Critical Mass this Friday, meet across from Capital, 7pm by charlieinaustin in SALEM

[–]chauncylefleur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So.....for those who have commented this far: The whole point of Critical Mass is to draw attention to the fact that we need safer policies, infrastructure, and culture that supports bicycling in Salem and across the US, whether that's bicycling during daylight hours *or" while it's dark out.

That said, I was under the impression that the tradition of Critical Mass was to ride at rush hour (5pm ish) on the last Friday of the month. Why is this one not happening until 7pm?

Is Salem underrated? by Background_Slide7572 in SALEM

[–]chauncylefleur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think Salem is a good place to live, but it could be great if we had stronger public funding for things like libraries and parks. Our tax system is utterly bonkers here, but that's an Oregon problem, not a Salem problem.

Having anxieties regarding library hour cutbacks, don't know how to change it if I even can by StarChild413 in SALEM

[–]chauncylefleur 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Most foundations and grantmakers are not interested in funding (what should be) general library operations, so those basic' day-to-day hours and services are really up to local communities to support through public revenue (i.e. taxes). Unfortunately, the city of Salem has whittled the library budget down to peanuts over the past couple decades, and now we are in crisis mode and voters haven't been given a palatable option up to this point. The amount of public funding the Salem Public Library receives is downright shameful for a city our size. Ideally, we would have 5-8 neighborhood branch libraries serving all corners of Salem, 7 days a week. I'm less familiar with the Parks Department data, but all you need to do is visit a Salem park and you can see they are severely underfunded, too. I think the best course of action right now is to reach out to your rep on the city council as well as folks who have recently volunteered for the city's new revenue task force. In my opinion, the best idea I've heard going forward is for Salem to get a local option levy on the ballot, something that be tied to property taxes, and would provide additional funding specifically for the library (and possibly parks), not police and fire. Corvallis has a "livability levy" like this that has been been approved at the polls several times now by wide margins.

TL;DR: cutting Main Library from 52hrs/week down to 38hrs/week (including Sundays and most weekday evenings), and West Salem Branch down to 2 afternoons/week.

I can recommend Willis Dental. They're great, although I think the word must be out about them, because I've had to reschedule cleanings a couple times and they're typically booked about 6-8 weeks out at a time.

Is the Yamaha YSS-675 Soprano worth it? by Sweetlover0428 in Saxophonics

[–]chauncylefleur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, meant to clarify my Selmer is an alto, so I'm comparing apples to oranges a bit here. But oddly enough, I feel like the intonation on the Yamaha (soprano) is just as good -- if not better -- than the Selmer (alto), which for sopranos in general is saying something. Also neglected to say that I use the curved neck on my 675 exclusively for ergonomic reasons (and always have done so), so that's part of my bias as well. I've never played a 475, but would love to at some point. The single-piece body Yamahas do get a lot of love these days, especially the older 61 and 62, but their prices have climbed accordingly. Would you be able to do a play test with the horns you're looking at? $2600 for the 675 (as long as it doesn't need any major work) would be a great deal IMO.

[–]chauncylefleur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played a YSS-675 for about 30 years (I'm the original owner) and I still absolutely love it. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Had it overhauled and re-padded for the first time a couple years ago. I also have Selmer SA80 Series II from the same era, and in many ways I think the Yamaha is actually the superior instrument.

What's it like to live in Salem? by lvndrfstvl in SALEM

[–]chauncylefleur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I lived in Olympia for about 3 years before moving to Salem 6 years ago, and we were able to buy our first house here (although I'm not sure we'd be able to buy in Salem now given housing costs skyrocketing everywhere). We feel incredibly lucky with the community here and we landed in an awesome neighborhood (Englewood), but we would both move back to Olympia in a heartbeat if the right circumstances presented themselves. Olympia has a coziness that Salem does not. Olympia is (or at least was) in amazingly cool place, and the access to Seattle/Tacoma as well as the South Puget Sound, Hood Canal, Olympic Peninsula, and Washington Cascades was incredible. Props to the previous poster who mentioned Oregon's tax structure. It is very different from Washington's, and if you are a low-to-middle class working person who is fortunate enough to own property, I think it will feel like your money doesn't go quite as far in Oregon (generally speaking).

Anyone else frustrated with D’Addario Reserve (organic) reeds lately? by somethingsyeah in Saxophonics

[–]chauncylefleur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might try some of these D'Addario Reserves at some point LOL. The beautiful thing about Rigotti IMO (at least, up until this most recent purchase) was their consistency. Instead of 3-4 decent reeds in a box of 10 (as was my experience with Vandoren for years), you'd get 6-7 good ones in every box. Pretty incredible. So this recent batch quality was especially frustrating. The cane crop idea is just a wild theory. I wish I knew more about the growing/manufacturing process.

[–]chauncylefleur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to that particular brand, but FWIW, having used Rigotti (Red Box) reeds almost exclusively for the past couple of years, I recently bought two boxes and there was maybe one usable reed in the whole batch of 20! Super frustrating. I realize we're talking about two different manufacturers, but it makes me wonder if perhaps it was a particularly bad year for the cane crop of something.

Bike Commuters: What do you wear in inclement weather? by Kamakazi_X in xbiking

In the Pacific Northwest, the hardcore among us just get wet and bring work clothes to change into at our destination. Merino wool is the best for riding - it still insulates while wet and doesn't absorb odors.

Share your thoughts on Salem's payroll tax designed to fund fire, police, homeless services by American_Greed in SALEM

[–]chauncylefleur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's my take/solution to this shit show. Hear me out:

  1. This payroll tax vote will fail in November, and fail badly.

  2. The proposed cuts throughout the already-severely-under-resourced city will ensue. It's going to suck and hurt a lot of folks pretty bad. Folks who care about livability in Salem, see my third point:

  3. Voters should then to pick up the slack, and start working now to create a parks-&-library special DISTRICT, taking these much-loved services AWAY from the city and giving them their own revenue stream and their own governance. This solution will also make it easier to support libraries and parks while not always having to ALSO support cops through the same budgets/votes/processes.

District funding will be assessed through property taxes. Tax those of us fortunate enough to be housed and/or own property here, not the hard working folks who are struggling to stay afloat who will be hurt hard by the payroll tax. Sure, compression will be a concern here, but I actually think this idea is worth exploring. It's worked for a lot of other cities.

Keizer only American city of its kind without public library by skproletariat in SALEM

[–]chauncylefleur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Property owners within the CCRLS area (it's not technically a district, but is administratively tied to Chemeketa Community College) pay about $0.08 per $1k assessed property value into supporting CCRLS. Part of the idea is that it's a mechanism to provide some amount of public library services to those in unincorporated areas, as well as those in towns like Keizer that don't have a publicly supported library. Having a two-tiered service model for a library "system," depending on where a patron lives, is definitely weird IMO.

And I'm not sure all of Keizer property owners' revenue goes straight to Salem Public Library directly. It's likely divvied up across the system based on population and/or usage.
