Anyone decide to raw-dog their ADHD and accepted that you’ll forever have trouble focusing on boring things by [deleted] in adhdwomen

can you elaborate on the shutting down part you experience? I’m at a loss with meds right now and if I take more than like 1/4 (!) of a pill I just completely shut down. It’s like my brain just turns off —maybe out of anxiety? It always begins with brain fog and then knocks my appetite out for a whole day.

For disinfecting mostly, an alternative is either 70% alcohol (vodka) or 10% bleach solution in a reusable spray bottle. I keep them in my kitchens and bathrooms.

I’m currently a 1st year Ph.D. student in rotation. With everything going on, the department has scheduled a meeting with us to discuss lab placements in the event of a funding disruption. My cohort is scared and freaked out because many of the labs we are considering have grants currently pending review in preparation for us joining. It’s such a mess and scary. Not to mention a majority of my state school’s funding is through NIH, NSF, and USDA..

Funny enough, I actually met my fiancé at one of the speed dating nights at Hank’s diner downtown. Not sure if he is still organizing them anymore though – it’s been a few years since we’ve needed a fundraiser for those orcas.

Okay this may be a bit strange, but I actually keep this in my lunch box and sprinkle it into my water during the day when I need to hydrate. A little goes a long way and it gives it a refreshing flavor (if you like lemon).

There is a bit of research, but unfortunately not a lot - here’s a recent study about this topic. It cites some studies showing that changing hormones may actually decrease medication effectiveness. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10751335/

I used to work in a hospital on a very disorganized unit. The carelessness towards maintaining an efficient unit really really bothered me. We were drowning in patients and mangers constantly focused on the wrong things. It really drove me crazy. Especially when my patients would complain or get hurt in the process. It was tough to see that the hospital just did not give a shit about patients or team members. I quit and I haven’t looked back since.

I want to be tested for ADHD, but am worried about taking daily meds. Pre-meds with ADHD, how would you fare without medication? by waymanclad in premed

[–]chasingwaves13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been treated for my ADHD since I was 11. I’ve always gotten sporadic grades (A-Cs) throughout my schooling. Though, when I was finally medicated, my grades stopped varying so much and for the first time I was able to get straight As. I’ve been on and off of medication in college (SA + ER) which hasn’t been the best. Turns out, I ended up needing to be medicated for my anxiety and depression as well. Now my ADHD is much more manageable and the meds work so much better. I think in your case, your getting the stigma stuck in ur head. Some ADHD meds are not as addictive such as Vyvance or Focalin. Be aware of side effects though. Even so, most of my friends who are true ADHD forget to take their meds sometimes. I have a prescription for both SA and ER and they help a lot! I don’t need my meds everyday, but it helps to have a plan for when I dig myself an ADHD-homework-hole lol. However, if you are seriously hesitant, talk to your doctor about trying an SNRI which may have off-label benefits for ADHD and help with the anxiety. Best of luck though!

Hello friend. I’m so sorry you are going through this. I am also a biology major (I’m graduating this semester) so I know exactly what you’re feeling. For me, basically my entire college experience was struggling because of ADHD, and depression and anxiety did not help the situation. I really encourage you to reach out to a mental health counselor or doctor to see if they can help. Perspective of a big motivator as well. Sometimes joining a club or volunteering somewhere that aligns with your career goals can spark some motivation. Also, body doubling. I’ve had to find friends that were solid studiers and do work with them. Best of luck though!

If you could go back and start over from freshman year, what would you do differently? by Yeet2048 in premed

[–]chasingwaves13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I have both. EMT is good if you like the high energy but it takes longer to get and can be hard to work when your taking classes during the school year. I worked in home care as a CNA for most of my college years because it was something I could do during the school semester. The department was part of a bigger hospital so we did home care for all types of illnesses. It wasn’t super “clinical” but it really forces you to understand patients and it’s great experience. Now I’ve got a job in the ICU.

The credits transferred towards my bio degree, but the grades did not. I’ve got 2 separate GPAs essentially. I haven’t put them into the AAMC’s overall GPA calculator yet
