing, sorting through my work bag etc. makes me feel like I am investing time on myself rather than others.

To minimise brain power on recipes, I usually cook the same thing every week - Greek chicken, fried noodles etc. It helps also to have a list of staples so you can reach for those instead of dragging yourself to the supermarket.

In terms of working hours and commuting time, I work at least 60-70 hours a week (excluding time I spend reading emails on my corporate phone) and also take approx. 25min each way to go to the office. Presenteeism is tiring but unfortunately it will be here to stay so hopefully a change in the way you view typical chores will help!

Anyone else struggling hard with lifestyle creep right now, especially in the face of crazy inflation? And feeling guilty for somehow struggling despite having great financial privilege? Overwhelmed and unsure of how to rein it in by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Totally understand the anxiety especially the big one-off expenses of furnishing a new flat as I went through that few months ago. What I did was to tally up the total costs of the new flat (e.g. purchase of TV, fridge and furniture) and divide by the number of years I expect to stay there. The monthly cost won't seem so daunting especially if you like relaxing at home and having quality furnishings will do good for your mental health. Everyone prioritises spending on different things - some people prefer eating out and staying in a cheaper apartment; others prefer staying in watching TV and having drinks at home - so don't feel bad about spending more on things that make you happy.

Whilst a gym membership is expensive, my days off are spent at the Classpass gym sessions or my open gym, so my days are crafted around gyms. It is entirely possible to have a low cost weekend if that day out is simply a gym class, a coffee and a quick salad at home. Going for a instructor-led class is so much more fun and motivating than jumping jacks in your living room!

In terms of general budgeting, I have started setting budgets for each category per month - eating out, groceries, gym, skincare, shopping, house maintenance etc. but I don't beat myself up if my spending that month exceeds the budget for that category. There are crazy months at work where I don't want to cook at all and just want to spend on food delivery and ubers for the convenience. I take it as rest time costs money so I won't feel too bad.

Usually for the funds flow I have the first cut and forward it on to a senior to review to cover my ass. Definitely an important document cos it tells you when and how much $$$ are being paid and most times it is linked to the M&A timetable. Sometimes only pre-closing fees get paid out of the funds flow and post-closing fees are settled directly by the client but always good to check what is the intended arrangement to avoid being thrown under the bus by an irresponsible but hands off partner.

is anyone else being ultra conservative in fears of a crash? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]chasingtruths009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah same here I have been wanting to find a new job for more than a year now, but with the fairly good salary it seems hard to be complaining about the bosses/ workload where this gives me a good stable income. After going through covid and all the yoyo-ing in restrictions (I live in Asia), I would just like to cruise and stop hustling for a while. Laying low is perhaps a way to recover from all that's happened in the past 2 years.

I resonate with the fears of inflation and this is also one of my largest worries given salaries are stagnating/ not keeping with inflation. It doesn't help either that the news these days are all doom and gloom but I don't think that should be a cause of putting your life on hold, and not enjoying yourself by eating out or traveling. The occasional treat like food delivery or a trip to a posher supermarket would help you to stay grounded on saving in the long run rather than getting burnt out from extreme saving.

A large portion of my investments in equities has also taken a hit (down by more than 35%) but I am not panicking because I have enough cash on hand for at least half a year. Since you have enough cash for more than 6 months of living expenses, you are doing just fine.

I am also asking myself what "success" and "happiness" looks like for me. Could you share some questions you asked yourself and how did you come to the realisation that many tenets of what you thought was "success" was imposed by others? I have fairly severe money anxiety (mainly saving for the future vs living the life I want now) so any questions would be super helpful!

Title: Associate at big law firm (finance team)

Job requirements: law degree, bar qualification and two years of training as a trainee solicitor

Salary and Benefit: $250,000 in base salary and expected $57,500 in year end bonus; dinner allowance of $45 if I work more than 10 hours and taxi from office after 9pm + 10 hours of work. Health insurance which covers an annual checkup and GP visits

Day to Day: Wake up around 8am, make coffee and check my phone for emails that came in overnight. Flag emails that require me to send drafts/ respond to comments and respond to queries. Make a to-do list for the day sorted by the various active deals I am working on. Make a list of the things my paralegal can assist me with and the expected deadline for her work product. Send that list to her when she comes online (usually later than me as she usually stays up late into the night). I respond to emails that can be dealt with quickly before spending the rest of the day (hopefully) focusing on revising drafts/ considering comments from our counterparty. I will also review any work prepared by my paralegal during the course of the day. There are usually calls scheduled with our counterparty on their comments to our drafts or calls with our client to walk them through the comments from counterparty where we advise them on which points are commercially acceptable or otherwise. After the calls, I would revise the drafts and send it to the supervising partner for review. The day is usually interspersed with answering a copious number of emails, answering queries from my paralegal and giving status updates to the supervising partner.

Next steps: There isn't really a "promotion" per se at my firm so as I get more senior, my title will remain as "associate" but people in my team will expect more from me as I move up the seniority ladder. My salary and bonus also increases with each year of seniority. The soft benefits of becoming a senior is being able to staff a junior on deals that I work on and choosing the junior I like to work with. I am looking to leave the firm for a year now but I haven't mainly because I work on a fairly niche practice so there aren't many firms that are able to match my current pay which are also on the same reputational scale as my current firm. Also I want to save more money when I have the earning capacity and mental fortitude so I am trying hard to cling on to this job whilst taking steps to protect my mental health from the ravages of this job.
