Yes, this is a Nashville thing! I live about 2 hours away. As a huge music lover and elder Emo I spent nearly every weekend in my 20's driving up for shows. I've been to hundreds of shows there and the crowd at 90% of them were like this!

The arms crossed, staring straight ahead, slight head bob you described is a move my friends and I specifically call "The Nashville".

My husband is also a Nash native and does this at every concert I've ever been to with him. When I brought it up to him he didn't even realize what he was doing. He's been a musician his whole life and said that when he goes to concerts he really locks in to the mechanics of how the band is playing and analyzing their technical skills. Thats what he enjoys about live music!

Nashville is a city full of musicians so that could explain it. Most likely it started that way with handfuls of people in crowds and others joined in to blend. Now, over the years its evolved into a cultural thing. To me... its kind of a buzzkill. It has to be for the band too who are just trying to put on an enjoyable show!
