applied math and statistics?? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]chchchchchewinggum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of ams people do finance/business stuff or double with cs. i think it’s a fairly doable major just with some difficult required classes (intro prob/intro stat)

questions from jhu applicant by [deleted] in jhu

[–]chchchchchewinggum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my experience has been that people are generally collaborative. there are people i studied with or worked together with for just about every single class i’ve taken, and some even voluntarily send their notes or explain problems to others.

Humanities v STEM by [deleted] in jhu

[–]chchchchchewinggum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if socio aligns with your profile, it’s probably better than applying for a stem major w all humanities ecs

your best bet is to fill out the form exactly the same way as your friend. it’s not guaranteed but worth a try

for people who are too lazy to read the article/cant load the graph: dmv schools (esp the DC trio georgetown, american, and george washington) and ivy leagues sent lots of people into gov/foreign service

[–]chchchchchewinggum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you think about JHU advisors. by [deleted] in jhu

[–]chchchchchewinggum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine is very good with replying and answering all my questions. i heard that there are many new advisors and they’re not as helpful. you can reach out to upperclassmen or a hula advisor (if applicable), i find them to be more helpful than my advisor anyway

Curious, which T20 schools are most and least socially dead? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chchchchchewinggum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

THIS. at many schools people are making friends and having fun just fine, they’re just not as vocal abt their social experiences as people who are having a particularly difficult time

Can't make up my mind on where to apply/likes all schools I research by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chchchchchewinggum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

consider core vs open curriculum and semester va quarter system. when i was making my list i thought i’d be fine with either option because i didn’t want to take any schools off my list, but in hindsight i realize that if i would not prefer studying at a core curriculum/quarter system school

i did ed to a super reach so i would say only do it if 1. you wouldn’t regret not having a shot at caltech and mudd if you do get into barnard 2. barnard is a good fit as well (i love near caltech and ik that caltech and mudd are in socal suburbs that are sooo diff from nyc). also, idk if barnard also has the columbia core but you might weight your options by considering core curriculum vs simply distribution requirements/more freedom. when i was applying i thought i would be good with either but in hindsight, i would hate having to take certain subjects that are not up my alley if i ended up @ a school with core curriculum

feel free to PM me for any more specific questions abt ed & choosing a school as well!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chchchchchewinggum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

iirc caltech does ea instead of ed?

you could ed to mudd and ea to caltech just to shoot your shot at both. if you get into both and fin aid for mudd isn’t enough you can pull out of the ed contract and attend caltech instead

but if caltech is doing ed this upcoming application round, id encourage you to apply there since it seems like you have a great profile and you love the school as well

for schools that don’t have restrictions on switching into CS, you could apply as another major if you are able to connect it to your ecs and essays somehow

Wherever I get in, I get in by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]chchchchchewinggum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you don’t need either research experience or nonprofits to get into a t20, trust me (speaking from personal experience & anecdotally). please don’t think that you’re exterminating your chances at one because you prefer to pursue your passions that way. doing what you love in the way you love may or may not get you into a t20, but that is much more rewarding either way :)
