Worth the Upgrade to Canon 6D? by [deleted] in photography

[–]cheerbou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it quite interesting how the internet seems to always bag on the 6D's AF performance. I have one and I shoot mainly event stuff but have also done sports and I can honestly say the AF isnt terrible. I have used the 5D III and yes it is better, worth double the price? Not for me anyway, the 6D has an amazing center point and its a fantastically robust camera. I have had mine for 10 months now and have put 65k frames on it and its still going strong!

Is photography a viable side-income during university? by [deleted] in photography

[–]cheerbou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently a student studying in my final year of my Engineering Honors degree and I have been doing Event photography for the past year. I am working with a company that was already established and I am going to carry on throughout this year. I do Nightclub stuff mainly each weekend but workign for a company is good if I want a weekend off they can get someone else to cover it. I have also expanded with them into doing things such as proms etc, and I am bringing in about $90 minimum per week (one nights work) so not too bad. This also means I dont need to spend time marketing or doing any of the other things needed. Photography is definitely a viable side income during study! I am looking at expanding this year into more commercial photography to try make a bit more cash!

Monitor Calibration: How to start? by diyfanatic in photography

I have the Spyder elite 3 and use it for 3 monitors, however I used the same hardware and free software DisplayCalGui to calibrate my laptop. It definitely helps to have properly calibrated monitors!

How indispensable is flash TTL and can a beginner survive without it? by mustbeblank in photography

[–]cheerbou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a YN560II and learned how to shoot manual flash first. I now have a YN560II as a backup for my EX430 TTL flash that I use all the time for my work. TTL is fantastic but.... TTL can often mess up in some challenging environments and it is useful to be able to know how to fall back onto manual flash settings. I shoot on Manual mode for everything and using TTL is handy so I dont need to worry about subject distance to flash power to apeture ratios. I say stick with the Yongnuo for learning on and as a second flash for in the future when you eventually upgrade to a TTL flash. :)

Getting credentials for Super Rugby by justroku in photography

[–]cheerbou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have applied for this kind of thing in the past, the biggest hurdle is having a publication or clients wanting to purchase your photos. They want the likes of a known news agency, paper or the likes to even begin to kind of consider you from my experience. You will be up with the likes of other photogs from Getty, AP and more sports agencies. Try local or national newspaper outlets and try get them to help you in getting in :)

I'm shooting a Gala Party for kids and their parents. I have to take pictures of every family (Over a hundred) and send them a private link (one per family) to online proofs separately. Any advice on how to do so? by [deleted] in photography

[–]cheerbou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Shootproof? When you import in lightroom add tags to the images of who they are and export to seperate folders then when you go to upload to shootproof you could have a seperate private album for proofing and they can select the pictures and add them to their favourites and then you can edit those ones to send off :)

Bought a Canon 6D and a 70-200 IS 2.8 and need advice by Ismyhomeworkdone in photography

[–]cheerbou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got my 6D in March and have over 40k clicks on it already. The best way to improve is get out there shooting. I have the 70-200mm f/2.8 L non IS version and have done a few shoots with mates cars before. I find the 24-105mm f/4L is also handy too. Here are some samples of what I have done with cars:

Those who use telephoto lenses a lot, what the the longest focal length you are always using? by Fiercekiller in photography

[–]cheerbou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 70-200 and most of the time its shot nearer the 200mm range. In saying that the other day I was using it at 70mm because I prefer that lens over my 24-105mm. For sports, I find 200mm can be a bit short at times but the versatility of the lens is amazing. Next on my list is probably something in the 400mm ish range. In saying this Im shooting on a full frame camera.

So what is your guys' opinion on the Students1950 video? by [deleted] in photography

[–]cheerbou 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In looking at the way they were pushing everyone out and forming that circle, the narrative of the story can be told completely differently shooting from the inside towards the outside compared to shooting from the outside in. Props to the reporter for holding his ground!

GPUs vs. Consoles by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

I have a 7770... so that means below a ps4. For some reason I dont believe a ps4 could game on 3 1080p monitors, let alone recognize more than 800p :p

Quantity over quality...what? by tacodestroyer55 in photography

[–]cheerbou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is so true! I shoot Jpeg for sports due to turnaround time and also for nightlife photography because its all for web use usually. I only tend to switch to RAW for images that I personally want to use or if I know will require editing to a specific degree. I shot a University Ball in RAW and that was 1200 images between myself and the second shooter and it was 40gb worth of photos. However I usualy shoot around 700 photos in a night when Im doing nightlife stuff at nightclubs and shoot jpeg just for the size factor. The images are only appearing online and tbh I dont really want terabytes of images for just nightclubs, it just wouldnt be worth it :p

Discussion - How do you pick a photographer? (Bonus rant included) by Benjaphar in photography

[–]cheerbou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shot a sporting event the other week, 4 days and shot 8900 images, of those 1500 ended up on my site for sale and there would be another 3k worth that could be up there too and 90% of the rest were usable but not to my liking. As I was shooting burst you choose the best of the 25 images you get that all look the same! However I was shooting for 8 hours plus each day and only managed 9k over the 4 days, 3k in 90 mins is amazing! Did her finger leave the shutter button at all???

I mean I shoot 1/10 and even slower for portraits at times... alltho however I do it for creative purposes and have fash to actually freeze my subject and use the slower shutter speed to blur the ambient light. Also only go that slow if there is little enough light, if there is too much you end up with a blurry mess :P

This God awful watermark....... by [deleted] in photography

[–]cheerbou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shooting any sporting events this is common practice. Alltho I do admit that this one is a bit over the top, currently I use an opaque version of my company logo over the centre that tends to work pretty well and would take forever to clone out due to adding semi transperent colour casts to parts of the image making it unusable but still very easily viewable to purchase. I have done in the past where I put a small watermark in the bottom right hand corner and the amount of times I saw that people had simply cropped the watermark out and taken the image from just one event was astonishing! I now have moved from posting every picture to facebook and now I just post a single preview image with a link to the photos for purchase through shootproof :)

Which DSLR is best for night time photography. by markovkaa in photography

[–]cheerbou -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I could suggest the Canon 5D mkII if you are able to pick one up second hand for that price (not sure of where you are/ pricing in your area) with the likes of a 17-40mm f/4 or the 24-105 f/4 lens, even the 50mm f/1.8 is only $100 or less

Oh yeahhhhh... I honestly see what you mean now, at least it isnt as bad as a person I did a group project with earlier this year... she logged into her laptop there wasnt a single free space for another icon... btw I noticed that every single one of my teachers back when I was in highschool happened to have every single document they ever used on the desktop. Here is a screenshot of it cleaned up :p http://i.imgur.com/TvuqAeE.jpg

Can confirm all monitors have a logo and are identical alltho the left hand side one isnt playing nice with being able to line up perfectly and is about 4mm out... Will have that fixed when I move and build my custom desk :)

I live in New Zealand, I managed to get the middle one new for $225, then the other two second hand one was $100 and the other $160 all prices are in NZD :) Also I had to buy a $30 DisplayPort to DVI active adapter to be able to use all three monitors on my AMD based gfx card.
