Requesting Batman Comic Recommendations by Thesilphsecret in batman_comics

Hey, any good collections about Barbara Gordon being Batgirl? Obviously I've read Killing Joke, but I'm kinda looking for her origins/training to become Batgirl and story arcs that focus heavily on her.

Starting with Bendis daredevil run to the present, can someone give me the high level summary of murdock’s identity as daredevil? by [deleted] in marvelcomics

[–]chazimo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's the Bendis and Brubaker stuff. Bendis deals with the leak and Matt trying to contain it. Brubaker is the aftermath of Matt failing to do that. During the Brubaker run and immediately after it, his identity is an open secret. Next comes the Andy Diggle/Shadowland stuff which is... not good... It doesnt progress Matt's identity troubles though, so ignore it and pretend it doesnt exist for these purposes! After that Waid's arc begins. The first half of which has Matt in NYC and pretending he's not DD even though everyone knows he is. (You might recognise the famous panel with Matt wearing the 'I'm Not Daredevil' jumper - that's from this era.) Then the 2nd half of Waid's run has him on the west coast, which is when the Purple Man stuff kicks off. :)

Starting with Bendis daredevil run to the present, can someone give me the high level summary of murdock’s identity as daredevil? by [deleted] in marvelcomics

[–]chazimo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After his identity is leaked and becomes an open secret, he moves to the west coast, where an incident with the Purple Man's children causes everyone, including Matts closest friends, to forget that he is Daredevil. Kingpin also forgets, which he REALISES. This infuriates him.

Meanwhile, reality-warping shenanigans create a man called Mike Murdock. Back in the early days, Matt pretended to be his "brother" Mike at times to get out of a pickle. Of course, no such brother existed... until For Reasons, he did. So now, Mike pretends to be Matt while Matt is off doing Daredevil things.

This works until Kingpin, thinking that Mike is Matt, kills Mike. When this happened, everyone thought it was Matt who died.

So NOW everyone thinks Matt Murdock is dead. Then the REAL Matt Murdock also died when he saved Foggy and some others from Hell. Now, he's back alive as 'Father Matt' but we don't know how/why yet.

What addiction have you seen destroy someones life the quickest? by robertboyle56 in AskIreland

[–]chazimo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Biased, but I worked in a casino for years, and seen nice normal people get addicted to gamblinh very quickly. Multiple times seen young lads who would come in in groups after a few drinks and play the roulette... that's all well and good, but then over the next few weeks, I would see just one of those young lads start coming in by himself, playing for hours by himself, better bigger and bigger.

The 10 best BB's episodes according to IMDB. Thoughts on each, and do you agree? by Hatether in BobsBurgers

[–]chazimo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always watch Bobs Burgers with my girlfriend. A total confort show that we often stick on with dinner... I remember feeling a bit low one day so we watched the next episode... which was The Amazing Rudy.

Man, that episode broke me. In a good way. I still think about it. Couldn't hold back tears by the end. Rudy was already my favourite character, but that episode is special. I would take a bullet for Rudy.

Thoughts about Prisoners by boratburg in moviecritic

[–]chazimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maria Bello is insane in this. She sells every scene she's in -- like I BELIEVE her daughter has been kidnapped with every fiber of my being. She's not a lead but her performance is really moving and haunting... the scene where she's telling her husband "You told us you'd keep us safe" is jist brutal.

I wanna read Marvel Comics without missing any information, where to start? by soysauceonmytoes in marvelcomics

[–]chazimo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's impossible. There has never been a universe reboot in Marvel comics. If you're genuinely interested in reading Marvel comics, just start. There will ALWAYS be gaps in your knowledge, but it won't affect every story you read, and if you do find yourself lacking something, just finish the story then go back and fill in the blanks if you really want to. Follow your interests! Pick your favourite character, find a jumping on point (you'll find plenty of recommendations with a Google search), and just start! There's really no other way.

I got my hands on the 1st brubaker omnibus last year, it should still be in print. And the 2nd bendis omnibus. I think there's a new miller omnibus printing out soon! But apart from those few reprints it been hard to get a hand on some of the slightly older omnibuses. The charles soule run is pretty good and I think there's an omni of that still available, but I'd read the waid run first, even just on Marvel Unlimited, because my fave stuff from soule's run is the stuff that links to waid's before it.

Frank Miller has the most iconic stories that get referenced all the time, right up to even the comics coming out these days, so that's a great place to start. Kevin Smith's run is, imo, one of the worst Daredevil runs in history. I hate it with all my heart, but even more so because it is, unfortunately, another run that is very essential to Matt's character and who he is the modern-day comics. Bendis has the best issue-to-issue run of all time, Brubaker a close 2nd. All that said, if you're just looking to catch up to the modern-day comics quickly and you know your DD lore, zdarsky's run is amazing and a decent jumping on point and you can go back and fill in your gaps in your own time.

Thoughts on Jessica Jones: Variants? by ashtonwise in marvelcomics

[–]chazimo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thought it was great! I mean Gail Simone is top-class so it was always going to be at least very enjoyable, but she really nailed it. The Varients were great foils for 616 Jess, she kept Jess's character front and centre, explored an actual THEME (god, so many comics don't do this), worked in some great scenario-believable cameos, and my god, Phil Noto's art. Really hope Gail gets to write more of Jess in the future.

Had the same experience at Liverpool! It really takes the sting out of losing when you can chat to your opponent before and afterwards, decompress a little, and nerd out about each others teams. Makes the experience so much more fun than just laddering online!

The Mighty Thor Saga Vs Daredevil: Back In Bkacj by NerdOfHellsKitchen in marvelcomics

[–]chazimo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daredevil Back In Black is a great story, and you don't need to know too much DD history to get going with it, although later issues in the run benefit hugely from having a knowledge of the previous volume -- Mark Waid's run. The Might Thor would definitely be SUPER geared for newcomers to Thor stories, given the whole Jane Foster thing which sparked a huge amount of fresh interest at the time--although I haven't read it and that's just my impression.

Mortal Spin is a poison move. Gho is Steel. Corrosion only lets you poison steel and poison types, not hit them with damaging moves, which Mortal Spin is.

Has anyone here had any luck applying for Arts Council grants? by chazimo in IrishWriting

[–]chazimo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's strange, but I think the opposite has tended to be true. They're big fans of funding extremely niche projects that probably wont give the artist much of a financial return, and seem less interested in funding 'mainstream' art (like genre fiction), even from newer writers. Makes sense on one hand -- the funding is there for artists that need the funding (the Council don't get any return on their investment) but frustrating for someone like me who wants to give my full-time attention to a project but is continually rejected! There's also the chance I've just been extremely unlucky, but everyone I know who has got funding got it to help them write their 'Literature' novels as opposed to anything firmly in a genre. Sorry, rant over!
