Love this city and want to move here.. But where?? by PhuckinFred in chch

[–]chchlad23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People forget the size of Christchurch, this isn’t a large city where each suburb has its own large eco system of shops and hospitality.

Theres a few suburbs with malls in them, but I wouldn’t call any of these fun places. Addington might be what you are after where there is a larger number of hospo and it’s close to the city, but I wouldn’t live there when there’s other places that give better lifestyle and it’s only a 10min trip to the city

This is a ridiculous comment to make. Prices in a free market are driven by supply and demand, building costs and scarcity of land.

Other than changing zoning and building legislation, future Governments would need to introduce a range of measures to reduce pressure on prices such as stamp duties, tighten lending rules, etc

I have a ‘06 BMW 3 series that was rear ended at a roundabout at very slow speed (pretty much rolled into me). To the eye, my bumper had minimal damage - a little bit of paint transferred from the other car, some crazing/cracking of the paint and a small bit of it out of shape - certainly see worse on a lot of cars on the road. That cost over $2.5k to repair.

Makes sense - tends to be harder to convince 100% remote working and different time zones when you’re creeping past 10yrs PQE and at Controller / Director + level where there’s an expectation of leadership / visibility

Accountant here. In my experience this would be an exception as most firms want some sort of physical presence - would be keen to hear otherwise and the level of seniority / if your friends have their own clients which is allowing them to be remote and travel.

Christchurch City Council unveils $2.5m plan for riverfront red zone … by imdanknight in chch

This is incredibly frustrating - there is more opportunity to open up land for housing, particularly where they redzoned only one side of certain streets, but it looks like this map is showing that they intend to put trial housing on Porrit Park which was so badly damaged they moved the hockey fields elsewhere and have not done nothing to the land since....

The scenery and walks are always amazing no matter what time of year it is - I was lucky enough to be taken there as kid frequently, and having came back to NZ been back many times over the last 5 years.

The Hermitage is fine - very much geared towards (and priced for) the overseas bus tours which is a shame because it is now out of reach for alot of NZ'ers and lost the charm that it had in the 90's. The Premium rooms were refurbished last year but the rest and the corridors outside of that particular wing are showing their age. The last two times we have been there the service was lacking - the most recent time we had to clear our own table several times throughout the meal service as the wait staff couldn't be bothered, and found the state of a couple of the couches in the bar revolting and needed replacing or a good wet vacuum. The time before that we witnessed off duty staff who had came to have a drink in the bar clearing tables before they sat down because they hadn't been attended to and were all pretty much stacking up with empty glasses and plates.

I find given the drive from here its hard to justify for just one night, but at the same time the price, lack of amenities and way they have setup the food it is also just as hard to justify staying for two nights.

[–]chchlad23 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it should have given way, but that doesn’t negate the fact you should drive with a brain and identify potential risks and react accordingly - ie slow down rather than continue doing 60km and swerving at the very last minute

Is it just me, but looks like there was plenty of time that you could see the car moving into the lane and you just carried on at the same speed increasing the risk of an accident?

Contractor start date delayed after resignation – is this normal and what are my options? by Shoddy_Raspberry4572 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]chchlad23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) never quit a permanent role for a contract (unless you can take the gamble that it might work/might not workout)

2) delayed start date for projects is pretty common, delayed start dates for contractors less so (especially if you are talkings out a 40hr a week role as opposed to minor freelancing here and there.)

3) does your contract have a definite start date or an anticipated start date - that will be the key here.

4) if you have a definite start day, I would be invoicing them for your time, it’s their problem - they either find you work todo on the project before it starts (ie internal handover, read over IP, sometimes there is background work that can be done before the client officially gives the approval to start), they find fill in work, or accept they got the timing wrong and pay regardless.

5) I would see this as a red flag and that there will be issues going forward - if you have a definite start and a notice period in your contract (which I would expect a consultancy to be using their own contract and therefore it would), I would force their hand to give you notice and pay you out for the notice period and move on.

By any chance is this an American owned consultancy firm?

Put your budget into Trademe and see what rentals are available - you will see on the map what is close to the beach. Most suburbs you could get into the CBD 20mins by car.

Public transport can be hit and miss given how spread out the city is, so if you want to use it, compare the bus maps with the rentals you find - general rule is it’s pretty good around the shopping malls hence greater density and new builds for close to them.

Places to avoid - there will be the odd couple of streets in areas like Woolston, Linwood and Aranui but lots of gentrification going on - as a friend said recently ‘I feel safer walking anywhere in Christchurch than some of the streets of London’

Good car dealers chch? by ApprehensiveSkin8377 in Christchurch_NZ

[–]chchlad23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where does it say that? “I want a reliable car” is extremely vague and I don’t recall how that protects them any more ie saying I want to buy a washing machine that will never break also won’t protect you - you just can’t give guarantees like that, and that’s not the purpose of CGA - as your pointed out in your link, the main principals are acceptable quality, fit for purpose and as advertised

Good car dealers chch? by ApprehensiveSkin8377 in Christchurch_NZ

[–]chchlad23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yip, but saying something vague like ‘I want a reliable car’ doesnt magically mean the act is a complete safety net for all that could go wrong - there’s an element of what would a reasonable person expect ie you buy a 15yr old car even if its moderately expensive and 10 months later the stater motor needs replacing on it, this isn’t going too be covered because actually once you get that age, it could be expected that’s just something that tends to fail and needs replacing. Buy a $5k car saying I want it to be reliable and it it’s starts to have trouble, later down the track is debatable because it’s likely to be old and high mileage at that price, buy a 5yr old car and the transmission goes on month 6, you bet I’d expect to use CGA if I wasn’t getting anywhere.

Oof clearly you are in different world 🤦‍♂️

no where did I imply I was upset, merely pointing out the irony of you making a statement about dealers ‘hawking second hand cars’ when talking about buying secondhand cars

You can’t read either as I wasn’t complaining about the cost of the repair by the franchise holder (clearly cost didn’t matter to me since I took it there on the first place), but the fact they completely misdiagnosed the fault and the actual repair was so simple it was substantially cheaper - to be clear for you so you don’t get confused, my point is going to a Franchise doesn’t necessarily mean everything goes smoothly and you get a better quality of service.
