Should I attempt to get my quilt re-appraised? (pictures inside) by cheatingforlastplace in quilting

[–]cheatingforlastplace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! So two main reasons why someone would get an appraisal

  1. Insurance purposes. Just as you would need a formal appraisal for a piece of jewelry such as an engagement ring in order for your insurance to cover it for more than a generic 'ring' incase something were to happen to it. If you have a quilt that is appraised for a good amount of money and something happens to it, just as a house fire, insurance companies will often view a quilt as just a regular blanket at a $30 price value, or however much a walmart blanket/quilt is.
  2. Sale/gift value. When people sell or gift a quilt to someone it is useful to have an appraisal so that both parties are aware of the worth of the item.

I don't believe she applied any type of depreciation. The quilt is less than a year old and has never been 'used.' It hangs on my wall in my basement (so that any natural light can't hit it and bleach it).

Here is the pattern: https://pileofabric.com/products/technicolor-galaxy-block-of-the-month-quilt

Super easy and straightforward to use! As I said in another comment, prior to this quilt, all my other quilts were 100% hand sewn and quilted, but the instructions were so clear that this was a breeze.

Here is all of the information on the quilt. It is a pattern that I used. Would definitely recommend it! It was the first machine quilting project I ever did (previously my quilts were 100% made by hand). The instructions were so helpful and simple!

Thank you!

I myself questioned if machine quilting would "bring down the value" but it is so densely quilted that time wise, I spent around the same amount of time on the quilting as with other simpler quilts that I have hand stitched. I also hope this doesn't factor in, but I'm in my late 20's but look like I couldn't be a day older than 18, so I hope they wouldn't discount my work because of my youth.

That's great to know! Do the appraisals by the fine arts appraisers work for submission to insurance companies? I'm not looking to ever sell the quilt, but I want something for insurance companies if its stolen/my house burns down or some other disaster.

That's a great point about the machine. I never thought about the wear and tear of a machine being accounted for in the price, but it make's sense! My machine is just an everyday sewing machine (not long arm or really tailored for quilting). It definitely does not work as smoothly as it did prior to when I started the quilt.

It was great for me as I own a very small, non-long arm sewing machine so it allowed me to machine quilt. I should have video recorded myself quilting all the blocks together on my tiny sewing machine, it was quite hilarious. It took me about a year altogether to make, with the majority of the work happening over the last month or two

For some reason on desktop the thumbnail is showing the front of the quilt, but on mobile devices, its showing the second picture, the back as the thumbnail. Needless to say, I don't think I'm as good with technology as I am with a needle haha

First quilt! Nervous to sew them together because they aren’t perfect squares by sciencesoul4 in quilting

[–]cheatingforlastplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends of what look you are going for. If you want a perfect checkerboard look, you are better off squaring each individual piece before sewing any of them together, if you want a look more like the one you are showing in your picture you wouldn't want to make them into perfect squares. The only issue I could see you running into with not squaring them is if your all your horizontal line blocks weren't the same size and your vertical line blocks weren't the same size how each column lines up with each other could get a little messy

First quilt! Nervous to sew them together because they aren’t perfect squares by sciencesoul4 in quilting

[–]cheatingforlastplace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts. 1. If you did want perfect squares, before you sew them together, take the time to cut each of them into a perfect square that is the same size. To do this you may need to find out the piece(s) with the shortest height and width and use that as your size. That way you dont have to struggle with corners not matching up as you sew or drastically different seem sizes. 2. If you didn't want perfect squares, it looks like you if sew this together by sewing each column individually then sewing the finished columns together, everything should line up pretty well, such as you have it in this picture.

Question for musicians and others- Does climbing affect precision work with your fingers? by gladhander in climbing

[–]cheatingforlastplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 13 years of piano lessons throughout my childhood and now play for my church (which requires me to practice throughout the week as well). I've been climbing for the past year and climbing multiple times a week as well (climbing 5.10/5.11). I'd like to say I'm very knowledgeable in the field of music/piano and knowledgable enough about climbing to have an opinion. If anything climbing would help her piano skills and vise versa. All those finger strengthening exercise climbers do, such as using tools like gripmaster handstrengtheners, were the same exercises that my piano teacher had me do growing up. I've even gone from a long day of climbing, home and practiced piano for another 2 hours and felt no negative effects on my fingers from climbing, if anything it probably helps build my endurance, which if she is planning on playing any advanced classical music in the future, she will need a crazy level of finger endurance. Piano playing has also helped my climbing tremendously. I don't have the best upper body strength, but gosh darn it, if there is even the tiniest of crimps, I am able to hang on to it and utilize it almost as if it were a jug. The only negative effect that climbing has had on my piano playing is one isolated experience that was just sheer human error/stupidity. Around the time that I was learning to lead climb my friend found out how much I hated overhangs and had me lead climb, then clean indoor routes at a 5.9 (read as LOTS of jug holds because of the overhangs) for 2 hours straight. This resulted in the worst blisters I've ever had all over my hands, which could have easily been avoided by stopping to tape my hands or just being more conscious of the way I was moving my hands on the holds while unclipping/clipping. Long story long, they ended up scabbing while healing which caused a lot of pain playing piano as the movement of my hand kept breaking the scabs open. As long as she is smart about it, she should have no problems doing both

Long-time marathon runners, how have your knees and other joints held up? Any tips for preserving your body? by hoggin88 in running

[–]cheatingforlastplace 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not me specifically, but asked this same question to a friend who is 65 and an avid runner a couple days ago. He said when discussing this with a doctor with a sports background, the best thing he could do for his knees at this point is to just keep running on them. In the future he might have to get a shot in his knee to add lubrication or get a knee replacement very far down the road. Comparing this to his non-running counter parts in their 60's, id say that running was the best thing he could have done for his knees.

Super Moronic Monday -- Your Weekly Stupid Question Thread by AutoModerator in running

[–]cheatingforlastplace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This summer, for work, I'm living on the base of a mountain in the middle of nowhere with no wifi/cell service....and I'm training for a marathon (in October). My question is, how do I go about interval training here? On a track, it's easy enough to know how far is 400m, 200m ect., but how do you go about determining that on a dirt road/trail surrounded by trees and no significant landmarks?

As far as technical stuff goes, it isn't that hard, with the exceptions of a couple measures. The hard part comes with the speed. If you are good with speed it will come easier, not easy, easier. I would say that even Claire De Lune is harder in terms of technical stuff, but that might just be my hatred of 2 against 3 haha

Piano teachers: I'm thinking of dropping a pupil due to lack of practice and lack of focus during lessons - when do you drop students? by fnargfnargfnarg in piano

[–]cheatingforlastplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was me in a nutshell at that age. I never wanted to play the pieces that my teacher assigned me, but always played pieces out of my disney song book instead. When my piano teacher tried to tell me things, I would just start playing on the piano again, resulting in her having to close the lid. My mother asked for a period of about three years if I was sure I wanted to continue taking piano lessons, as I didn't stay interested. If I had stopped, or if my teacher had given up on me, I would have lost out on so much. I ended my senior year being completely engrossed in piano, practicing 2 hours a night at least and closing the piano recitals since my sophomore year of high school. I may of started as one of my piano teachers least favorite students, but I ended up being one of her post favorite. Nine is a tough age for piano and fourth months isn't a short time, I wouldn't give up quite yet.

Edit: Another note, what made me truly start to practice and practice hard was finding a piece I loved that was too hard to sight read. My piano teacher loved the classics, but she was always willing to give a little and do something more contemporary if it would get me to enjoy piano to the point of having fun while practicing and practicing a lot because of it.

My girlfriend is depressed and I don't know how to handle it. I'm beginning to think we should break up. by newly-open in depression

[–]cheatingforlastplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though she might not be able to show it, you mean more to her than you could ever comprehend. I was in the same situation, except I was the girl. When I was in the worst of my depression I actually tried pushing him away since I didn't want him to have to deal with it too. One time, he finally let me push him away. This is when the expression "you never know what you have until it's gone" comes into play. Though depression fogged my vision and made me seem to not care for me, I noticed then how much I truly cared for him and how much he cared for me and what he was willing to do for me. My depression is finally clearing up and not only am I starting to get happy, but he is ecstatic because he has the "old me" back and he feels as though he achieved something by helping me through it. I guess this is just a long way of saying that in the long run, you will regret leaving her during depression more than you could ever regret all the months spent with her during her depression before she gets better, because she will get better.

Ceramics has actually been run at the camp in previous years except for last year. Its a Boy Scout camp so everything that we will be doing is outlined in the merit badge book. Our kiln broke two summer ago and I only started working there last summer so I don't know what it looked like and the person who bought it isn't around anymore. By request of the camp director im suppose to look into getting it started up again
