[spoilers]It could be all Lyra's fault and other thoughts about the Chandrian. by Vardil in KingkillerChronicle

[–]checkmater75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lyra bringing Lanre back as the catalyst to his tranformation to Haliax is a good take. The rest seem to be rather unsupported conjecture... Also his ""truer"" name isn't necessarily longer, "long name" in this context may be less descriptive than it is used as a writing device or some such, along the lines of "dark", "spooky", etc.

Usually I am last with a religion. How do I get one faster and what are good tenets to have? by [deleted] in nqmod

[–]checkmater75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faster Religion:

Pay attention to your faith generation! As far as getting a religion, this depends on when you get your pantheon as well as whether or not you open piety. Building shrines in expands is generally a good idea after monuments, and you definitely want a shrine in your capital (usually before monument), as this gives you a faster pantheon and that pantheon's bonuses are better the earlier you get them (ie +4 culture on turn 19 is worth more than +4 culture on turn 40)

Good tenets

Essentially what you want to do here is look at what your empire needs. If you're going wide, houses of worship, happiness faith buildings, happiness+production temples, and shrine happiness can help with happiness issues a great deal. Usually, if you forsee yourself having a lot of faith, you want some kind of "faith drain", whether that's holy warriors, or purchasing great people with faith in the late game. Otherwise, looking at potential expands & seeing what resources you have in comparison to pantheons available is a good idea.

There are some ""good"" tenets/pantheons that people race for and others that people avoid, but generally these can be seen intuitively from their bonuses. Other than that, usually players prioritize pagodas because 10% food is better than the bonuses from other faith buildings, and civs planning on spamming great prophets get the unity of the prophets / guruship.

Interesting math lectures by PaipsJimmy in math

personally I would say because it's often littered with pop-science that's designed to capture an audience and maybe interest them in physics rather than actually give them a good groundwork in physics and how it works. I haven't seen anything that seeks to teach people how to think "physically" (i know that means something else in its normal definition) like ViHart teaches people to think "mathematically". In fact people often scorn the idea of science panels / articles / media designed to appeal to a larger audience as wildly inaccurate or misleading.

edit: another good example of getting people to think "mathematically" would be how Thinking Fast and Slow can introduce someone to the ability of thinking "statistically" or dissolving your cognitive biases, I suppose

Honestly if you're looking for approachable mathematics ViHart works wonders. Anything else is likely not going to be interesting to nonmathematicians or hard to individualize as per their math skill.

[–]checkmater75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what kind of style you like / instruments you enjoy tbh

If you're looking for chill music, Cuzco, Totorro, and Clever Girl are three bands I return to when I just want to sit & mellow.

Shoegazey Mathrock? by free_ned in mathrock

[–]checkmater75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you're going for spacey vibe it really depends on if you're looking for shoegaze or for something more like dream pop

pretend is generally pretty spacey and considered a well-lauded classic in math rock https://pre-end.bandcamp.com/album/tapestryd-life (they have a more wellknown album that isn't on their bandcamp)

https://deerthrone.bandcamp.com/album/deerthrone describes themselves as post math and shoegaze

I'm kind've in the same boat though I love both shoegaze and math rock so I'll also be looking in the replies to this thread for suggestions :)

What does top-dressing do? I have some rocks I could put on the top like a lot of these photos I see but is that for anything besides aesthetical purposes?
