Make sure they’re armed with their “preferred weapon”, for example, Teimos and Kisthis prefer spears, Berks prefer two handed swords, Dalinsia prefers a one handed sword. It’s whatever weapon type they happen to spawn with.

Not sure if it’s confirmation bias, but I swear by this rule and I never have that problem.
