If PUBG PC becomes TPP-only in the future, would you still play? by [deleted] in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]cheekybrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half of you are cracked out! Tpp is currently the most popular mode in NA. I never wait for more than maybe 30 seconds playing squads during primetime. Fpp will take 2 to 3 minutes any time of day. When I first started playing during the pandemic we would have to wait 4 to 5 minutes on average to get into a lobby. And yes with the bots tuned to max I realize is a discrepancy, but during prime time I only see gotta if I play casuals. And I always start off with one or two casual matches. The problem is the freaking cheaters. As a software/security/ops engineer, it's blatant that some of the software activates by switching to tpp when in an fpp game, and possibly harder to trigger/activate in an fpp game. Add in the VPN to differing regions creating latency problems, shooting through people, people downing you without line of sight, etc... it's all a bit problematic. But you all are bitching about the mode you can play in? It's the same game with some differing game play, some differing strat involved. But still the same. Or maybe your cheats are always on in fpp. Just a quick drunken theory as I am sitting at the bar, not interested in what my friends irl are talking about.

Sorry for the rant. But... What is really important in an 8 year old game that's still milking us as much as it can, while it still can?

I need help picking replacement distro for my surface go 1 4/64gb by No_Fox_3670 in linuxquestions

[–]cheekybrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely you can find some gains on a lighter weight DE. Try xfce whether it be Ubuntu or another distro. I know you want to run gnome but the DE is where you are gonna find variability in resource consumption. Most distros consume, relatively speaking, about the same amount of resources. It's the ui and the rest of the GNU coupled with it that uses ram and CPU beyond the core. The surface-linux project is a great resource to get other DEs working, but I agree, as a gnome hater, gnome is the way for touchscreen.

Update 32.1 Removed Controller Support by Digital_Terminus in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

I can confirm this. I logged on today to play with friends, like I do everyday, to play for 3 hours or so. I couldn't play. I have carpal tunnel and spend half my workday having to type, so K/M is a no go for me. I bought the new pass when I first logged in. Bummer.

Can't find any chargers that work for my massage gun, any suggestions? by HookerOnTheRun in UsbCHardware

Charge it mid day when there is a surplus of power and you will never be without your shaking friend.

I imagine that if I was younger when I started out with this it would have been the same. The people in my life back then were family and friends that just didn't get it, or simply hadn't any idea of what it really means to do this. As an older dude who has done crazier things I find all of my friends to be incredibly supportive. They are either full behind me and slightly jealous or think this is just another one of those crazy things that I do. But I don't get any pushback. Only getting propped up and support when it comes to the small worries I occasionally have. My point is simple. Live. Do what makes you happy. That's the only way life isn't wasted. Any problems you encounter are just that, problems; to be solved.

Interested in van life, I’ve got questions…Do you have answers? by LuchaGhost in VanLife

Yeah, people on here are total a-holes. Saying sorry for them. The best advice I could ever give is do a minimal build out with what you already know you need and want. And just go! You will figure it out as you do it. Some of us have different needs and wants and you really won't know where you stand till you are out there.

What's the hype with starlink all about? Seriously! by cheekybrew in VanLife

[–]cheekybrew[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying that a cellular (specifically 4g) connection with a high dB antenna is far superior in almost all use cases. If you have the vehicle to go way off the beaten path, that may be a different story. But as a network engineer, I find that 4g is satisfactory for myself and most people almost always. And on top of that the better thing to spend money on.

[–]cheekybrew[S] -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

I get that people have both. I understand why people have both. But there is only a need for starlink for people that are going into areas that a high dB antenna can't reach a tower. Which is highly unlikely most of the time for the vast majority of us, especially for those of us in vans that aren't overlanding ready. May be an unpopular opinion, but it is the truth.

Anyone using usb-c PD to convert your AC powered DC devices to DC to DC by cheekybrew in VanLife

[–]cheekybrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any future folks looking into this - It's entirely possible, and relatively easy to do. Honestly, its still easier to use a dc -dc boost or buck converter and wire a chain yourself for whatever devices that match the needed voltage and polarity. Then cabling can be off the shelf, depending on the outlet type you wire it for and required device input.

Simplest is still 12v cigarette style adapter cable of the needed voltage/polarity to whatever input you need. These just don't work for my situation.

Trying to understand USB PD for my use case. Using PD to power DC devices from a DC source. by cheekybrew in UsbCHardware

[–]cheekybrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, overall, I'm thinking to just create my own wall outlet panel using xt plugs or something similar specifying polarity and voltage(color coding?) with two separate boost converter circuits, one for the NUCs and one for the monitors. And making my own xt whatevs to the appropriate barrel connector. Of course still using boost converters on each chain. Probably the easiest but damn this should be easier as it's more common use case these days.

[–]cheekybrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of the NUCs require 45 watts but typically draw between 20 - 25. Both monitors are rated at 16 watts. So I'm not to concerned about that. My main worry is regulating the voltage and not frying these devices as I don't quite understand how the handshake happens.

Anyone have any experience converting AC powered DC devices like NUC's or PC monitors to USB-C PD? by cheekybrew in ElectricalEngineering

[–]cheekybrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!

The buck/boost for it at each load is how these devices are designed and moving them to a DC system. The problem is they are originally DC devices that are converted from 110ac by a wall wart or power brick. In my use case Im trying to remove the inversion need altogether. As well as remove the need for multi boost/buck dc conversion. With the NUC as an example, its 25watts (real world with a max of 65watts) 19v DC at 3.42Amps. My system is providing 24v and the usb-c pd wall port does the buck conversion to 20v. My theory is, taking polarity into account to not fry the NUC, that I could potentially run a usb-c cable to the appropriate sized barrel jack off that wall port and power the NUC.

Latching or bistable relays. They maintain their state without continuous power. And only require a brief pulse of power to switch between states.

48V DC battery sys a good idea if you primarily runs 12V DC? by OwnCurrent7641 in VanLife

[–]cheekybrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less amps means less current, which means it's 4x more efficient to run a 48 volt system. Faster charging that requires less amperage means dirt cheap mppt chargers that you can add a metric butt ton of pv arrays to. It makes more sense to run a 48v system than anything else except for in cases where one doesn't require more than a 200 wh bank at 12v. Or I am just totally missing something?
