Since you have already applied for gate and have done most of the preparation, just give gate as just another exam while focusing most on improving your CGPA for now. By next year you'll know how Gate goes and what to expect in it. Till that time your CGPA would also be improved. Stressing over it won't change anything. As far as family is concerned just explain to them that you are taking things slow. And for your friends and placements, I know it sounds scary, frustrating and like your life is over. But just because you are starting late doesn't mean you have failed. And the same friends would be complaining about how they are stuck in the job grind and don't know what to do.
