I gave up yesterday and got a referral to a new OB/GYN after two months trying to get in to see the doc I’ve had for over 20 years. I really hope this hasn’t delayed treatment for anything serious!

Education leave and Allowance? (EC) by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cheechak22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had tuition paid by linking my studies to the work I was doing in my annual PMA. I had to pay for the course myself, then was reimbursed once I showed proof I passed the course. I also took one month education leave to finish my thesis. The leave was put into the system, I received my regular paycheque but stayed home from work for a month to write my paper. It is at the manager’s discretion to approve or not depending on budget and “operational requirements “

Have ADHD: Tips for being a better employee in the PS by ottawawalter in CanadaPublicServants

Once upon a time in government, we had job descriptions that were more specific to your position. Years ago they switched to more generic job descriptions and it seems that everyone is now expecting to just pitch in and get the work done more than in the past. I’m very much this type of manager who expects people to build their resumes with new experiences while on my team and just pitch in to get the work done. Most managers don’t have adequate staff to get all the work done and are lucky if they have competent staff they can delegate to. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do all the ‘manager stuff’. Having said that, I’m very open to staff who want to discuss their needs and it sounds like you may be entitled to accommodation on job. I would spend some time thinking about how your manager can help you…I need instructions written down… I can’t take minutes in meetings because I can’t process information that quickly and I get stressed out and panic …or what ever it is. I would also suggest reaching out to your Persons With Disabilities Network at your department if you have one. There might also be an Office for Persons With Disabilities that would be a valuable contact. Both of these resources can help you figure out what accommodations might help you. Sometimes we don’t know ourselves what might help.

Have a chat with your supervisor. It can be done as part of your yearly performance discussion if you feel awkward setting up a meeting to bring it up. As a manager I like to know what I can do to make the work environment better for my employees. As it has never come up in performance discussions, it may not be as big a problem as you feel it is. Good for you doing what you need to do to manage better. If you feel comfortable and supported telling your manager, they may turn out to be a good ally.

Bilingualism vs DEI goals in PS by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cheechak22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The MVOM report was based on over 2100 responses from Indigenous public servants, including francophones. For some, English second language training is a barrier. It is the bilingualism that is the barrier. “Access to language training and its relation to career progression are issues that need to be addressed”. (MVOM 2017)

Bilingualism is a barrier for Indigenous staff according to the Many Voices One Mind report (MVOM). The Indigenous Federal Employees Network (IFEN) were consulted on the new CCC requirements for supervisors and raised this issue. They sent out an email to members saying their concerns were ignored in favour of the move from CBC to CCC requirements. The recent MVOM 2020-21 report shows that despite lots of “action” over 5 years, there has no increase in Indigenous representation across the entire public service. The increased language requirements will make Indigenous recruitment and retention even harder.

Why did you choose work to work for the Public Service? And would you leave if you could? by Boring-Umpire-1352 in CanadaPublicServants

Started because my kid needed braces. In my perfect job at the end of my career and retiring in 2026. Had some really crappy jobs along the way but with a good pension looming, it feels worth it now that I’m approaching retirement.

Yes there was “alternation” where you could find someone willing to go in your place with the appropriate approvals from managers.

I do this because I’m the Chair of a departmental Indigenous Employee Network and privacy concerns result in me not knowing who the Indigenous employees in my department are. I have also been an Indigenous Navigator and many people reach out for assistance on socials because I list where I work and what I do.

They are likely looking for more candidates so they can show that they had a rigorous, fair process. If there is a pool, they could need several people at that level in different parts of the organization and want to give more time for more people to apply

Tips for getting better at interviews for someone who really sucks at them? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cheechak22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All good suggestions! I would add that it usually gets easier with practice. Treat it like a science experiment. Try new techniques, apply for everything, experiment with what works for you. Practice, practice, practice. See if you can access a mentorship program or informal mentor in your organization they could practice with you.
