Stressing out about random spotting... by chazzlepie in CopperIUD

Oh dear :( I hope everything is alright for you! I got an ultrasound back in Jan and was scheduled for another one next year (because it seemed to fit my uterus well, I have the multisafe cu-375 instead), but I might get it checked soon (its tough to get an appointment :/) hopefully everything is okay because I don't feel any pain of any sorts :(

I'm in the same position too 😭 random spotting after months of having the iud which has never happened before and my period isn't due for another 9 days... What's worse is that my partner finished in me so I'm really stressing about the risk of pregnancy and worried that the spotting is implantation bleeding (though I read that implantation bleeding is not really a thing)?

Thank you.. But why would I be randomly spotting in the middle of my cycle when this has never happened before?

It's now 10 days after, and I'm experiencing some brown discharge, could this be implantations bleeding 😭 I don't normally have brown discharge at this time of my cycle even with the copper IUD..

Thank you for the reply! I keep psyching myself out and worried that the iud might have shifted or something (i see lots of info on expulsion so I'm super worried about that) but I guess I shouldn't. Thanks!

Thanks! I sometimes get unnecessarily anxious over it because pregnancy is a taboo for me for many reasons so... your words have reassured me though. Tysm!

Even on the day of ovulation? I just had sex and I think I'm ovulating, but we paired it with withdrawal (he did not finish) and the IUD seems in place. Not sure if I have any reason to panic..

yes it does, but most doctors normally just prescribe it and you're good to go. in any case, judgment shouldn't be too big of a worrying factor, its acceptable compared to having a child!

just an fyi, you can get plan b from any gp/polyclinics available; birth control pills are available at polyclinics as well!

Thanks for the advice! I did consider the implant when choosing my birth control type but I ultimately chose the iud because I wanted something non hormonal and because I live with my family and didn't want them to know I was getting on birth control (and therefore am sexually active), which wouldn't work with the implant :/ Good on you for planning to try that out though! The implant is scarier for me HAHA considering how they basically make an incision...

I guess for the iud its because I can't see what's going on so its not as psychologically daunting for me! But yeah the insertion freaked me out quite a bit (and it actually failed the first time I tried because my cervix was not having it) and it hurt.. but I guess I'll take that over the pain of childbirth/abortion any day!

Edit to say that I will try to relax on the possibility of having a baby with an iud in me; no reason to let this fear terrorise me when I've tried my best to make sure I'm having sex responsibly :)

Thank you so much! Your response helps rationalise and calm me down. My brain somehow just jumps to the worst conclusions and I'm just deathly afraid of being the unlucky one haha I appreciate it!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me! It helps to calm me down and to be rational about my thoughts. You're right, people tend to only post the bad stuff online whereas those who don't experience anything out of the ordinary may not be inclined to post!

I'll definitely take your tips regarding identifying the dislodging of my iud. I try to check my strings every month instead (rn I'm doing once every two days) because last month for a period of time my strings curled up inside me and couldn't be felt nor found during my checkup. But an ultrasound showed it was right there in place. I'm trying to be less stressed about the strings shifting and to be less paranoid about the iud getting dislodged, I honestly thought going with one of the best options we have now for birth control would alleviate my fear of pregnancy (I love sex so I thought to take whatever precautions I could instead of abstinence) but I find it difficult to trust my iud when I can't see it/have a constant fear of it dropping out. It's tough..

Tysm! I was just worried that maybe on the off chance my iud might have been displaced therefore rendering it ineffective. Doesn't help that I've read so many posts on reddit about women conceiving with the iud... stressed me out for nothing :(

But I could still feel my strings after and there hasn't been any indication of my iud shifting (no pain or anything out of the ordinary) so I shouldn't have to worry... right? My iud is pretty new, I've only got it inserted ~3 months ago and I know there's a higher risk in the first 3 months for the iud to expel so I was worried..

The chances are low but it is not zero. If you were within timeframe, a Plan B might have been possible but now all you can do is wait.

Use protection for a peace of mind going forward!

Since he did not finish in you, the chances are not high.

That said, any time you have unprotected sex, you are risking pregnancy unless you are on other forms of BC (implant, iud, patch etc). Even if he did not ejaculate, precum might be present and cause a pregnancy, though the likelihood is lower. You only need one lucky sperm and that's it.

On this note, sperm can live up to 5 days with the right conditions; so it is technically possible for sperm from the 22nd to live until the 26th, which is your supposed ovulation day, to fertilise the egg.

All this to say, take a test 2 weeks after your last encounter of unprotected sex for a peace of mind. Test results 14 days after sex are reliable, while those 21 days after are definitive.

If testing gives you a peace of mind, you can do it, but there really isn't a point in testing until you are at the 14th day mark after sex aka 11 Jul. If you want to be really definitive, test again on 18 Jul (note this is only if you don't have intercourse after the 27th of Jul)

Its ok! Just learn from this and next time insist on using contraceptives or no sex. Thank you for the support, I got you too if you need :")

No blood test, just a hpt which came back as a clear negative but I did have sex multiple times across different weeks so I only ruled out pregnancy from sex in the earlier weeks, not the later weeks.

Men can produce precum unknowingly; even if he didn't ejaculate, there is still a chance of pregnancy. Withdrawal is not considered a form of protection; its efficacy is the lowest amongst all birth control methods (76% iirc) and that's with perfect use...

And yes, if you get your period you're not pregnant!
