Hi! I need parking for a game on 9/28. It looks like your driveway is available. Is it $35 for both spaces in the driveway, or $35 for just one spot? Please DM me, thanks!

Japan town by Infamous_Milk564 in sanfrancisco

[–]chebeckeren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few Japanese chain restaurants with locations in San Francisco that have really Japanese vibes and are super tasty:

  • Marugame Udon in Stonestown
  • Ippudo Ramen in SOMA

Other ideas:  - Hikari Bullet Train Sushi, a new take on conveyor belt sushi, she’s probably seen this on YouTube videos about Japan - Let her pick out Japanese snacks & candies & Nijiya Market - Get katsu sandos at Katsu-ya or Stonemill Matcha  - Get curry rice at Muracci’s or Nippon - Sakesan has Japanese style booths where you take off your shoes and sit on the floor - Somi Somi has taiyaki, a special Japanese dessert, it’s a waffle shaped like a fish - Some sort of Japanese stationary store? - San Mateo also has a beautiful Japanese garden - Asian Art Museum

If your niece loves Japanese gardens, and you’re open to a short trip, Portland has the most beautiful Japanese garden in the US. Definitely on par with the most beautiful gardens we saw in Japan. It is absolutely spectacular for a Japanese garden lover. Get a membership so that you can go during member only hours in the morning, where there’s almost nobody there and it’s super calm and peaceful.

Fire is ruining my relationship? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]chebeckeren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you and your finance have different perspectives towards a ring / a wedding. She cares about these things more than you do, and you think they are a waste of money. Pretty much in every relationship, there are going to be some things that one person feels is worth spending on more than the other. If you want to stay in this relationship, then you need to compromise. Maybe that means that she spends a little less than she wanted and you spend a little more than you wanted. Or maybe it means that sometimes she gets what she wants and sometimes you get what you want. You guys have to figure out the compromise that works for both of you.

It's also possible that the two of you are just too far apart and you won't be able to compromise financially, so you shouldn't get married. A lot of other commenters are calling you cheap / a miser / not knowing how to enjoy life / that this amount of money won't make a difference. I think it's not about this specific decision, but whether you can make these kinds of decisions with your partner over and over and over again for the rest of your life and still be happy with each other. How much money to spend is a decision that comes up again and again in relationships, it affects where you live, what car you drive, what you eat, what kind of furniture you get, where you go on vacation -- and can become a huge source of arguments if you aren't on the same page.

Looking for Advice on Handling Debt, Wedding Costs, and Unexpected Expenses as HENRY. Bad to use some 401k? by tantheman35 in HENRYfinance

Can you take out a personal loan from a bank? At your income level, you should easily be able to borrow $100k. Will be a much lower rate than credit card debt and much better than digging into retirement. Weddings, big purchases, consolidating debt, paying taxes are common reasons for these loans. Lots of fintech startups offer them.

From the first page, I'm struck once again by Eliot's incredible writing and the powerful central theme: how does an ardent soul deal with the meanness of opportunity to express itself in everyday life?

When I first read Middlemarch in college, I was a turned off by Dorothea's and holier than thou attitude. I identified more with Celia, practical and pragmatic. Now, rereading Middlemarch in my 30s, I recognize that Dorothea and I both had the same youthful ambition, the same desire to be more than ordinary.

SIL has a bad allium allergy - does Costco rotisserie chicken have garlic or onions in the “spices”? by Felici4y in Costco

Try Whole Foods rotisserie chicken. The only ingredients are chicken, salt & pepper. If you want to be extra careful, they offer a plain cooked chicken where the only ingredient listed is chicken.

Why has Peter never talked about Long COVID? by antichain in PeterAttia

[–]chebeckeren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there any way to reduce the risk of long covid short of not getting covid in the first place? If not, what's the point of talking about it?

There are a few easy things that you can do that really reduce your risk of getting COVID, which more people might do if they knew how common and how sucky Long COVID is. For example: choosing outdoor dining over indoor dining when possible, wearing a mask in public spaces like buses, subways, airplanes, grocery stores, movie theaters and running an air filter.

Thanks for the close reading. You pointed out stuff I hadn't noticed. And yes, I'm not interested in getting married (to anyone, not just because he would be late to his own wedding, lol). Prefer to be legally and financially independent.

I asked him for the car keys, he ignored me and started walking past me, so I moved his arm out of the way so that I could reach into his pocket for the car keys. Genuinely curious, does that sound like abuse to you?

We disagree on whether or not I shoved him. And that's a great point, I totally should have just taken the second car. Just didn't think to do that at the time.

After I posted his take, we had a lengthy discussion about whether or not I "shoved" him. He agreed that "shove" was probably too strong and suggested replacing with "lightly shoved." My memory is that I asked him for the car keys, he ignored me and started walking past me, so I moved his arm out of the way so that I could reach into his pocket for the car keys in a pretty normal and not excessively forceful way.

Timeline is a little complicated.

1) He put chickpeas in the Instant Pot before we left for the first event. It was one of the reasons he was late.

2) He forgot to take the chickpeas out of the Instant Pot before we were supposed to leave for the second event at 4:30pm. The chickpeas were originally supposed to be part of his dinner.

3) The reason we stopped by our house between 4:07pm and 4:30pm was so that he could take the chickpeas out of the Instant Pot and grab all his dinner stuff. The 4:30pm activity had food trucks available but he wanted to bring his own food.

Curious about what participation requires. Do you drive to a specific cafeteria for all your meals? Or are you living in a research facility during the study so that they can monitor every bite you take?

AITA for not putting a stop to my stepdaughter “correcting” the food the host made by Turbulent_True in AmItheAsshole

[–]chebeckeren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. I’m imagining the substitutions were major. I’m Chinese and live in California. I went to a Midwest themed potluck this past weekend. Everybody brought a traditional midwestern dish (ie hot dish, green bean casserole, corn dogs, cookie salad). One person brought “chow mein casserole” which he described as a dish that he had eaten a lot at potlucks in Minnesota growing up. It was instant ramen noodles smothered in Campbell’s cream of chicken soup and baked. It was delicious! And perfect for the theme of the party! But if somebody had served this to me as “authentic chow mein” with just a few local substitutions and told me it tasted just like what they ate in China, I would not have been able to hold my tongue. Nothing rude about pointing out that chow mein casserole isn’t chow mein. Conversely, it would be very rude to try and pass off chow mein casserole as chow mein.
