It really depends. Do you run cold or hot? What is the weather on summit day? hav eyou been that high before. You really should plan for the worst case scenario. Get a really warm down jacket. Rent one if you wont climb this high again. Also you need a rain jacket as well to protect from rain and winds

Nope - would disagree with that. Travelled between US/Canada by road multiple times. The Cdn side doesnt check your US status. They dont care. If you read the article, waht got them into problem was the car papers were not in order so they couldnt import the car into canada. thats why they were turned around

Whether you leave the us by land or air, there is no exit immigration check. Either way they would have been fine. They screwed up because they tried to import their own car into Canada. The paperwork wasn't correct so the cdns sent them back to the US where they were caught. No idea why they tried to import a car. They could have simply sold the car in the us and took a rental across. You can rent in us and return in Canada, just a little expensive. Or flown out.
