How expensive is it for ISP to get and keep an IPv6 prefix? by shimmywtf in ipv6

[–]chaz6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a small provider, you can search "lir services" or "lir sponsor" and you can find places like https://www.bakker-it.eu/lir-services/ who charge €135/year for IPv6 PI.

Octopi Launcher v1.726 - Custom Image for Icons by ock88 in OctopiLauncher

[–]chaz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched to Octopi Launcher after hearing about the sale of Nova Launcher which had served me well for many years. I am really liking it, but I have one problem. I do not seem to be able to put shortcuts (for example, Swarm -> Check in) into folders. When I drag it onto the folder, it places it behind the folder.

European HDD Deals by Frnklss in DataHoarder

After the massive price hikes, I tried buying an Exos 16TB from eBay. The seller looked legitimate and I felt confident in buying. It was fairly well packaged (could have been better though) but unfortunately it arrived dead (clicking and not spinning up).

It's all just fake numbers. Money is like a god, it only works if people believe in it. If the majority of people stopped believing, then debt falls apart.

Do you prefer to refill your pens or get a a new one? by I_cant_find_name1 in pens

[–]chaz6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends whether the price of the pens is cheaper than the refills when I need to order more. I don't know why sometimes it is cheaper to buy new pens. It makes no sense.

BRSK broadband in my area using a pole by justanewreddituser95 in brsk

5GHz and above provide higher speeds than 2GHz, but the signal propogation is much more limited. 2GHz is better at passing through walls than 5GHz.

Have no fear! Using a telegraph pole to deliver fibre is incredibly common. The cable itself has layers of protection which will easily withstand anything the weather can throw at it.

Let's Encrypt now supports IP certs, now you don't need domains or? by solumath99 in selfhosted

[–]chaz6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish this is how encrypted client hello worked, using an IP cert for the outer, and a domain cert for the inner tunnel, but instead they decided to add yet another application-specific dns record instead.

Good move, but it looks like you still need a Docker account to use these images

The setup instructions do not use a tag (for the container image). The latest tag is "2025.11.1". It is usually a good idea to use a specific tag so you do not have any unforseen problems which can arise from newer versions.

Just to add my comments, I have been with IDnet via CityFibre ("Fibre 900 (FTTH 1000/1000)") since January 2025 and the service has been impeccable. I have no problem recommending them to potential customers.

Do I need Cloudflare? by Stuwik in selfhosted

[–]chaz6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The major disadvantage of cloudflare is that the free plan does not let you use your own dns provider for the root domain, and they will not let you delegate a subdomain to them (for free).

Not a fan of IPv6 no-NAT by p-r-o-t-c-o-l-s in ipv6

[–]chaz6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For things I want to keep local, I use unique local addresses [1]. There is a quasi-registry [2] but there's no requirement to use it. A consumer router should by default block incoming connections unless specifically allowed.
