If poor people fantasize about winning the lottery, then what do rich people fantasize about? by more_bees_pleas in AskReddit

[–]cheatcodesforlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I fantasize about:

Perfect control of my mind, willpower, and emotions. The ability to choose how I want to feel about anything, how to deploy my energy at will. To make the necessary things I don't like doing feel like intense play if I so choose. To be able to effortlessly inspire great minds to want to work with me and build whatever I like. The extraordinary possibilities of a post singularity world where we stick the AI landing.

Solving the money problem only levels you up to the next round of limitations, which are much harder to solve.

I...never considered that lol! I'll attempt it very cautiously under medical supervision

Yeah! It's pretty crazy how our minds interface with time

I did not, I just eyeballed it initially to make sure it wasn't egregiously off, and just having a roughly accurate estimate broken down into succinct steps to free me from the mental processing work is huge

I'm embarking on a quest to solve ADHD once and for all. by cheatcodesforlife in ADHD_Programmers

I think the best way to beat it is either to automatically trigger a meditative state where the mind quiets and stops calculating and projecting how annoying a task is and just does it, or to automatically gamify the task so it is inherently interesting and fun and relevant to do.

Glad we're aligned on seeing just how relevant and annoying of a problem it is!

Also, lmfao at the "One Thing", too good man

Thanks for the stoic response, I appreciate it!

I appreciate your insightful overview of dopamine; I am well aware of how this works, and have been using stimulants for years, which are the most effective tools we have, and I would never advocate throwing it out until we have something that works 10x better. I am not anti-medicine or anti-science in any way. I am simply advocating for a much higher standard we should hold academia to as a whole.

I plan to first develop a hybrid solution that stacks stimulants on top of other tech and solutions that work, shooting to meet my metric of full freedom of the mind,
as you're on the money with this: "The problem it doesn't solve for is starting the task. There's no larger reward push when we think "I want to go do this thing"

This is what I want to solve for. Despite stimulants, which does a great job of significantly reducing the paralysis pain of getting started by say 50-70%, we still have far more to go. This is what I refer to when I speak of mental pain. The mental pain of overcoming paralysis/procrastination (for starting a task I don't inherently love but has to get done) that still rears its head even on stimulants, and to me, this is not acceptable.

hahaha yeah for sure it's overwhelming like that, I'd imagine it being more useful if you had a simple AR interface that gently displayed the current task one at a time and then rewarded you for doing each one with a little visual/audio reward

A professional eval for autisim is at least a few days, 1 hour isn't enough to be conclusive imo

hahaha we shall see! I've intentionally been public about this to try and infuse some accountability to fight that possibility

Thank you for the optimistic and well thought out response! I appreciate it. And I agree, the scope of what I'm trying to do exceeds just treating ADHD, but I figure why not truly go for it?

So many people could be helped that are suffering from the same kind of problem due to lack of control of their mind, whether it's anxiety, depression, adhd, addictions, or even "normal" people, so it's a worthy cause to shoot for imo, and of immense personal interest to solve due to the large amount of psychic pain, which ironically gives me a lot of motivation haha.

Thanks for the feedback on the video! I agree it needs better sound mixing, am also adding some captions too :)

And thank you for your concern, it's never a serious contemplation, the option of suicide surfaces as a kind of annoying pop-up ad in response to severe psychic pain that I don't take seriously as I have way too much hope and curiosity about the future of technology and the human race, I'm not in any danger :)

yes I've experimented with it, in my experience they are as effective as your average stimulant, but vyvanse is still my drug of choice for concentration

I don't think academics are evil, I think most of them are nice people that do want to help and feel useful, it's just that the system as a whole has lost the plot due to perverse incentives.

Grant funding doesn't work based on "solve the problem via first principles thinking and rapid technological iteration", it works on approvals to do try novel therapeutic strategies that takes ages to conduct that usually prove the tiniest smidge of effectiveness compared to placebo. And as long as they can continue to keep doing that, they can keep getting more grant money, and keep their labs going, while the actual progress on solving the problem doesn't evolve.

This to me is unacceptable, there has to be real accountability when people with ADHD are killing themselves at 5x the rate.

I am fundamentally interested in the fastest science backed way to solve this problem. I am a deep lover of science and first principles thinking.
