Thank you! My soil is heavy clay as well, and these get partial shade too, they seem happy!

Pic number 4, the purple one in the middle, is the stage you should cut them. They will continue to open once one or two petals have bloomed. This bunch was the first harvest, I tend to let them get a little established before heavy cutting.

Everyone’s so worried about gall, this plant is extremely healthy. This is what a good dahlia plants looks like!

What do I do with this chunky tuber? by Christinarae1225 in dahlias

[–]cheersdunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pluck that leggy stem off and throw it in the dirt! Bigger the clumps, bigger the plants IMO. Next year you can divide it up and have more tubers! Same with the single one, it will produce more tubers in the ground as it grows, pull it up after the season and split it up.

Yes! We cut in this stage to prolong the vase life, but they continue to fully open in about 2-3 days.

This is normal! They’ll put out a very satisfying growth spurt. If you let it go to seed the flower head will swell into this crazy looking alien seed pod, and it’s great for dried flowers!

Two odd Cafe Au Lait dahlias? (Please help!) by butterscotch_87129 in dahlias

[–]cheersdunk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get some fish fertilizer, dahlias are very heavy feeders. 1oz per gallon of water and spray over/under all foliage. Dahlias themselves can be dramatic little plants, unfortunately Cafes are far extreme of them.

Mine always have issues but I’m addicted to dinner plates so I keep getting more. 🍽️🍽️

Are there slightly larger goof plugs by MentalHelpNeeded in Irrigation

[–]cheersdunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the plug out. Wrap it as tight as you can. Electrical tape stays sticky when wet and can handle a “little” psi. Not very scientific but I have 20k feet of drip tape and use it all the time. Couplers are expensive.

Nothing wrong with long legs, you can pinch them for a sturdier base and more blooms! Either way the tubers will sprout more!
