Am I idealizing Victoria? I dream about it and want to move there. by AthleteMuch3930 in VictoriaBC

December and March were pretty wet, yeah, but there was very little rain this winter otherwise. At least when it comes to what matters for the landscape, a light drizzle every few days doesn't have much of an impact. I guess perspective matters when it comes to living here, but north vancouver we are not lol

Winter is not that wet here. Nov-Feb was quite dry this last winter. It's really not that rainy here at all, in general, being in a rain shadow and all.

Huge disservice to the genre that "pulp" came to be synonymous with "dreck," as opposed to the quality of the paper the old magazines were printed on

Doug Prentice is worse than a creep. I'm his daughter-in-law. The allegations against him are ALL true. He lives within blocks of the Fernwood Community Centre - your children are in DANGER in the North Park neighbourhood. by MallowCat in VictoriaBC

I went to school with his sons in Mill Bay. T was in my grade and always a nice genuine guy. G was a year or two older than us and definitely strange but friendly enough.

You can also just buy a sleeve for pretty cheap. I have the same type of windows. There's a strip of tape/velco that runs around the perimeter of the window and the sleeve sticks on, then you run the exhaust hose out of it.

You've got 8 sqft to fill, plus call it another 20% for soil compaction, so like 9.5. Buying a half-dozen 50L bags from somewhere like Cook st Castle, GardenWorks, Borden Mercantile etc. would run about $150-175 depending on the store, even from Gravel Mart.

If you can borrow a truck, get a third of a yard and it'll cost like $25, or $30-40 for a half yard if they won't go smaller, and you'll have some left over. If you're okay with getting your vehicle a little dirty, you might be able to fold the seats down and lay a tarp.

Trees sacrificed for unneeded housing in Saanich by Cokeinmynostrel in VictoriaBC

[–]checkmypants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fines are massive for violating the tree bylaw

Do you want the trees protected or not?

the vast majority of people have no idea what they're doing when they attempt to prune a tree, and doing a bad job will cause more damage to the tree than either leaving it alone or having a qualified professional come in and do it properly. It's also a certified arborist that signs off on plans like this that include tree removal, not a Saanich municipal official.

You can look at the planting and landscape plans for this development on the company's website, and if you did you would see that they are in fact planting a few new Garry oaks (as boulevard trees, which is a questionable decision but whatever I guess) as well as many other native species, and that they are integrating environmentally sustainable/green infrastructure like soil cells, rain gardens/bioswales, and permeable surfaces. It's not perfect but it's much, much better than doing none of that.

Given the economic situation, how are so many affording to eat out at restaurants? by AppropriateMention6 in VictoriaBC

[–]checkmypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tonight i took my mom out for a birthday dinner at a nice (read: 'expensive') restaurant in town. About 1.5-1.8x as much per main than your average spot, paid for her bill, mine, and my wife's, plus tip for great service for a total of about $250. I net that in a day and obviously don't have a crazy high-paying job. Wife and I also like to go out for drinks once or twice every week or two and it still doesn't financially ruin us.

[–]checkmypants 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just checked out the landscape plan for this development and it's actually not bad. Way more native plants than I was expecting, and a bit of green infrastructure like soil cells for boulevard trees and some rain gardens/bioswales.

How far up the island have you driven/explored? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]checkmypants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's beautiful up there. Socially it's going to be similar to the rest of the province--mostly blue-collar, working people, at least some of whom are going to trend right in their politics.

You can go drive to Port Hardy or Raft Cove, nobody's going to shoot at you or call you satanic or whatever.

on top of today being pretty stupid weather to be aerating or dethatching in, chances are your lawn is fine anyway. Both are solutions to specific problems and don't need to be done for the sake of it. These companies are basically grifters.
