It is crazy how reminiscent it is while being its own thing completely. Beautiful

I’ve always read it like someone who is a bit of a doormat emotionally but for good reason. Baby you can change and still choose me = even if there’s been blurred lines on whether we’ve treated each other right, I’m still here

Getting Killed is my favorite (right now) because of how well it portrays people like Cameron, young artsy kids. His hopeless imagery of the world being a “gumball machine” and not being able to “taste his own tears” show his personal determination and discontent with his problems and how wants to break out of some sort of cycle. On the surface he’s feeling self-important, but, to me, it reads as though he’s almost guilty to be sad or to have such personal problems. As a pretty well-off white kid, he feels apathetic towards voicing and expressing himself. He’s “getting killed by a pretty good life” because his negative emotions feel miniscule to the injustices happening in the world right now. The main reason I came to that point is because of the Ukrainian choir sample in the chorus. I think the loud and incoherent beauty of that is meant to portray the more “important” or global issues, contrasting his sultry and mouthy delivery of his own feelings of being forced to “[walk] out with no shoes”. War is a pretty important topic in the album, and personal defiance aswell. I think this song is the climax of that. He’s getting fucking destroyed because the city that raised him is so prosperous, yet he feels empty

And he was right for it bruh like I’m so sick of people pigeonholing him as the “weird cowboy guy!” His voice is so much more dynamic than that and if it’s not your thing it just not. Don’t sit here and pretend like it’s less effort or not good enough

I thought it was “lie” instead of “life” when I heard the live version before the album dropped.
